Title: Billion-dollar climate denial network exposed

Source: Ars Technica

An extensive study into the financial networks that support groups denying the science behind climate change and opposing political action has found a vast, secretive web of think tanks and industry associations, bankrolled by conservative billionaires.

"I call it the climate-change counter movement," study author Robert Brulle, who published his results in the journal Climatic Change, told the Guardian. "It is not just a couple of rogue individuals doing this. This is a large-scale political effort."

His work, which is focused on the United States, shows how a network of 91 think tanks and industry groups are primarily responsible for conservative opposition to climate policy. Almost 80 percent of these groups are registered as charitable organizations for tax purposes, and collectively received more than seven billion dollars between 2003 and 2010.

Among those named as key nodes of the network were the American Enterprise Institute, which claims to have no institutional position on climate change, and the Heritage Foundation, which campaigns on a number of issues.

AHAHAHA

it's all coming crashing down again, the fantasy world you live in just got a dose of reality. welcome back 33, how was the Romney landslide?

The funny thing is that most denial scientists are supported by these same groups. What it does is make people who really care have to rebut this stupid shit over and over. The just keep churning out the docotored graphs, the asinine comments like "it's snowing outside" etc..

So first there was no problem, now you are saying who gives a fuck because we can't fix it? your an idiot and a direct cause of the problem. First you ignore reality, let it build to a breaking point, then because you have no idea what you are talking about, suggest that we fold are arms and watch. I realize not facing reality and doing nothing are your mantra's but there are solutions and instead of halting solutions just get the fuck out of the way.

Also, quite the display of leadership by the patriotic american, they aren't doing it so why should i. Do you think george washington would say something like this? lincon? no they would have lead teh world out of the dark fucking spot it;s in. There is a problem, it needs fixing, it starts with the industrialized world.

I read this paper, it's actually peer reviewed, in a good journal with sig power. This is legit, how isn't this fraud or a crime against humanity. These people are actively hiding, obfuscating real science and potentially harming the earth so they can profit and continue raping the earth. Why do people support them, they want money, that's it.

Al Gore is teh same, money, he exploited a problem for money, life isn't black and white, global warming is happening and al gore can still be an asshole and wrong. I think the major problem is that you guys are getting your science, not from papers, or profs, but newscasters and biased agenda driven anal polyps.

These guys spent 7 billion to deny climate change, and people are starving in the street. Countries like the atoll paradise the maldives will be gone and it's a result of these people and their ilk. They are raping the earth makign massive profits, hiding the money, effecting public policy to make more money, combatting science and facts to lie and deny in order to rape the earth and make more money. Then dario is going aroudn posting the same 17 year bullshit he has posted 5 times , hoping that sheer quantity precedes finding truth.

so your saying you don't believe in global warming

I don't believe in human-caused global warming.  In fact, the global warming fanatics have had to backpedal on the rate of "warming" their models predicted over the last ten years.  Because...it...didn't...happen.

When I was a kid, the climatologists were predicting a second ice age by now, using "highly validated models".

However, there is now a huge, multi-billion dollar industry supporting this latest false theory, and any scientists who dissent from the apocalyptic predictions of charlatans like Al Gore, have a very hard time getting research grants or even getting published.

I guess you are not open to the possibility that these particular "peers" might not even allow their skeptical colleagues publication.  In fact, there was a bit of a scandal a few years ago when some of those "objective" peers were caught red-handed doing just that.

Well there are other views, especially now that the predictions of the vaunted "global warming" models have been discredited.  And these other views are from scientists with every bit the same level of credentials as the global warming crowd, your gratuitous attacks on religious beliefs notwithstanding.

Check these out; your brainwashing may yet be reversible:

And these guys are not funded by the Koch brothers; they just don't buy the increasingly discredited global warming pablum.

Tell me this:  If you went to a doctor and he told you you had six months to live, and you were alive and well six months later, would you say "Well, he still must have been right, even though I am still in great health, because his research was "peer reviewed?"

All kinds of false theories have been published in the "peer reviewed" journals of their time.  Google "luminiferous aether" for one example.  There are many.

