Title: how tightend down should a valvecover/gasket seal should be on a pathfinder?
Post by: Marty Champions on November 19, 2013, 06:04:33 AM
yes great lower back workout leaning foward looking up under the hood using forearms

its a v6 on the passenger side the screws were real lose. so i tightend them all down, not crazy hard but much better than they were nice and snug

the engine has been smoking a few weeks it looks like some oil leakage, but the engine oil level is fine where it should be

i cant really tighten the screws on the driver side id probably have to take some things apart

but anyways am i approaching this right just tightening them down, or is there some rule to just barely tighten down the valve cover screws.

Just snug tight dont overtighten them it will pinch the gasket.

1) For the Pathfinder, I noticed the valve cover is held on by some phillips head screws. In the service manual it says to torque to 9-26 inch pounds. How tight is that if I am just doing by hand with a screwdriver?

Use a 1/2in ratchet and a breaker bar and crank down until you hear a "pop", that should be good.

Prefferably you want an exact spec. But for a valve cover gasket you shoud be fine with 100 in/lbs ( that's inch lbs. not foot lbs.).

Apply red loctite to the bolts...then get a 3 foot cheater bar and aim for 807 foot lbs

Take it to a mechanic you sick bastard.

Once you do something like this one time, you realize how simple it is and how overpaid techs are in that industry...The problem is having the right tools and time to do the job...

I never worry about torque setting unless its impotant engine component like head bolts ect.
For rocker cover gasket like has been said apply a bit loctite and just nip them up.

It means you need a torque screwdriver. 9-26 inch pounds is a broad range, but I couldn't do it without a proper tool.

You need a torque wrench Alfred E. Neegul

no, that in foot pounds is 3/4 foot pounds....torque is pressure multiplied by distance...go to an auto parts store/sears and get the cheapest torque wrench they have.  Two diffrent types are below, the top one should be easier with the torque specified...9-26 inch pounds.
