There is nothing more pathetic than a bunch of adults getting all bent out of shape over sports. I never understood the appeal to being a sports fan. Great, your team wins, but you still have accomplished nothing in your pathetic life. Perhaps people feel like they have accomplished something when their favorite sport team wins. But in the end, you have accomplished nothing. You're just standing on the shoulders of giants. Who cares if your team wins or losses. It does not affect your life in the slightest.

This is all true, yet following amateur and pro sports is among the most popular pastimes in the whole world. People may not feel a sense of accomplishment but they must feel something that satisfies some need in them.
Yes, the something that satisfies them is being part of a group, a mob mentality so to speak. That's the satisfaction. It really has nothing to do with liking a favorite sports team. We are social creatures and we desire to be amongst others. There is nothing more desirable and pleasurable than being around a bunch of people who share a similar interest as yourself (sport team). However, this group or mob mentality can occur in any aspect of life, not just sports.
In my opinion, its more about the emotional aspects of being part of a group than the actual sport team itself.

We are all hardwired by the lord to be in relations with other humans. This is why people join clubs or gangs we enjoy the comorotity of group functions
There is a vacuum shaped hole in each of our hearts that needs to be filled
Some fill it with items or possessions Others fill it with children or pets and still others fill it with sports
At the end of the day it is no more arbitrary then someone trying to get in a car and go down the quarter mile in less than 10 seconds

yes
fundamentally its just how the primal human psyche works. being a part of a big group for to find allies to be able to defend but also for mating purpose. So deep down it really just comes down to survival.
