The post on George Farah made me think of this...
What bodybuilders do you think looked better at a lighter weight?
I'll go first... Dennis James. When Dennis turned pro he had much better lines. He's packed on a ton of mass, but I think its at the expense of those lines. The judges keep sending out the message that bigger is better.

I would say almost 90% of all bodybuilders go beyond their ideal bodyweights , most look much better a tad smaller and they look a lot sharper.

Kevin Levrone @235LBS CIRCA 1992
-
I agree with ND. Almost everyone, including Coleman, who was at his best in '98-00 at 250-260.
-
Perfect example Nasser El Sonbaty look at him when he was light he waist & hips were outight tiny and he was probably 250lbs look at the B&W pic his midsection is a travesty when compared to a lighter version and his overall look is more pleasing .
-
Cutler definitely looked better smaller.

Question: What bodybuilders do you think looked better at a lighter weight?
Answer: All of them.

Nasser started winning and placing higher in 95 (once he got heavier) He gained maybe 10-15 pounds that year. The pic where hes lighter is from 94. I think he looks alot better at the heavier bodyweight. He looked a little flat in the torso when he was lighter.

Kevin Levrone @235LBS CIRCA 1992
Yes. That had to be the perfect physique.
-
92 Leverone
-
gH ruined him :-\
-
RICH GASPARI LOOKED HORRIBLE WHEN HE TRIED TO GO BIGGER.
-
I don't think anyone has ever had better triceps than Levrone did at the 92 NOC.
-
Hmmmm......I'd say
1 - Ronnie Coleman: To me, he looked his best around 1995-1996.
2 - Greg Kovacs: He looked his best 10 years ago, when he won the Canadian Nationals and turned pro. Since then, the hype to have him come into contest shape at a heavier bodyweight has been his downfall. Kovacs needs size about as much as Shaquille O'Neal needs elevator shoes.
3 - Art Atwood: The way he looked when he won his first pro show in 2002 was great. But, as he's blimped up, he struggled. He reminds me of what Ken Waller said about Mike Katz in Pumping Iron:
"His arms aren't big enough to match his chest; his thighs are too big for his calves. You know; he hits one pose. And from that, he looks like a big spider."
-
Flex looked awesome in 93, then he tried to compete with the mass monsters..The synthol didn't help as well..
-
Can't think of a better example than Edgar Fletcher.
Truly awesome physique, and fcuked it all up:

pics like those ^^ almost make me cry :'(

If we're going to add NPC amateurs to the list, the most obvious candidate BY FAR has to be Dave Palumbo.
Palumbo has never been the most aesthetic guy in the world. But, he used to look somewhat decent a decade ago. I believe it was around the time he won the heavyweight class at the Jr. Nationals (he was even endorsed by AST; I remember he was on the company's ads for AST's MRP; MY-T-Pro 40, I think that's the name of it).
Now, his physique looks awful. He reminds me of Bizarro. And, he may have ruined his skin condition beyond repair.
-
Great B&W shot of Edgar.
-
i agree
-
Besides Arnold,Strydon Lou and Vic Richards...
Every single bb looked better smaller even Ronnie Coleman 98'
WOOOOSSSHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!
-
you guys are trippin saying dj and levrone bologna looked better smaller
-

i disagree about nasser. i think 1996/1997 was his prime.
but for the list: cutler, DJ, levrone, ronnie, flex, ruhl, fux, the list goes on. i believe there are VERY few bodybuilders who wouldn't do best to top out in the 245-250 range. nasser and dillet being exceptions, with jay's best being around 260.

Question: What bodybuilders do you think looked better at a lighter weight?
Answer: All of them.
This is the correct answer
-
...more guys who look better and better as they get bigger and bigger
-
This guy for sure

This guy for sure
The Council has duly noted your advises. Thanks for posting.

the IFBB would complain to the guys that their guts were getting out of control, but the winners had the biggest guts.
Milos said he felt he had the perfect physique when he was 220ish (he probably did look near perfect), but he didn't place well until he was in the 240's.
the federation complains about the lack of symmetry and balance associated with excess growth, but then they reward it in competition.

