People keep telling me how bad it is but I'm not sure why if you only have a little. I used to drink a 6 pack each day and I have cut that right in half. But people are telling me even that is too much. I know the sugar is not good but I thought a little bit would not hurt me! If it is really that bad I will stop it. :'( I think I amy try the switch to diet but I dont'like the taste much.

You can't be serious ::) "a little" That's at least 120 grams of sugar and empty calories. A total waste.
-
Sugar is bad, mkay?
If a junky cuts his meth intake in half, would you tell him to carry on, because he's only using a little bit and that it won't hurt him?
You don't like the taste of diet pop or plain water because you are a sugar-junky. You just crave the sugar highs. Cut all those sugary drinks from your diet, keep that up for a few weeks and those sugar cravings will pass. And yes, juices are also sugary drinks...
If you keep even only one sugary drink in your daily intake, you will feed your sugar cravings. You will be craving more and more sugar during the day.

You remind me those kids who join the gym to get full of muscles but don't won't to do the hard work required to.
They just want to sit on the pec machine drinking their cell-tech beverage in between doing 10 reps with girl poundages.
You lack willpower and guidance.

You can always pray while siting on the sofa eating chips and pop.

Complaining won't bring you further.
-
What are the thoughts on diet sodas?
I drink these most days with my meals and feel that the carbonated nature of the drinks despite containing no sugar/calories makes me feel bloated.
Should I cut them out altogether?
-
I have one Coke Zero per day....fuck you if you don't like it. I don't drink any alcohol, do rec drugs or smoke nasty ass cigarettes. So fucking what? ;D

I don't believe that artificial sweeteners/flavors belong in a good diet. I would suggest green tea with a lemon.

I agree that a little self-discipline is in order, but let's limit the personal attacks/insults.

Well I'm SOOOOOO sorry I'm not perfect like you. >:(
My above post applies to everyone in this thread.

over ten years ago a friends daughter worked as an intern for a medical group looking into soda vs diet soda. long story short, diet soda is worse than regular soda and regular soda is horrible for you.
death in a bottle.

Good question, I assume the artificial sweeteners.
-
Good question, I assume the artificial sweeteners.
I am curious if it was a direct or indirect reason - i.e. is it diet soda actually making people fat, or is it another reason such as maybe they "think" that, because they are drinking diet soda, they can eat other shit foods without ramifications?
-
in short it is the chemicals used to make the sodas and diet sodas are worse than regular soda. yes, it is partially the sweeteners and the acids used in sodas.
I've never seen a skinny person drinking a diet soda.
-
Well I didn't start it! They did!!
Nobody here is attacking you. I addressed the only questionable response to your post. You are the one to launch into name-calling, which is not permitted on this board.
-
I see people name calling AND posting pics of dildos and naked girls. How come they don't get into trouble!!
You are new to posting here, so I will explain.
The Gossip & Opinion board is more of a free for all where anything goes. It is Getbig's "main" board, and the one that generates the most traffic to the site. Boards such as Training and Nutrition are reserved for more serious discussion about their respective topics. Here, we aim to limit the riffraff that takes place on the more rambunctious boards.
-
I see people name calling AND posting pics of dildos and naked girls. How come they don't get into trouble!!
There are limits, but Getbig is a pretty liberal board 8)
-
Okay. Thank you
No problem. It usually takes a few weeks/months to get a feel for the respective etiquette (or lack thereof) of each board.
-
Maybe one day I can do zero cans. The last two days I only drank 2 cans each day which is very good for me, and I drank orange juice instead. It is an improvement. I tried a diet sprite and it was not to bad although I am a cola girl.
basically you are spoiled food wise. you said water is gross. you need to humble yourself; if you were in a dessert water would be your savior. you need to stop treating food like it's supposed to make you feel good. you said you're obese. if you want to be 25% smaller then you need to eat 25% less food (and that includes beverage with calories). it's very simple really.
if you are 250lbs for example and want to be 125lbs then reduce food by 25% and i recommend increasing exercise to burn the other 25% of calories. if you're not weight training it will take a lot longer to lose the fat. weight training has more impact on body fat than cardio. increasing your protein intake will lower your cravings for carbs and fat, big time.
-
Protein and fats satiate hunger for longer than carbs. One trick many folks have used to kill sweetness cravings and hunger in one shot is to mix about 16-20 oz of water with a few packets of Stevia and chug. The volume of water activates the stretch receptors in the stomach providing a physical feeling of fullness, while the Stevia satisfies the psychological craving for sweetness.
Granted, if you're used to routinely indulging in sugary treats, this strategy is hardly effective, but in serious diet mode, it can keep you sane.
-

