He couldn't bring his AC conditioning to the Olympia stage.
-
yeah but he still had incredible lines
-
It was the 90's. He had to be better than Dorian or Ronnie. He wasn't when he needed to be. I also read he was a bit of a slouch that relied on drugs.
-
yeah but he still had incredible lines
To me he's the best built bodybuilder of all time...Outside of Lee Haney

agree, but must add Ed Corney too for his incredible posing as well

Well, he never won so this thread can be closed.

Unfortunately when the past looks better than the present, that too isn't a healthy thing.

Well, I def agree that many things were better in the past, but we need to get over that.

Dorians granite muscle and straited glutes next to Wheelers oil bags and fat ass = game over

Wasn't he on the short side?

Flex didn't have oil in his arms when competing against Dorian... Flex had somewhat striated glutes in 93 (The O) albeit not like he did at the Arnold. It is true that he did have problems in that area, but it was usually at higher body weights.

i agree, but when the quality of the present sucks, and you see the quality of the past, how can you get over it. It's like not even regression, it's like some form of twisted, perverse progression.
Wasn't he on the short side?
Flex was 5'10.
-
For the 1000th time Flex's 98 Arnold condition, was his best ever! He couldn't duplicate it for the Olympia therefore he lost to Ronnie in 98. He was never again able to get in that condition probably from his kidney problems and going against Ronnie!
-
Song by H-Town called "They Like It Slow". I believe it was produced by Devonte Swing, of Jodeci. It has his signature sound.
-
Can't say I'm impressed by the 98 version of Flex. Obvious oil in is arms and delts, arms overpowering his chest, back not nearly as defined as in '93. His structure wasn't made for the mass game. Best showing ever: 93' Ironman or AC.
-
Flex was pretty narrow
-
he didn't win the Olympia because he was attacked by Ninjas ferociously and he never recovered

he didn't use oil it was esiclene every bber used it back then

In 98/99, it wasn't esiclene he was on. Straight up oil like Nasser. Bbers are liars. That 99 video is as good a proof as any. Fuck, look at the delts and triceps in certain poses, it's so obvious it's not even funny. He shouldn't have even placed 2nd in 99, Cormier was way better than him that year.

lol if u shoot oil u see no separation no definition whatsoever look at his shoulders and tris all u see is separations and lines... maybe he used oil later on his career but in 90s he clearly didn't use oil.. At 99 Mr.O he had the perfect combination of mass + aesthetics

This is from 99. Sure, no oil. ::)
-
lol funny how u put a very bad pic and also black and white :D
-
The pic is bad because he is oily.
-
this is perfect flex right there
I agree Flex's shape and round muscle bellies are the best! But he was holding water there, he never again achieved the condition of 98 Arnold! If anyone can post pics!

Flex was good at applying things...didn't go overboard.
Back in 99/2000 Shawn Ray had commented that his shoulders look like bee stings.
When Flex flexed in a pose from 99-, he had no pop, no real separation in the delts, and arms and calves. He had striations...but he lacked the separation that he had up until 97. Also his calves took a turn for the worse. No separation of the calf muscles, the muscles didn't Flex or contract, just big lumps.
The quality of Flex's muscles were not that of the early to mid 90s.
-
That's why...

I think its because of cheeseburgers and fries :D ruhl said this in one of his seminars he said he was getting ready for the o and trained in the same gym with flex and dex he saw them both everytime after the gym in fast food restaurant eating cheeseburgers and fries the whole week before the o and flex came 2nd.. I think that was 99 mr.o ;D
-
Flex was pretty narrow
X2.
Flex was something like Dexter's torso with Dillet's arms and then some oil....
Had he competed post Ronnie era he would have beaten Dexter, jay,Phil
WoooSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
-
He couldn't bring his AC conditioning to the Olympia stage.
This and for the same reason Vince Basile does not have a sandow . . . The IFBB is all politics.
THE BEEF

and a mudman like phil head does wins a mr o..

