Defeated just months ago, more potentially on the horizon:

I have absorbed my defeat

Arnold Schwarzenegger asked Californians to move beyond a year filled with acrimony over his failed special election and devoid of significant political accomplishment.

"I have absorbed my defeat and I've learned my lesson. And the people, who always have the last word, sent a clear message -- cut the warfare, cool the rhetoric, find common ground and fix the problems together," Schwarzenegger said before a packed Assembly chamber. "To my fellow Californians, I say, 'Message received."'

The governor's speech was his third State of the State address but was widely viewed as among the most pivotal appearances of his political career. Facing re-election in November, his task was to persuade Californians to set aside any lingering bitterness over last year's election campaign and regain the bipartisan image that made him so popular his first year in office.

The vision Schwarzenegger laid out in the 23-minute speech proposed a bold program for rebuilding the state's aging freeways, bridges, schools, universities, court systems and levees. He also proposed building two new prisons and improving the state's air quality.

The governor proposed spending $222.6 billion in public works improvements over 20 years, to be paid in part by $68 billion in new general obligation bonds.

His plan would need to be approved by the Legislature and then go before voters in a series of elections between 2006 and 2014.

Schwarzenegger said his plan is necessary to keep pace with California's expanding population, which is expected to hit 46 million people by 2025. The state has not embarked on such a massive series of public works projects since the 1960s, and the governor said it faces an estimated $500 billion in so-called infrastructure needs over the next two decades.

"Our systems are at the breaking point now," he said. "But we cannot be overwhelmed by this reality. We cannot freeze in the face of this future. We cannot bury our head in the sand and say, 'If we don't build it, they won't come."'

Don't give Arnold so much credit. Mike was already into taking various types of speed to "stay more alert for studies" AND for cutting up.  ;D

Actually, it was 3-5 contests when he was younger. And the above men you mentioned are not the only ones to have beaten Arnold. Add Harald Maurer and Helmut Cerncic. Here is Arnold at the 1964 Mr. Austria where he took 3rd. Kurt Marnul (the winner) can be seen with his trademark shades.  8)

Believe it or not that is me on the far right. I didn't bother to shave or tan because I thought the standard would be shit.
At that time I was just about to leave the Blackwatch after spending 5 years as a master sergent in Berlin. At that time the Brits, Russians, Americans and Frenchies guarded checkpoint charlie on the east Berlin border, Happy Days.

David New has researched Arnold's early contests- buying relevant copies of German language mags and having them translated. What I had believed proved to be inaccurate.

Here is a thread- which is not David's latest research- but appears on Wayne Gallasch's site:

Some pic were posted on Getbig of me when I was 70 and my face is the same. I'm too weak from the Chemo to look up other pics but it really is me. Only the top 3 were announced but maybe Joe Roark has info which will show I was there.

If true, he was quite the bodybuilder, I must say.

I was there too! It's crazy to imagine I was competiting against Arnold back in those days, but I'm too tired and lazy to look up other pics, but I was really there. Only the top 3 were announced, but maybe Joe Roark has info which will show I was there.  ::)

That is not Jimmy Thomson onstage with Arnold at the 1964 Mr. Austria!

The contestant is actually Adolf Ziegner, who went on to compete in the NABBA Universe and the IFBB World's. The original contest report for the 1964 Mr. Austria is in issue 21 of Der Muskelbilder, which has more pictures of Ziegner. Jimmy's name doesn't appear in the report and Jimmy isn't any of the other contestants in that photo either. Neither does Jimmy appear in any of the two dozen or so onstage and backstage photos that have survived from the three contests held that day. The contests were held in Graz, Austria. Quite a way from Berlin.

Would a British citizen be allowed to enter the Mr. Austria anyway?

Perhaps it was another contest in Graz or Germany that Jimmy entered. If he lets us know, I'll be happy to look it up.

The picture was posted by Harald Maurer (2nd from right in the line-up). http://www.mahag.com/harry/spo.htm Another line-up pic on Harald's site has Ziegner standing front and centre.

Arnold was defeated in 4 contests in 1964/5.
1964 Mr. Steiermark (4th place, 26th April, Graz). Harald Maurer won.
1964 Mr. Herkules (3rd place, 26th April, Graz). Helmut Cerncic won.
1964 Mr. Austria (3rd place, 26th April, Graz). Marnul won.
1965 Mr. Austria (not 1st, Spring, Graz). Arnold's placing unknown, Marnul won.

There may have been another contest in 1965, which Arnold may have won but that hasn't been confirmed yet. Arnold didn't compete in 1963.

Ziegner also did 1983. I have a complete set of Universe programmes from '64-'73, as well as a complete set of H&S covering 66-77. I'd go through them but there are too many. Could Jimmy narrow it down for us? I've seen pictures of him as a senior, it would be interesting to see how he looked when younger.

It may have been the 83 Universe as you say, heres a link to a thread and pics i posted of Jimmy. One of the members on ironage says he competed in the Masters in Scotland in 83,so he may have qualified for the Universe then.