Artificial sweeteners cause an insulin response/blood sugar spike in many people.
-
Well I'm SOOOOOO sorry I'm not perfect like you. >:(
You’ve come to the wrong place if you think you’re going to get a pat on the back for making poor choices. That is not Getbig’s style anymore than if I said I used to smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day, but I’ve cut that in half. Kudos for me. Ain’t gonna happen.
You need to lose 100 pounds. You want to look like a bikini model, but you don’t want to exercise. You don’t want to lift weights. You don’t want to change your diet. You don’t want to drink water. 80% of the battle of the bulge is diet so unless you’re willing to make some drastic changes in that arena, your “dream” will always be just that.
-
Artificial sweeteners cause an insulin response/blood sugar spike in many people.
Is it all or some sweeteners?
-
Your really mean and a bully but I don't care. You know nothing about me and I know it isn't 80 percent. You don't even know what you are talking about.
She's in way better shape than you, go 'figure'... ::)
No offence, but your knowledge about good nutrition seems pretty limited, so be humble and take time to do the homework.
-
She doesn't have to be mean about things! I am here to learn about things so I AM doing the homework!
My life experience warns me: don't intervene between two women ;D
All I can say is that we're pretty direct here on Getbig ;)
-
Just shut up! I am trying my best and am making improvements slowly you jerk! >:(
you are a bully.
First off all when you came to this board nobody gave two shits about you and your problems.
I was the only one who gave you some orientations here and even asked galeniko a favor to help you.
He wrote a small essai with truthfull tips so you would reach your objectives. If you folow them you WILL get there.
But guess what? Galeniko waisted his precious time with you, he could be helping shizzo earning his 5000 dollars.
You proven yourself as a waist of everybody time.
Drink your pop and find excuses not to workout and live your 600lbs life.
People told you how it is but you know better.
In September Shitzzo will be entering the Men's phisique in the Olympia weekend while you whatch it at home drinking pop, cola girl.

^^That may be deserved. Mrsmuscles seems to be having a plethora of issues with veteran members; especially for being such a new poster. Not a good sign.
I am considering dumping this thread to the V board, but I'll leave it for a while to see what the other mods think.

I believe there's been studies on this re: sucralose (Splenda). Not sure about other sweeteners, but it seems to happen early in the digestive process - ie; the receptors on/in the tongue, so I would think it would happen across the board.

Believe what you want to believe, but until you reign in the diet, the results of any exercise efforts will be SIGNIFICANTLY LESS than what they would be otherwise. What I DO know about YOU is what YOU have chosen to reveal on this site and my reply is in direct response to what YOU have said. Forgive me if you think it sounds harsh, but after eleven years here I/we’ve heard it all. The faint of heart with thin skin do not last. Those with never ending excuses will not be praised nor achieve results. You want warm and fuzzy, perhaps SparkPeople would fit the bill. IMO, you need a basic, structured foundation – Diet 101; something like Weight Watchers. Most kids manage to graduate kindergarten and even high school before going off to college.
Hi.
I am 25 year old obese female and I am here to change my ways in 2014. I am 5 feet 4 inches and weigh almost 250 pounds. since jan 1 I've already lost 20 pounds so im doing good but I need to do better. my goal is to become an ifbb bikini pro but I know im a long way off.
to tell you the truth I really don't know where to start. I was 269 January 1 and am now 248.
I don't want to get big muscles that looks gross on women haha. but i'd like to be lean and toned.
can you give me something for a beginner that's not going to bulk me up but give me that leaned toned look?
I know they say drink 8 glasses of water each day but is it okay to use other beverages as well? I don't really like water it tastes so gross. I am trying to stay away from pop but I will drink a few cans a day although im trying to cut that down to only 2. I also like juice and coffee.
I would like to loose my fat and then gain a little bit of muscles but not too much. I don't want to get big like a man.
I will exercise but I don't want to change my diet much right now. I am also not drinking as much pop and I am eating a lot of fruit.
I won't do weights yet but I will maybe try jogging. I hate it though because people make fun of me when I run and they call me things like Forrest Gump and other mean things I won't repeat. :'(
Right now I am just going to start running for exercise. I was walking and I lost 20 pounds but now I am no t losing anymore.
I would rather not do a diet right now and just focus on exercise. Taking out alcohol is no problem but I like sugary drinks.
I also don't know if I need to lose 100 pounds but I would definitely like to lose another 50.
I didn't mean it like that. I do want to lose 50 pounds and maybe more but probably not 100. I think I would look to skinny. When I do lose 50 pounds I can decide if I want to lose more. I am heavy but I don't think I look that bad.
If I was so lazy I wouldn't be trying to lose weight in the first place! A person should start off slowly though. It's dangerous to do many changes all at once.
Exercising everyday is not realistic for naybody.
-

