Eckhart Tolle The Power of Now
Eckhart is the gayest human being and the greatest snake oil salesman ever. That booked sucked massive dogs balls. I can't believe people get sucked in by all that pseudo spiritual nonsense. Yet another newage profiteer making millions of the gullible, restless masses.

Dice man by Luke Rhinehart - fiction but one that really makes you think...
I also read about half of 120 Days of Sodom by Marquis de Sade but I couldn't stomach any more of it and I consider myself fairly open to filth.
Has to be said that for some reason Josh's board name and avatar reminds me of that distasteful piece of literature.

The greatest miracle in the world by Og Mandino.

Pretty much all of Pat Buchanan's books. Like reading prophecies. That man should have been president. He was/is right about virtually every single thing.
Also, ive read many good works on ancient civilization/egyptology/origins of civilizations that will blow your mind...how little we really 'know' about our own history/origins and some of the incredible, yet unexplained things the ancients were able to accomplish.
-
The Magic of Thinking Big by David J Schwartz - it was the first self-help book I read, think I was about 18 or 19 at the time.

I really enjoy reading about ancient architecture, temples and monuments and whatnot. It amazes me how people were able to build such things thousands of years ago.

Yes its a favorite subject of mine. Its amazing how much is passed off as 'facts' that is really just speculation and theories. Things like the pyramids of Giza as well as the valley temple and other structures...we still dont know who, why, when, or HOW they were built. I love it

Yet, but all in all, apart from a few unexplained phenomena, they were pretty primitive peoples with superstitious societies and in comparison to today, pretty shitty technology. I think the glowing admiration of ancient societies is completely inflated and overhyped. So what, they piled some rocks on top of one another and built a pyramid shape, woopty doo. We're sending men to the moon, transplanting hearts, mapping the entire dna code, developing earth destroying weaponry etc etc, yet most of the ancient civilisations struggled to invent shoes.

Changed direction of thinking.
Illusions ...Bach. Autobiography of a Yoga...Yogananda. Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged...Ayn Rand. Kipling Collected Reader.
Had to read The Book Of Mormon when a teenager. Compare it a little to reading L Ron Hubbard. Both more like reading science fiction than a belief system (just my view). But I'll let people believe what they want to believe.

he makes alot of money no doubt, snake oil? if the message was warped then maybe but his words are direct and helpful to bring the mind in to stillness and presence, something you obviously give little credence to in your own life.

Film doesnt come any where near the book.
Book is hard work but if you read it properly rather than skip the lists (you will know what I mean when you read it) then the murders are a release, just like they were for Patrick.

the bible back when i used to believe in it, then i realised if there is a god he is a cruel n uncaring being
It's interesting how people come to different conclusions; unfortunately most never dive any further than a surface reading and then abandon ship.
Me, I had a ton of questions, but over time I learned to study scripture with humility and a genuine desire to understand with greater depth how the good and bad stories about the behaviors of biblical folks all point to our need for Jesus Christ. And how God works within the confines of our lives (both the good and the bad moments) to draw us closer to him.

Siddhartha by Herman Hesse: read as a young man, and many times since when I need refreshing. It has opened my mind to the idea that spirituality comes from within, and that one cannot build up until one has mastered the art of learning to let go.
How a 2nd Grader Beat Wall Street: a must-read for all investors...be it the day-trading whizzes on getbig.com to the casual investor in mutual funds. Ignore its message at your peril. I have been practicing its principles since.
The Road by Cormack. A must read for any father. You will be deeply moved. It distils and crystallizes the very fabric that bonds father to child. It didn't so much inspire me, as it reflected many things I felt yet put them more eloquently than I ever could.
Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. A great novel on the plight of the Gen X male. It opened my eyes to what society views my real purpose to be, and why that's just not good enough for me anymore.
Anabolic Reference Guide by Bill Phillips. Hey, I'm a bodybuilder, and this book blew my mind and forced my eyes wide open to a universe I had only thought perhaps existed. This was back in 98.

Those primate people build some very impressive structures, still standing, with mathematical precision that is marveled even today by experts. Including moving those huge stones into place, that even out modern heavy equipment can not move. And with exact fitting with one another, down to almost a nano measurement.. Evidence of brain operations, and other medical arts, from many ancient cultures. Their astronomy skills were amazing, being aware of distance constellations. And mapping the exact movements of our inner planets. All seemly without an aid of telescopes. Those some ancient glyph & written records, suggest that there were lens devices.
Always wondered why pyramids are discovered in just about anyplace on earth, each with similar basic building styles. With the help of satellites, more are being discovered just about every month. And quite a few under oceans and lakes.
-

Oh Brother, bring the mind to stillness and presence. What the fuck are you talking about? And why the fuck would you want your mind to be still? The only reason Eckhart wants your mind to be still is so that you stop thinking so then you won't discover what a charlatan he is peddling pseudo spirituality as some type of objective truth. To simply focus on the present moment constantly is a ridiculous way to live, it's dangerous and can only lead you to waste your life. It simply amazes me, literally, that people can fall for this garbage.

