I worked crazy hours for so many years. I found working the grave yard it was better to work out prior to work not after. When you come home just go right to bed. Wake up prior to work and get your workout in. If you workout after you are so wired you have to stay up for hours. I don't care what anyone says it's unhealthy and unnatural to stay awake all night and sleep in the daytime. No wonder cops drop dead so young nation wide. I bet sleep deprivation is a major contributor.

Then on your days off you start gravitating toward sleeping nights making everything worse.

yeah, my old schedule (before becoming a parent) was this:

Work 8pm to 4am every night.

Sleep 4am-11am.  Gym noon to 1.

Home from 1-8: Hang out with chick, shop, relax, a little work, the usual stuff.

Then 8pm rolls around, chick goes to sleep, and I begin 8 hours of uninterrupted work time.  I loved it.  I still work close to that now.  There are a lot of distractions during the day.  At night, it's work, tv in background, maybe netflix, and just kick ass uninterrupted.

When I was working nights I remember all the studies like the above that just amounted to nonsense. I remember going to a seminars that work made us attend where a nutritionist told us when to eat carbohydrates and when to emphasize protein according to the shift you worked. Just nonsense. Man is made to sleep at night and be awake in the day time. No psychological, diet or nap tricks will fix the unhealthy practice of fighting sleep 6 in the morning from being awake all night then driving home exhausted. The only thing that helps is going to sleep for 20 minutes and it will give you a couple of hours refreshment but you could get fired for doing that on many night shift jobs.

Military, cops, nurses, and a few other occupations will know what I'm talking about. Work a year of night shift and it will effect your health.

It sounds good, but, you just don't sleep the same during the day and you end up in a constant state of irritable sleep deprivation. Did it before. Would only do it again in the absence of another option.

It doesn't take a special occupation to know of circadian rhythm.

how do you work til 4am and sleep at 4am?

I work till midnight, but I don't get to bed till 3-4am and sleep till 10-11am, and back to work by 1230/1pm.. sucks.. but at least I make my own schedule, so I if i want the night off i just take it off.... but if i'm not working, i'm not making money.. like tomorrow, i'll be done at 6 and heading to sushi with pretty blond latina crossfit girl.. so that's $100 on food... plus the $100 i won't be making since i'm not working..  :-\ oh well...

I've been working midnights for the past 14 years, it is NOT a problem if you regularly work out... you ALSO avoid rush hour traffic and all the "lunch time" bullshit!!! :D

If you work 12hr shifts its best to workout before you go to work. Eat your dinner 8 hrs into your shift that way you dont go home and pig out or have the urge to stop for fast food after you get off from work.

I was doing web design from 8pm to 3 or 4 am... that's when I fell asleep.  I ramped down, doing planning, cleaning that last hour as I wore out.

When I play a gig until 1 am, yeah, it's hard but I'm usually out 30-45 minutes from walking in the door.  I time my sleep, caffeine consumption, meals, etc so that I know i'll collapse into bed by 230 or 3.

I think it's healthy IF you are consistent, always get 7-8 hours of sleep (I get about 9 hours most nights now lol),  I think MANY people that work nights ALSO smoke, do shots at 2am, stay up watching tv til 10 am, etc.  Many late night jobs also come with bad habits.  I'm lifting at 7, chik parm at 8, gigging at 9, drinking a muscle milk at 12, and a V8 with maybe a half sandwich at 2am.  it's all about habits, healthy or not.

Do you work for yourself as a web designer? Do you make enough to support a family?

he stays at home, take care of kids, "design" a shitty website once in every three months, gets 300 bucks for it,  and wife pays the bill. What did you expect.

Wanna know what sucks worse than graveyard?  working 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift...open to change from day to day and week to week. That's the job I interviewed for today.

What you mean "open to change from day to day"? You never know which shift you will be working each day?

Meaning one day I could be being working grave, the next swing, the next grave or any of the 3 shifts.
