I dont use straps very much anymore. I do think that straps are useful, but I want to have strong hands so I limit my usage of them. I will use straps only on barbell shrugs & deadlifts.
Now I can understand people using straps on heavy barbell/dumbbell rows or pull-ups. No problem there.
BUT.... I dont understand why somebody would use straps on curls.
-
Barbell shrugs or deads.
Anything else is outright homosexuality.

Actually, you can really emphasize supination with straps on a db curl. DB curls are not going to really build your forearms anyways, you do them for biceps. I made a post on this a while back. Give it a try.
-
I use straps on deads, bent rows, and lat pull downs (yes, lat pulldowns.... my grip gives out way before I exhaust my back doing these, so I use straps. Deal with it).
anything besides back exercises = blatant gayness.

Pullups? ???

I just trained with a guy who used them...
...on seated dumbbell presses.

Straps can also help a lot on the front squat, especially people with long arms.
-

Good call, weighted pull ups are acceptable.

On addition to my straps I usually wear my construction boots, tribal edition, when I approach anything in the realm of 20lbs dumbbells.
My size XS Ferrari t shirt starts to feel really tight around the 5-6th rep...
life's great with veins all over.

Straps for Bicep curls really does work well. Give it a try. Really focus on supination.
-
If you train biceps last or at least well into your workout, your grip can get sweaty, loss of gripping power on the bar. If you already have them on, might as well just leave them on.
-
Straps on DL is the gayness too....either you can lift the weight or you can't.

I favor a double overhand grip though. And straps allow me to get a better deadlift workout. Why is this a bad thing if I'm deadlifting 500+ and I get a better back workout? Plus my forearms are already a well developed bodypart. (remember this is for bodybuilding purposes)
-
I admit my beta-ness here.
I use them on tons of stuff. Barbell pressing (to keep hands from slipping) and even light back exercises and yes...dumbell curls. I agree with Adonis on this one.
My forearms are like my calves...got a genetic gift so I don't care if either of those bodyparts gain more size. They've got all they need for my liking.
Plus, for those of you guys who practice jiu-jitsu, you know it's a way better grip workout than anything in the gym. I do 3x/week, and my grip is trashed. I don't need to hammer it more in the gym.
Flame away!
EDIT: when I was powerlifting, I never strapped on anything. That was 8 long years. So maybe that's why I don't care anymore. I put my time in.
-
Best straps/hooks I`ve ever owned, given to me by Mr. America Joe Meeko.............RIP.
I have used them every back day for the last 12-15 years and they are still holding up pretty good.
-
I got to the point that I used straps on all back exercises to reduce the stimulation to my forearms.

I said it's gay, not bad.

I wonder why ? ;D
-
I`ve seen straps used on DB Front Raises,Lateral Raises,Curls, and Presses...........oddly enough, most guys didn`t even know how to actually put them on the bar properly.
Fucking gyms today suck.
ranting bitterness from an old fuck :'(

Well if that's the case then call me Bob Paris!! :D

Used them on all back exercises especially chins!

Hey Bob, the white Kai Greene here asking if you want to cet together for some hanky panky.
White kai except for the cock, muscles, hair, or grape fruit thing. So pretty much your average tall white guy that lifts.
all homo.

Self-outing here - I even use them for inclining 315 for reps! :D

Great set Jason, even though the straps were a bit douchey! :D
Just kidding bro, great inclines for sure. ;)

Thanks man, yeah I have to admit I still wear them every workout, although I only use black ones now to match the rest of the clothing! :)

Spunky or Spunk Boy to be exact!
-
I've seen a moustachioed, mulletted man use straps, chalk and two spotters for alt db curls with 60s.
-
WTF did you ever see Arnold prime time with straps for curls a weak ass excuse.
-
It's rare..but sometimes I have to use straps for curls due to really bad carpal tunnel flare ups
Bench
-
I use straps to take a piss.
-
Spunky or Spunk Boy to be exact!
X2
-
-Wide grip overhand chins
-Low pulleys row if you are using the entire stack
-Dumbell shrugs over 125's
-Barbell shrugs over 225
-One arm dumbell rows over 125's
Anything else = a severe beating.
-
I like how touchy people are over straps. hahaha
-
Barbell shrugs or deads.

Queue the obligatory pics of Zach Khan and Phil Heath doing barbell curls with with straps on.
-

seriously. Any exercise that your grip is limiting factor can benefit from straps IMHO.... it may look gay but if youre trying to exhaust muscle and you cant because your grip is the weak link (and will always be in most cases), why not use them?
-
I always use them on back and traps, fuck it,when I want to build my grip or forearms,I just work them seperately.
There`s no way you can tax your back fully before your grip gives out.
I do not however use then on cable crossovers! ;D
-
I don't use them unless I am going heavy in shrugs. I used to use them a lot, but got stronger, I guess.
-

they must've seen daddy come home from a hard back workout and abuse mommy with the straps when they were kids

i lol'd

Completely unrelated, but I once saw a dude (some old queen) wear a jock strap over his shorts while training at the same gym Jason Genova works out at. True story.
-
-
Lol.....straps.... ;D
-
So you where looking at dudes???
-
I use Versa-Grip's for back-day (for every set of everything). they're the best fucking thing I've ever 'inherited' (dude from Canada was in the gym for 1 day and forgot them, so I'm keeping them till next year when he comes back .lol).
straps are a fucking pain in the ass to use, and I have small wrists so they hurt like hell when power shrugging 700+
on the rare occasion I did try them for db curls, I actually liked them. felt like the db and my arm were 1 solid piece. same for db laterals... don't believe I ever used them for pressing
-

Funny I use straps when dumbbell curl too, it has a nice feeling, make fun me all you want but I can bench 500lb :P

Somebody here who knows this better than I can maybe answer this - can getting your back stronger than what you body is capable of lifting on it own lead to imbalances that could leave one more susceptable to injury?
I'm asking because a lot of injuries I've seen get chalked up to impblances - hammy/quad, etc....
-

Agreed.. i used them a lot doing Hanging leg raises from a chinning Bar.

That discussion of imbalances is opening up a whole nother can of worms though...
IMO, your comment is correct, except in the concept of back:forearm strength, it doesn't really matter because a huge imbalance here ultimately is not really going to affect your biomechanics.
Now if we're talking quads:hammies, pecs:external rotators....ABSOLUTELY imbalances are something to be aware of.

Thank you sir.
I guess I just have no desire to go to a point where grip is a limiting factor. I found when I shit canned the straps, it took about a month, but I could handle all the same weights. I think I'm at a phase where if I got that strong, I'd end up hurting myself.

Yeah that's a very valid strap-philosophy, I knows lot of muscle beasts that share your sentiments. I try to minimize their use as well except for 2-3 exercise where I've found the good outweighs the bad.

I haven't used straps in years.

Anything 60lbs or over okay for dumbbell curls!
-
I've seen someone use straps on biceps curls and his reasoning was to thicken the bar. He didn't use it as a strap...

Does anyone else use lifting straps while stroking their girthy dong? I used to use versa grips till it accidentally caught onto my balls and tore my sack.
