He wasn't just talking about the auto industry. He specifically stated that he refused to let Detroit go bankrupt. The emphasis on the auto industry was to establish his belief that he could attain economic prosperity in Detroit THROUGH the auto makers in Detroit. As always, he was wrong. Or lying.