Stop arguing with "doc", this is settled science. The debate is over, there are no facts to support anything you have to say. If this debate was happening on the reddit science board you'd be band. Feel lucky your not kicked off the board. Some other issues that are settled debates are: The IRS scandal, the Bengazi debacle, Obamacare, Syria, NSA spying, spying on the media, mainstream media bias, Obama's past prior to 2008..these things are all just hype. Don't bring them up ever because they're settled.

I guess you are not open to the possibility that these particular "peers" might not even allow their skeptical colleagues publication.  In fact, there was a bit of a scandal a few years ago when some of those "objective" peers were caught red-handed doing just that.
Quite the contrary. I have a decent idea what is going on in the scientific publishing world, and even specifically this particular journal. And I did see a bias when I investigated. However, I realise that the truth is always somewhere in the middle. I do not trust career warming advocates, but neither do I trust scientists funded, in part or in whole, by the Koch brothers. What I do trust is indirect research (plant migration and such) confirming warming. Mind you, I'm not saying 'man made' warming, as I have not seen any definite proof of that. Humans are increasing greenhouse gases, the planet is warming, but whether those are causally linked remains open.

In this case I err on the side of caution. Yes, we may spend billions in energy infrastructure we do not need to spend. Which would suck if truly unneccessary. However, the cost of the alternative, inaction, are potentially much worse.

Yes, there are other views. A very small minority of views. The majority certainly is't always right, but the wisdom of the crowds does hold some weight.

Also, anything to do with religion is a cancer upon this world and deserves all the ridicule it gets.

Thanks, already read all of that. And so, so much more. Still a regular reader of WRH, just because I need both sides of the story in order to make a balanced decision.

What a terrible straw man. First of all there is no peer review in medical decision making (well, there is now, and it is slowly gaining popularity). And second, yes, I would still trust the doctor. Perhaps remind him to work on his phrasing of odds in probabilistic events, but he's a doctor, not a statistician, so I'd probably let that one slide.

Yes, there have been many theories refuted in scientific literature. That's the beauty of it. It's just that, until that happens, the standing theory still holds. And no lame excuses about not being able to get published. There's so many Open Access journals now that you can always find a publisher for anything. You'd be amazed at the shite that gets published in scoentific journals in all field.

Baloney.  The hottest periods on record in human history date from the Middle Ages, and there were no green-house gas emissions then, unless you count the methane from farts.  Maybe everyone was just constantly farting then.

To be fair they did eat a lot of beans.

The warm period became known as the MWP, and the cold period was called the Little Ice Age (LIA). However, this view was questioned by other researchers; the IPCC First Assessment Report of 1990 discussed the "Medieval Warm Period around 1000 AD (which may not have been global) and the Little Ice Age which ended only in the middle to late nineteenth century."[13] The IPCC Third Assessment Report from 2001 summarised research at that time, saying "…current evidence does not support globally synchronous periods of anomalous cold or warmth over this time frame, and the conventional terms of 'Little Ice Age' and 'Medieval Warm Period' appear to have limited utility in describing trends in hemispheric or global mean temperature changes in past centuries".[14] Global temperature records taken from ice cores, tree rings, and lake deposits, have shown that, taken globally, the Earth may have been slightly cooler (by 0.03 degrees Celsius) during the 'Medieval Warm Period' than in the early and mid-20th century.[15][16]

I'm not going to argue whether climate change is real.  Those on the right have to admit the huge interest corporation have in denialism.  It's easy to see the interest the left have in promoting climate change. But I seldom see those on the right acknowledging the huge money interest corporations have in undermining climate research.  This reminds me a lot of the tobacco industry campaign of misinformation.

before someone says it's not my responsibility? if you contributed to the problem you should at least hel.p, of which the least is not obfuscating the people trying to fix it. Stop posting anti-warming alarmist purchased propaganda, it just spreads further mis-information.

You definitely don't have kids otherwise you wouldn't speak the way you do. you plan on leaving a shit hole for them? somebody else will fix it right? aw that good ol republican personal responsibility in progress, to me you sound like that dude in the group project who doesn;t pull their weight yes supports group work.
