what is the better 2nd hand car?
porsche 911 carrera 996 VS 2004 merc SL 500 R 230 2004
which will give more long term maintenance costs/problems?
assuming the 911 is faster
the SL 500 a more comfortable ride
opinions please!

mercs were built badly around that time took a real dip in quality
a 911 is bullet proof if maintained correctly

depends if you're Iranian or not.

I'd go with the SL. Not the best era for Mercedes so if you remember the 1980's MBs you'll be disappointed in the quality. Metal top is a big plus, assuming it doesn't leak and operates flawlessly.
The 996 has the ugly headlamps. Many owners don't bother much with maintenance, check especially the cylinder heads. 911 should hold its value better in the long term.
Keep in mind both are almost 10 yr old cars and if you couldn't afford the maintenance when the car was new, you definitely can't afford it when it's 10+yrs with 140,000+ miles.

Two completely different cars, apples to oranges. That being said, Porsches should be more reliable from customer experiences and friends. Mercedes are hit and miss especially the early 2000's. both are going to cost you a good penny for maint. but third party is the way to go.

my last race car was a 68 SS (real 138 vin SS) 396/325hp 4 speed car... i built a 496ci big block, car ran 10.2s on drag radials with a stick.... loved that car. Sold it after putting a 396 back in it for 22000 back in 06. Cant imagine what itd be worth now.

not exactly apples to oranges... it's a coupe vs. coupe...
now, the 996 is a drivers car.. I've driven and raced a bunch and love them, but would I want to drive one every day? probably not. road feel and driving experience is second to none though.
the sl is luxury.... I've never had an SL, but as far as S class, i'd stay away from 99-02.. '03 is the oldest i'd go, 04 should be ok.
it all depends on whether it's gonna be a daily driver or even a regular driven car (like 2-3 days a week)... if it's a 2nd car, assuming you're getting them both at the same price... i'd take the Porsche. maintence, while expensive per/hour at most places, isn't alllll that common, but parts can be expensive..... maintence on the benz will be more frequent, and it's gonna be little stupid things like the AirMatic suspension or the trunk closure or whatever... or the gauge cluster.
daily driver - benz
weekend car/take the wife out to dinner car - Porsche
personally, i'd stick with the RWD Porsche's though, couple less parts to worry about replacing.

I dont even answer a car question anymore, Parker crushes me every time I think I know something.