As you wish, friend.
:)
-

Relax, this isn't a G-Thang thread.
-
I am loosing weight again!!! I'm down another 2 pounds and I think it's me cutting out more pop! I'm drinking more juice and eating more fruit. I'm also running but I'm only at one minutes still so I don't think its that. I think it's the pop being cut down! :)
Don't reward yourself too soon.
So you replace the sugars from 'pop' (LOL!) by those from juice and fruits? They only benefits I see, is that you get more fibers and antioxidants.
You run for 1 minute? You're 25 right? LOL
Less weight says nothing, your bodyfat % matters.
-
I say leave it here for now. I'm erring on the side of she is probably real and terribly misguided. "She" posted a picture yesterday which I promptly removed for her own good.
Ohhhh! You shouldn't have bothered :D.
-
For your information I didn't give myself a reward! reward is loosing more weight!
Oh yes you do, by saying: "I think it's the pop being cut down!"
You still don't get it, the key is to achieve a better body composition (keeping your muscle mass or increasing it, and lowering your bodyfat %). Weight says nothing, since a scale can't tell you if it's lean or fat mass.
And guess what, more fiber and antioxidants are a gOOD thing!
I didn't knew that ::)
-
Body weight fluctuates throughout the day. Don't get too excited by a 2 lb jump in either direction. From a body composition standpoint, carbs are destructive for most people. Healthy fats promote better weight management and keep your hunger feeling satisfied longer.
As for cardio, there's no need to run. Moderate-intensity cardio for 45-60 mins is quite effective - even moreso in a fasted state first thing in the morning.
-
Ohhhh! You shouldn't have bothered :D.
She obviously didn't know any better. ;)

At least I'm trying. Nobody is very encouraging except for a few people. I will show yout hat I can do it!
I’m not going to speak for anyone else, but a big reason you haven’t received much encouragement is because over the years many knowledgeable veteran members have invested a lot of time and energy in newbies. These “newbies” either disappear in short time never to be heard from again or they turn out to be a gimmick. Sadly, we've been jaded. Noobs need to demonstrate they’re genuine before receiving much positive feedback.

That is the unfortunate truth. On that note, I encourage anyone to use our search engine to find some excellent threads we've had on weight-loss over the years. There's enough info to pick and choose what may suit you best. But, make sure you give it a fair chance - stick to doing it the right way, consistently, for at least a month before making a determination.
Calorie-restriction, food selection, portion sizes, timing, supplements, specific diet protocols, and various exercise methods have all been discussed at length with anecdotal results and scientific facts!
Some good topics to search include:
Keto diet,
Anabolic diet,
Mediterranean diet,
Carb cycling,
Intermittent fasting,
HIIT, or High-Intensity Interval Training
Tabata
etc.

Mrs.Muscles, you're new to GetBig, so you might not be familiar with its history.
I understand that you feel as though you're being attacked, ...but please trust me when I tell you, you're not.
Montague, Princess L, and Necrosis have done one heckuva job turning this board around, cleaning it up, and completely transforming it from the absolute cesspool it was back in 2003/2004 when I first started posting here, and have the well earned & well deserved respect of posters here including myself. Their influence is such that they even have a civilizing effect on some of the other boards.
In my experience not one of these mods has ever bullied, or condoned the bullying of others.
They just engage in tough love. They give good advice, and are extremely knowledgeable.
In the pursuit of our goals, we can have only one of two things: RESULTS or EXCUSES, but we can't have both.
ps: if you want to get on Princess L's good side, ....... pssst: FISH OIL :D
pps: now to my original reason for even responding before I went off down the bunny trail, don't fall into the trap of doing it to show anyone but yourself. Having been the object of a few haters over my lifetime, I realize that anger may fuel motivation... for a quick moment or two, ...but it's not sustainable. When it comes down to it, jealous haters, or loser Internet trolls are completely irrelevant in your life, so it's impossible to sustain the level of anger, or even conscious thought to these cretins in order to keep you motivated. Do it for no one but you. Your love for yourself, and your desire to accomplish whatever you desire and your faith are the only constants that will sustain you through this process. Good Luck, and Much Success To You.