Genesis 19:8
“Look, I have two daughters, virgins both of them. Let me bring them out to you and you could do what you like with them. But do nothing to these men because they have come under the shelter of my roof.”
Deut. 23:1
"No man whose testicles have been crushed or whose organ has been cut off may become a member of the Assembly of God."

I was forced to read the Bible when I was thirteen. I was a believer at the beginning and an science loving atheist when I turned the last page.
-
I read the book awhile before the film. Thought is was much, much better, but that's usually the case.
The book is game-changingly (is that a compound word?) good, versus the movie.
I will admit; I had an especially hard time getting through the passages where Bateman slits the boy toddler's throat in the crowd. I of course still enjoyed the novel and read it all; but it's not often that I react so viscerally in disgust and horror to what someone writes. Plenty of books shock me with their messages (my list above for example); very few are able to visibly move me to disgust and horror. In fact, this has been the only one that I can recall.
Not sure if that's a feather in Easton-Ellis' cap, or even if that was his intention. But I was moved, to say the least.
If you enjoyed American Psycho, give Glamorama a try. A bit more of a challenging read, but I thought it showcased his story-telling with great aplomb than American Psycho (one layman's opinion, which, of course, is worth one tidy pile of shit).

Why men don't listen and women can't read maps. Helped me to be more patient with women. No homo.
Yes, I've read that as well - interesting book. Liked the bit about how it explained why men always get busted by their girlfriends for checking out other women - it's because men have evolved as hunters over the years to have tunnel vision and can only "look" in one direction at a time. They possess poor peripheral vision whereas women are the opposite - they've evolved to sense danger coming from all sides and therefore have greater peripheral vision. The same reasoning about the tunnel vision explains why men make better airline pilots whereas women don't.
-

What nonsense. Women don't have some greater vision than men, if anything, men would have been more likely to evolve such ability, as they were far more often in dangerous situations, being the hunter and protector and all. Contrary to popular belief, women worry less about danger as they know they can get men to worry about it for them. And tunnel vision in an airline pilot is a dangerous thing. When combined with piloting an aircraft, driving, crossing roads or operating heavy machinery, the consequences can be fatal.
ANd their is zero evidence suggesting men are better pilots than women. Ten out of every 100 Army helicopter pilots are women — but they account for only 3 out of every 100 accidents, and that's from an official army report.
For the record, I never get busted by my girlfriend for checking out other women.
The book was obviously written by pro feminist nutjobs, you know the type, where men are subtly put down and women elevated on a pedestal, that sells millions to feminists and their white knight counterparts who collectively suffer from misandry.

That's not true at all, I speak up for what I believe in and when I do my identity is known. Only a fool would identify himself on getbig, it shows a certain naivety. Wise people protect themselves, they don't expose themselves to unnecessary ridicule. David doesn't actually believe what he is saying, he is a charlatan you idiot, he is in the business of selling books. I dare say you hope one day to mimic his success by selling nonsense to the gullible, good luck with that.

Are you seriously suggesting that ancient cultures were more technologically advanced than modern civilisation? If you are,you are seriously ignorant, not just moderately ignorant, but seriously fucked up on a whole other level ignorant. They were a backward, superstitious people with a very limited understanding of the world around them.

I never at any point said all or any ancient civilizations were more advanced than we are dipshit
I said many of them were vastly more advanced than most people realise, in the fields of astronomy, architecture and engineering, as well as many other sciences.
Have you actually studied any of this stuff??? Only a complete fucktard would suggest the structures on the Giza platea or on the high antiplano of south america-just to name a few- were the work of 'primitive ignoramouses who didnt know anythi g about the world around them' and describe such feats of engineering as 'just rocks stacked on top of each other'.
Clearly you have zero actual knowledge of this subject

I read that and it was a great book but it's kind of a turn off when women on dating sites say it's their favorite because that usually means they haven't read a book since Catcher in the Rye in high school. I like smart women so it's a big turn off, seriously go read some dating profiles and see how many have that book as their favorite. :o

Ha, funny you say that. I was just about to add that I read it again as an adult and absolutely could not relate at all. Definitely written for an adventurous (and naive as fuck) high schooler, so you're right. They probably haven't read shit since.

I've only read it the once in high school but I have heard the same thing. Some people read it at different ages in their life and it has a different meaning. Maybe I should give it another go. :D

Are you seriously suggesting that ancient cultures were more technologically advanced than modern civilisation? If you are,you are seriously ignorant, not just moderately ignorant, but seriously fucked up on a whole other level ignorant. They learned some basic maths and physics, they still assumed sickness was because you displeased the gods. They were a backward, superstitious people with a very limited understanding of the world around them.
you are a poster child for the state of humanity today: mind controlled idiots who are infantile spiritually and have the intelect of a 4 yo (this is not an insult but an accurate assesement)

Power of Will by Frank Channing Haddock (available free online since it is from 1905). Great book, very well written and much needed in our modern world.

EVERYONE FARTS it really changed my life and made me understand that the smell under the covers isn't the dog but more than likely my wife.
Angela's Ashes. I don't think it changed my life but it's a great read and one of my favorites.