Yes and he is staying out of the nursing home by still training at 80 but missing out on some hot bitches there.

the guy is an inspiration: still workouts every day and for sure he's not using small weights! Unbeliavable

i wish i looked that bad in a black and white pic

First of all, I was perusing in the middle of the night and accidentally found this vid. What I was intending to watch was the Jay Cutler vid. I am most definitely not living in the past or trying to beat a dead horse.
Thought it would be cool to hear opinions again even though we've heard them over and over.
It's funny... someone called him a "slouch" and a drug user. Of course. They all used drugs. That's a no-brainer, but when you are standing on the stage, that is not what you are being judged on. You are not being judged on how many times you went to the gym, how much weight you lifted, whether or not you kick your dog or cat... surely you get the point.
As far as living in the past? Yeah, living in the past, as in clinging to it and NOT moving on with your life, that is another story. You could say that about rockers from the 80's who can't accept today's music. Healthy or not, it doesn't really hurt anyone.
The other thing that really got me is that Flex really did have a great presentation. I guess I was kind of thinking out loud. He looked amazing, but I'm not a guy who has Flex posters plastered all over my wall while I sit in the corner sobbing while I rock back and forth wondering why he never won an "O" ~
Lol ~ you guys are too much fun for just one person.
There were some good answers here. Flex did have the genetics. Maybe his attitude did play a little into his placings.. who knows?
We all know Arnold won a show that he NEVER should have won in a million years just because of his attitude, his friends and his influence and money.
Oh well, thanks kids! Peace out.
Next vid, why didn't Chris Faildo ever do dope?
Or, who wouldn't mind having Chris Faildo's physique and be drug free?
-
That's why...
Probably the best answer yet. Truth.
-
he did not win because he had smooth hams and glutes, this destroys your mandatory poses and querter turns, brings them down a lot
-
I would be happy if they all had a Mr. O
Lee L.
Shawn R.
Flex W.
Chris C.
Nasser E.

Same question could be asked about Kevin Levrone, Shawn Ray and Nasser El Sonbaty, Rich Gaspari, Lee Labrada, Mike Mentzer, Tom Platz, Danny Padilla, Robby Robinson and MANY others.
2-fold reason.
1. The competition at the time they were competing was out of this world. EVERYONE brought their A game.
2. The sport was Oligarchic. The #1 spot was SEALED and it wasn't about who was going to be #1, but who was going to be #2. This had been the trend since 1970. Arnold won 7 times. Lee Haney 8 times. Dorian 6 times, and Ronnie Coleman 8 times. That's 29 victories among 4 individuals in a span of 35 years. Do the math.

I would not call Flex "Narrow". I would call Flex, "not wide". Jay Cutler is wide. Flex is not wide, Heath is narrow.
-

Dorain's 93 win was the most dominant in history. It was over the minute they stepped on stage.
-
1. Tons of oil
2. Olympia conditioning usually sucked cock
3. Narrow frame
4. Fake calves that look ridiculous
-
Flex ruined himself in his later years. The amount of oil or whatever the fuck it was he was using (does it matter?) was outrageous. He was basically perfect in 93. It was all downhill from there. Then add to that he had to deal with a prime Coleman.

It has to kill Flex, Kevin, Shawn and Chris that Cutler the fridge has 4 Sandows and they have zero combined.
Many things in life are all about timing. The 90s were a tough time to be a bodybuilder unless your name was Dorian or Ronnie.
Cutler wouldn't have made a posedown in the 90s.

I always said 1993 was his best , but Peter McGough agrees with you that 1998 Arnold was , and it's funny you mention that because Flex admitted he was off at the 1998 Olympia and said if he showed up like he did at the Arnold he would have beaten Ronnie , easily !!!

Flex at the 98 Ironman and Arnold we're a little better than 93 which was obsurd. Flex at his best will always be in conversation with anyone else and their best. I don't think we'll see anyone closer to perfection than Flex. Other guys just outworked him with conditioning and size.

Not even close. Arms and delts full of oil and subpar conditioning.
-
Even before he got his Pro card he said that he wouldn't work out after his competitive days are over...
And Shawn had got on him in an interview he did in the late 90s where he said the same thing. And who is the one who still is lifting weights? Flex Wheeler

Flex was supposedly "off" at his 1993 Mr. O showing. I didn't see it. He looked ridiculous at 232 pounds. He had his X-mas tree on his back and his arms were insane. That said, 1993 Dorian had too much size and quality muscle (256-257 pounds of it) and THAT was the game changer, not cartoon-like looking Flex, but if he had a true shot, it was 1993 imo.
-
Grow up, get over it...

Just watching the sky man.
Watching the sky while lying on the ground brings inner peace, I should do this more often.