It's nice to also see when members review and modify their posts after discovering that spellcheck "auto-corrects" my name to "Montage."
And, don't forget that I also moderate the super-DUPER IMPORTANT Wrestling board - Getbig's sole bastion dedicated to preserving the rich history of grown men in spandex pretending to fight!

Wow, you sure read that post quickly. lol. Yep, that pesky auto-correct struck again. :P
I would turn it off, but its so much easier, not to mention faster to type with auto-correct when using a stylus.
I sometimes find myself checking what I've typed is exactly what gets placed in the field on my desktop too.
Auto-correct can make you paranoid, ...and it'll make you pull your hair out when typing in a foreign language
And, don't forget that I also moderate the super-DUPER IMPORTANT Wrestling board - Getbig's sole bastion dedicated to preserving the rich history of grown men in spandex pretending to fight!
As much as I love your moderation, ...forgive me if I take a pass on the wrestling board. :P
Now if I were in the UK, auto-correct would have probably changed that last phrase to "taking the piss" ;D
-

I see EVERYTHING!!
Actually, I just happened to be signed in and it was pure coincidence I went to that unread reply when I did. In fact, I was planning a reply, and between that moment and the time I hit the quote tab, you'd already fixed it because it came over right in my reply. I was just having some fun with it! :)

I've got a few more years on you two in the cynical department.

I've lost 4 pounds now! I'm also down to drinking one can of pepsi a day!! I am starting to get used to diet pepsi more now. I drink water but I ad the flavor packets so it's not real water yet. I also am eating more fruit. I really like cherries but they are hard to find. I am slowly changing my ways to all of you haters! Maybe you can do it all at once but I cat.
Good for you, but again: WEIGHT SAYS NOTHING. Has your bodyfat % changed? THAT'S what matters.
We're no haters, we try to be honest here and a confrontation here and there is part of that, since this isn't the "Weight Watchers" forum.
-
I'm not sure. How do I tell? I was going to buy a scale that tells the bodyweight but I was told they aren't accurate. I haven't noticed my clothes looser but I feel better.
That's correct, those scales aren't very accurate (based on various circumstances like lean mass, before/after training and so on...). Your waist circumference is just a vague indication since it says nothing about your body composition.
I would suggest that you visit a gym and ask if they perform skinfold measurements, or seek someone with a skinfold caliper and the experience. Perform those measurements every x week(s) on the same time and conditions, and keep a log of your diet.
-
Keep eliminating the pepsi, eat lots of fruit, avoid junk food and things will slowly happen. Avoid salty foods.
The weight you are losing is not necessarily just fat, it's mostly water retention. Do you take the pill? If you do and stop it will help a lot.

Sorry DP to disagree (sorta) with you again ( :-*), but I wouldn't bother with the skinfold caliper test at this point. At ~40% which she likely is, calipers are going to be extremely difficult if not impossible (they open up just so far ya know). Accuracy isn't at all an issue at this point, just a consistent downward trend, so taping various locations is the easiest method and def. better for the psyche.

Congratulations on losing 4 pounds, MrsMuscles! And good job cutting down on sugary pop to one can of Pepsi a day. Adding a bit of Crystal Light or MiO to your water for a while is not gonna hurt you, especially if it gets you to drink more water. Also, it's good that you are starting to get used to drinking diet Pepsi. One diet Pepsi a day is not gonna hurt you.
Keep learning, keep trying and never give up.

That's actually a good point. I saw her pic, but wasn't really aware of her current shape.