I spoke about them in my threads about giants back in 2012. There were really giants. They were a hybrid of angelic beings and humans. They were very real. The giants caused many problems and were killed off during the floods. Don't know how but there were giants after the flood also. The skeletons of giants humanoid beings have been found in Africa, Europe, America, Asia and others. Some of them have extra digits and double rows of teeth. Some of the remains are in museums. Annunaki are the angelic beings...a.k.a. Fallen Angels. That's how it ties in with the Bible. It's all real. most are too brainwashed or dumbed down to understand.

What do you think influenced the writers of the odyssey and other greek mythology to describe the creatures and monsters the way they did? Because they had seen them and even lived in the time period they did. Fallen angels known as Watchers saw the daughters of men (cain) as beautiful and lusted after them (kinda like that dripping vag and balls story you made up) and brought forth a fallen race known as the giants. Cyclops, sirens, goliath, all offspring of this abominable relation between man and angel. Job chapter 40 speaks of a beasts tail that is like a cedar tree.
It takes more faith (and deliberate rebellion) to believe we evolved from slime from a random explosion than in the Word of God.

I tend to read informative books. Last one was on restoring paint on cars.
I dont need anyone to tell me how to think or view life...I got it covered . I just had a "moment" the other day...cleaning out some travel bags that had bullshit in them. I pick up a picture of me and my kid when she was 6 years old and got a big cut above her eyebrow..that took 30 stitches to close. I hadn't seen that picture in 6 years. After I stopped crying i got on the phone with her, right in the middle of the school day and took her for ice cream and shopping. I just had to make her day a really good one
Thats life. For me anyway.

Zorba the Greek, 1965.
After reading this book I more or less stopped reading books. Read some books to complete university courses but Zorba felt living was more important that searching for answers via books.
"What is the good of your damn books?" Zorba asked. The 'Boss' replied, "They tell me of the agony of men... who can't answers questions like yours."
"To be alive is to look for trouble. Only death is not. To be alive is to undo your belt and look for trouble."
Karl Popper was refreshing in the philosophy of science. He showed that scientists try to refute theories instead of verifying them. He separated science from non-science.

The Road - Cormac McCarthy
Never read him but saw (I know, I suck) The Counselor recently. Is he always so damn dark? Bleak flick. :-\ I like my art with a little more optimism. Something. Anything. Shit.
-
The counselor was a bona fide 1/5 movie... what a mess
I read blood meridian... overall 'ok'. McCarthy's an incredible stylist, but only a mediocre storyteller.

I liked it, but damn. That phone conversation with El Jefe was distilled cynicism. :(
-
I still maintain the movie was, entirely, an elaborate ploy for revenge on Diaz, after she snubbed McCarthy somehow, somewhere... her lines were pure brutality, no other way to put it.

Really? I think it's an overrated piece of dross. Not having a Hollywood ending only makes it uncommon, not good.

See! It made you recoil somehow too. Rare's the film, anymore, for me. I identified more with the counselor, having his imaginary world shattered.
I knew I was warped when I lol @ the "It was too gynecological" scene. She wasn't kindly portrayed.
Idk, it grabbed me and disgusted me.

Hey phreak you like A Song of Ice and Fire?

Haha, yeah he is pretty bleak (read one of his called Child of God that was quite disturbing). But I think The Counselor was a screenplay he wrote specifically for a film and not based on any of his novel.
But I don't know, I have never been more moved by a book than The Road (film adaptation was okay). For me, it was all about doing what you can for the people who really matter to you during you lifetime. Humans are unique animals in that way.

What does a "Hollywood ending" have to do with a book? It was written as a book first, the film adaptation was okay, but I suggest you read the book and then decide.

Yes,
The book that changed my life was road to reality by Penrose.I was able to formulate the formula for the "secret".

Overall yes. Though not all books are equally good. I am positively surprised about the TV adaptation, I didn't expect it to be this good.
Personally I think Joe Abercrombie's First Law Trilogy is even better to read, but opinions may differ. Too much sex in A Song of Ice and Fire for my tastes. If I want big tits I go home to my wife.*
* or fondle my own moobs.

Teh awesome. I really liked the part where he talks about instead of working for months and months to save for a vacation just walk there. (Paraphrasing of course).
Also cool itemization of the cost of his building materials. 8)

ya man!
what really hit home for me was that eventhough he's attempting to find absolute freedom he realises in the end what he really did was create his own prison. he was imprisioned w the life he had created.
that's what we do here in this life.
everytime I go backpacking I buy a copy at the used book store and re read it. then I'll leave it at the last hostel or place I stayed in the hopes someone else will pick it up. I actually found and read my first copy in Thailand. I figure someone else as clueless as I was about life might pick it up and hopefully get the same things out of it I did.

Arthur Fleeber’s Guns N Provolone, which draws from Karl Marx’s Das Kapital, Immanuel Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason, and the Lake Tahoe scene from Godfather II for the sake of providing an Archimedean paradigm that strips uncanny (Unheimliche) elements from existence to fashion a stable foundation upon which to feel at-home (zu Hause) in the world.

3. Win Forever: Live, work and play by Pete Carroll
LOL! Come on, do you consider Pete Carroll to be a wise person? Would you call him a role model?
