This is pretty common within the Puerto Rican community?

In other words, it's common for Puerto Ricans to fill a corpse with embalming fluid and suspend them up for display within an environment that commemorates their prior career?

This is very different form of paying respect to the dead. I've never seen this before.

Well to be honest most if their prior careers did involve laying prone on a couch being non-productive.  So the typical funeral does just that.