Most fat percentage tests are inaccurate for both, those with a very high and those with a very low percent body fat.
-
Mrs.Muscles, I would completely give up the soda if I were you. Diet sodas use Aspartame / Nutrasweet, Sucralose etc., I'm not too keen to be putting an ingredient known to cause brain lesions, and was once on the Pentagons list of possible agents to utilize for biological warfare. Try putting an ounce of lemon juice and a little stevia into your water bottle, and voilâ, you've got lemonade. ;D
-
Mrs.Muscles, keep drinking your one or two diet soda pops a day and don't pay any attention to BS. Diet soda pop won't hurt you.
For example, for many years people vilified saccharin(Sweet'n Low in the pink pockets), which has been around since 1878. For a while saccharin had a warning label saying that it caused cancer in lab rats. Eventually the warning label was removed because no evidence was found linking it to cancer in humans.
My great-grandparents used Saccharin most of their life because they were diabetics. They lived well into their 80s and 90s without ever developing cancer.
Theodore Roosevelt used it, and he never developed cancer. In fact, he said "Anybody who says saccharin is injurious to health is an idiot."
http://www.fda.gov/AboutFDA/WhatWeDo/History/ProductRegulation/SelectionsFromFDLIUpdateSeriesonFDAHistory/ucm091680.htm
Countries like Canada are considering lifting their previous ban of saccharin as a food additive "following the evaluation of data indicating that it is not carcinogenic to humans".
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/securit/addit/sweeten-edulcor/saccharin_qa-qr-eng.php
If the claims about artificial sweeteners were true, there would be tons of evidence linking them to cancer in humans, similar to the evidence we see linking tobacco to cancer in humans.
I speak of saccharin because it has been around the longest, which in itself is a testament to its safety, but the same applies to other artificial sweeteners used today.

Mrs.Muscles, I have a completely different opinion than the one quoted above.
Saccharin is a carcinogen, and diet soda with aspartame (NutraSweet or whatever deceptive marketing name they choose to call) is unhealthy. Aspartame is a neurotoxin that was improperly approved by the FDA. Prior to it's introduction into the North American food supply, it appeared on the Pentagon's list of biological warfare agents. Soda in itself is not part of a healthy diet, and it is hell on the complexion.
Just because Loco's great grandparents used saccharin, but didn't develop cancer means nothing. There are plenty of people who smoked all their lives, but don't develop cancer, while others who never smoked a single cigarette do. His great grandparents lived in a different place and time. A time when foods actually had nutritional value, nutrition easily bio-available to the body to build strong bodies with strong immune systems. They also lived in a time when adulterated foods and mass fluoridation of the water supply wasn't everywhere. Fluoride is toxic industrial waste that acts as an adjuvant accelerating the potency & absorption of the poisons and toxins we consume. We are eating GMOs that produce poisons. GMO corn has been engineered to self produce poisonous pesticides... so much so that corn is no longer considered a vegetable. It is now officially an insecticide. The US food supply rarely uses sugar. It's all high fructose corn syrup. Another way to say it is 'It's all high fructose insecticide syrup'. Couple all the fluoride absorbed into your skin via bathing & showering, ...and you've got poisonous insecticides, improperly disposed pharmaceuticals, and neurotoxins etc. etc. etc. on steroids. The human body is under constant assault from the foods we eat, the air we breath, the prevalence of wireless technology etc. that it just makes sense to make the healthiest choices possible, ...and diet soda isn't one of them.
As far as sweeteners are concerned, you might want to stay away from sucralose (chlorine & bacteria poop)
We usually do our best to avoid poop. We try not to step on it walking down the street, ...why should we choose to put it into our mouths, ...and swallow it? If you're looking to avoid sugar, why not give stevia a try?

Mrs.Muscles, unlike 24KT, I haven't stated my opinion. I have stated facts.
24KT is Canadian, and even her own country, Canada is considering lifting a previous ban of saccharin as a food additive "following the evaluation of data indicating that it is not carcinogenic to humans".
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/securit/addit/sweeten-edulcor/saccharin_qa-qr-eng.php
The warning label on saccharin packaging in the US was removed for the same reasons.
24KT doesn't know anything about my great-grandparents, and she doesn't know anything about when, where and how they grew up and lived. They lived in a highly industrialized area in oil rich Venezuela, with polluted soil, polluted water and polluted air. They ate red meat, pork, butter, full fat cheese, full fat milk, corn cakes, white bread and white rise. They consumed saccharin heavily for many years, lived a long time and never developed cancer.
But my great-grandparents are not the only ones. To this day, there exists absolutely no medical or scientific data indicating that saccharin is carcinogenic to humans, hence the removal of its packaging warning labels in the US and the soon to come lifting of its ban in Canada.
Mrs.Muscles, listen to the facts, not empty opinions, and enjoy your diet soda!