Dorian,Ronnie,Kevin,Flex,Nassar,Artwood,Kamali,Chick,Tim Prince, Craig Titus, Milos and JayCutler...to name a few

Agreed. It's because once they've been there (perfection at a lighter bodyweight), showing up bigger but still relatively hard is inevitably viewed as progress as it's the only thing to do once you've been there. Like gh15 said, turning pro should be perfection then after that competing as a pro just turns into a size game because it's really all you're left to try to improve with. The only way to try to maintain your present size is by not training/juicing in the offseason and just doing a Levrone-style prep. But even then I don't think anyone can recreate their densest, most crisp package that they had turning pro or in their rookie year as a pro, even by doing that.

I agree 100%. Damn near everyone looked better smaller. Take Ronnie for example, he went from having great symmetry to some of the worst ever seen inside of 6-7 years.

you guys are fags... :)
bigger = better, as long as aesthetics stays in tack

you think you looked better when you were big candid?
-
Now if this was a thread about what GIRLS looked better smaller I'd be much more interested.

well ive never been big so i am not sure how to answer that question..
-

Can't have both. Aesthetics are non-existant in this day and age.
-
at the end its all about having twat on your face so its better to stay aesthetic.
-
in tack? That would be intact candijizzle

okay spelling police, lol TWF..this isnt an academic board its bodybuilding
anyways, coach, there are PLENTY of examples of guys who are mass monsters but stay aesthetic
cormier, flex, ronnie up untill 2003, but once again in 2005 he was aesthetic, jay up untill 2001, and once agaijn in 2006; levrone was always aesthetic, nasser always kept his tight waist... ruhl in the grand prix series after the 2006 mr o was phenomenal... the list goes on and on..

Cormier or Flex were not really considered mass monsters.
-

He's only 18. Leave the kid alone.

WELL, 19..
if you dont consider flex in 98 99 or chris 98 and beyond both mass monsters then my friend you MUST be blind

DENNIS james was diced at that weight ,legs were actually strong point defintion and hardness wise.seems bigger his upperbody got less he cared for his legs.levrone shaved head look was biggest 96/98 was big as a house all over.shawn ray never played that game stayed consistent got rewarded but most people here think he was boring for not drastically changing with the times.
-
when i say ive never been big see i am being honest and i am speaking in bodybuilding related size measurements.
if i were to think of myself compared the average NYC joe, like jae does here, well then i would talk a big talk and think i look awesome...cuz compared to the average joe sure i do; but having a false sense of self confidence is not for me; maybe that works for guys like you jae.. but i prefer to live in reality

I agree. Watching some of the better amateur shows of the past and present its apparent how much better some bodybuilders look smaller.

I don't think anyone has ever had better triceps than Levrone did at the 92 NOC.
Wrong.

Kevin Levrone looked better when he was in the high 240s imo than 225.
He may of had the condition when he was lighter (1992) but he was more complete in 2000 and overral his best showing (according to Kevin and from the VHS tapes i have).
Flex is debatable, in the 1998 ASC he looked incredible aswell as 1993.
Some people can pull it off and some others can't
-
Wrong.

Wrong.

please, they were toothpicks compared to Levrone's.
Also Kevins arms looked incredible from the front because of his large triceps, its not just the side tricep pose where the muscle has emphasis on.

I think Kevin looked better when he was bigger as well. But he is one of the few
-
Taller guys like Wolf and Freeman have such HUGE frames that they look alot better heavier
-
I always said Mr. Levrone's 92 NOC physique was the best ever
they all looked better when they were smaller
E

I think once you have your ideal physique mass-wise, you should just stay on the diet pretty much all year long at about 10-15 maximum over your contest weight
without ballooning up in weight, you can make small gains and just correct the few areas that need correction
here is a picture of incredible canadian bodybuilder Larry Vinette, who was GUEST POSING IN OFF-SEASON SHAPE
since he got a good base with his muscle mass, he just stay lean all year rounds and make few adjustments to his physique and he is better year after years
(that physique is my inspiration, I'd like to look like that better than to look like pretty much any pros. that's perfection for me)

Wow. He looks better than 95% of the IFBB pros today!
