GOP GOVERNOR: 'There Seems To Be A War On The Poor' With Republicans In Washington

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) criticized members of his party in Washington in an interview with The New York Times published Tuesday, saying there "seems to be a war on the poor."
“I’m concerned about the fact there seems to be a war on the poor,” he told the Times' Trip Gabriel. “That if you’re poor, somehow you’re shiftless and lazy.”

“You know what?” he added. “The very people who complain ought to ask their grandparents if they worked at the W.P.A.”

Kasich has openly bucked his party on the social safety net repeatedly, positing it as an issue of compassionate conservatism. He has said that "more important when you go to heaven than whether you kept government small was what did you do for the poor."

In the most recent example last week, he bypassed his own Republican legislature to expand Ohio's Medicaid program under the Affordable Care Act, bringing health coverage to nearly 300,000 Ohioans. That move was blasted on the right by the Wall Street Journal, among others, which mocked Kasich's religion-based argument and accused him of "feel[ing] like he's being guided by the Holy Spirit."

Kasich has made it clear that he opposes the Affordable Care Act as a whole, but that he feels a responsibility to improve coverage for poor people under Medicaid.

"I've articulated my opposition to Obamacare," Kasich said on "Meet the Press" last Sunday.

"But Chief Justice Roberts gave every state an opportunity to try to get federal dollars to improve Medicaid.  Now, we have many mentally ill people in this country who are being treated terribly. We have people who are drug addicted, and drug addiction is in every demographic, every race, every income level. And we also have many veterans who aren't covered.

"So Ohio gets a good deal. We get $14 billion of Ohio money back to Ohio to deal with some of the most serious problems. And, you know, I'm not going to ignore the mentally ill and I'm not going to ignore the drug addicted or veterans or very working poor people on my watch. But that doesn't mean I embrace Obamacare, because I think it's not right."

yup the fact that the majority of welface recipients are single mothers who have never been married with more than one kid, under 30 and have at most a high school diploma if they even have that is a sure sign of a responsible, good decision making, hard working individual.....

more access to contraception and abortions would probably help

sure would be nice if you would EVER provide a source for any of your claims

any idea how many veterans are on welfare?

just happend to be surfing the web and found this:

http://money.cnn.com/2013/11/01/news/economy/food-stamps-families/index.html?hpt=po_c2

Starting Friday, Joyce Lewis and her family will lose $44 from their monthly food stamp benefits.

The food stamps buy a lot of economical rice-based meals for the family -- four adults and a grandson who live with Lewis in Spring Hill, Florida.

First thing that struct me was four adults?

seems a little odd to me but ok, then reading on:

"Her adult daughters who live with her aren't in a position to work -- one is a new mom, and another is due to give birth soon."

you see straw I like most conservatives have no problem helping people who need help, that doesnt mean we want the govt telling us we must help ppl who constantly make bad decisions.

you mean like "the reps dont have any health care ideas"? except bush did and it covered more and costed less than this shit sandwich?

LMFAO this is directly related to your article.

You see the majority of these "poor" people are poor due to their shitty decision making, and it should not be anyones mandated responsibility to support someone who puts themselves in a shitty position.

the article is about a GOP governor going against his own party (and his own state Republican legislature) to implement the ACA in his state.  The article is also about how people in his party mocked his "religion-based argument" and accused him of "feel[ing] like he's being guided by the Holy Spirit."

If you want to talk about single mothers who receive welfare then start a thread about it

is this your response to Kasich's claim in the title of the thread that there seems to be a war on the poor with Republican in Washington?

you didn't mention "war" or "republicans" or even "in Washington"

you also didn't comment on anything in the actual article regarding Kasich's actions in his state regarding ACA or the reaction by his party (the section I bolded) in the article

great job as usual

This not very relevant to the story posted, is it?  The "Poor people" Kasich is talking about are the ones who are affected by his state's legislature (voting against their own economic interests by) turning down federal money to expand medicare to cover those who now make too much to be covered by medicare and not enough to get subsidies for ACA.

This is the so-called "working poor" and not non-working, young uneducated single moms that you like to shit on.  Makes me think you might have some kind of deep-seated mommy issues.  (Or not -- Maybe I've just been playing GTA 5 as Trevor a little too much...)

"Access to contraception?"   Lol.  Are you f'n kidding?   Condoms are dirt cheap and everywhere.  Free at the health department.

Implant should be mandatory after one kid and if they want goverment assistance.  As a taxpayer, I would gladly chip in on that.  Save a ton in the long run.

It's fairly obvious to anyone with a brain that getting pregnant by a dead beat and giving birth to a child you can't support isn't a smart move.

oh I agree the father is just as big a piece of shit as the mother, dont get me wrong the stupidity in that situation is not limited strictly to the mother.

However as having the child is her "choice", do you not think its her that should get the brunt of the criticism?

I mean you guys have fought so long and hard for her right to choose but when she chooses its automatically an even split?

seems a little hypocritical of you there jagson
