Skiing accident.
The most successful Formula 1 driver ever for unlearned Americans.

(CNN) -- Michael Schumacher, the most successful driver in Formula 1 history, is in critical condition after suffering "severe head trauma" in a skiing accident in the French Alps on Sunday, hospital officials said.
The 44-year-old German, who retired from the elite motorsport for the second and final time in 2012, fell and hit his head on a rock, said the director of the Meribel resort where Schumacher was skiing.
Schumacher was in a coma when he arrived at the University Hospital Center of Grenoble and required immediate brain surgery, hospital officials said in a written statement.
Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte initially told CNN affiliate BFM TV that the injury "is not very serious" but the station later reported it to be "severe head trauma," citing police.
In a phone interview with CNN, Gernignon-Lecomte said the incident happened just after 11 a.m. local time (1000 GMT) while Schumacher was skiing off-piste (on unmarked slopes) in the mountains of Meribel resort between Georges Bauduis Piste and La Biche Piste.

Sort of like Ryan Dunn from Jackass. Survived all the crazy stunts he did and then he dies in a car accident.
-
Reminds me of Graeme Hill, 2 time world champion and le mans and Indianapolis 500 winner who retired in 1975 after the Monaco grand prix and then died in a plane crash before the year was out.

Heard this on the radio on my way to work. Sounded very serious. I hope he pulls through it alright, always seemed like a good guy and public figure.

2013 skiing accident
On 29 December 2013, Schumacher was skiing with his son at a resort in Méribel on the French Alps when he fell and banged his head on a rock. Schumacher was skiing outside the marked pistes at the time and sustained a head injury, even though he was wearing a helmet. He was attended by two ski patrollers and airlifted within fifteen minutes to a hospital in Moûtiers, and then on to a bigger hospital in Grenoble specialising in brain injuries.[188][189] It was later revealed that Schumacher was in critical condition and coma due to suffering a brain trauma, and had undergone neurosurgery.[188]

Same reason arnold got in so many accidents after years of plugging ugo's without harm. Risk takers are morons.

A helmet does not protect you from a lot of things.
Senna didn't have a single scratch, bruise or broken bone on his body.
One of the bars that hold the tires broke and hit Senna..a little above his eye.
Now look at this picture... how big is the space?
Senna just run out of luck.
-
The irony...

Senna is the best of all time, competed in a much tougher era and accomplished more in such a short period as well.
That being said, hope Schumacher pulls through, my fellow German

Oh the irony, risks life and limb daily driving hundreds of miles an hour, falls over while skiing and ends up seriously injured.
