I remember years ago there would easily be dozens of threads a month before the Arnold of who's going to win etc... The Arnold is a week away and there's no chatter about it. There's more talk about some fat guys Delorean than there is about this contest. No one gives a fuck anymore.
I didn't even realize the Arnold was next week until I just saw Ron's post about it.
A lot of this has to do with Phil Heath being so unlikeable and just a horrible Mr. O. When the best in your "sport" is a prick that no one likes or respects it is a sure way to lose fans.

Is Phil Heath really that hated by the fans?
-
Things got very boring after Ronnie.
Phil Heath is the worst Mr Polypia ever.
-
after RC things have not been the same
^^ summed up here
RC was a god like figure in bodybuilding, physique no one came close, and he was effortlessly entertaining the way he spoke and the weights he pushed, he never bragged, he's body and training did the talking.
-
Todays guys suck,plain and simple.
-
Philippe Heath is a wimpering emotional fella, who gets upset when he doesn't get respect.
He demands respect just because the judges saw differently than the fans. That's not how to get it.
-
I thought it was all downhill after Bill Pearl ;D

More people know about that Zyzz dude, then Heath true story.. :-\
-
When branch won the arnold i gave up giving two shits about it.
-
Is Phil Heath really that hated by the fans?
Yes, and it isn't because of his physique most of the time. That and the fact that guys like Branch, in his current condition, is getting compared to dudes like Wolf, Dexter, Heath, and Ramy.

Bodybuilding timeline:
1965-1980: Classic era. Halcycon days of the sport.
1981-1993: The musclehead era. The coming of maximum mass and spiraling drug use for freakier physiques.
1994-2001: The golden era. Bodybuilding shows televised, 5-minute motivational segues on sports channels featuring pros doing exercises (eg. Mike Mazz/Flex Wheeler); top physiques in the game on stage; magazines flying off the shelves; beaches and gyms full of wannabe bodybuilders.
2002-Present: The long decline of the mass monster era, the eliminating of bodybuilding shows (even the Mr. O) from all TV networks, the shaming of steroid abusers, and the disappearance of the sport from the consciousness of the mainstream, back to the handful of fanatics and fetishists it started with.

as much as i love the sport, there's nothing worth getting excited about these days
nobody wants to look like these guys

I get excited looking at big rami not sure if he is completing.

Look around the college campus, Buffalo wing night at the sports bar, the beach, the mall, and in the advertising media incl. sports gear/clothing. The metrosexuals have taken over. The warm and fuzzy feminizing of America and Europe is winning.
We are neanderthals in the eyes of the masses. A 13" arm, six pack, zero pecs, skinny legs and zero ass, Brian Seacrest high front flip on your hair, all work these days with the ladies.

From Nasser, one of the biggest of the '90s who knew this sport inside out:
Also I think and believe that bodybuilding reached its popularity peak in the middle of the '90s. It has definitely been declining in popularity for many years. I do meet less and less guys who want to compete. They mostly like to look more like Rambo or like a surfer dude. Big is not really in nowadays. I do not see any better coverage of bodybuilding shows when it comes to the general TV public.
Prophetic article in my opinion.

Ronnie Coleman is one of a kind, never will be one like him ever again. A genetic freak with indestructible liver, impeccable physique and a full head of hair no matter how hard he juiced. The guy was the textbook example of a genetic mold for collecting Sandows.

Not to mention still fertile enough to have triplets after 25 years of turning off the spigot in his pants.

Wolf should be mister O at least 3x

So true. You see shit like "see so and so's buff pecs or six pack" and it's some twink actor with a shit chest and no abs being promoted as buff.
-
Bodybuilding has just become so stupid, it's literally all drugs, gay 4 pay, marketing bullshit supplements, fake shitty tans, and photo-shopped pictures. What the hell happened to proportion and dense muscles that are attractive to women? It's just all so fake, and these guys have zero personality, you'd have a better time interviewing a rock.
-
From the video's i've seen of recent, guys train like fucking pussies nowadays and make up for the laziness with the Boston Loyd style drug protocols. Golden era for Icelord:
More late '90's awesomeness! I used to watch this chick every morning while I made breakfast in high school.

When this

beats THIS

you know it reaches rock bottom

^^^
That isn't the will of the audience or the fans, though. It's a bunch of corrupt, greasy "judges" that are on the payroll of the biggest sponsors to promote their athletes.
And it's also why the average joe doesn't want to be a bodybuilder anymore. The uglier you get, the better you place. Who wants to die at 45 with a gut the size of a forklift wheel? Nobody except a few old farts like Branch/Toney Freeman/Dexter etc. and a handful of naive juicebags with no careers.

That Monica Brandt was a fucking hot piece of ass back in the day. Anyone remember that video of her deadlifting. Faptastic!

Yep, true that sean.
More golden era:
-
1920~ to 1993 -upward trend.
1994 to present - downward trend.

even though many of the bodies were absolutely incredible, you might be right about 94 being the start of the downslide
that was the beginning of having a Mr. Olympia with one friggin arm
