Pretty fucked up...
A TATTOO artist inked his dog Tuesday while the poor pup was under sedation to have its spleen removed — drawing the ire of dog lovers who say canines should only have tats for identification purposes.
Artist “Mistah Metro” — who works at Red Legged Devil tattoo shop in Prospect Heights — posted a photo of the hound on his Instagram page with the caption: “One of the many reasons my dog is cooler than yours!
She had her spleen removed yesterday and the vet let me tattoo her while she was under,” Gothamist reported.
Shop owner Chris Torres quickly distanced himself from the tat — a blood-red heart with an arrow through it and the names Alex and Mel.
“That dog was not tattooed at the shop. Chris Torres and red legged devil LLC had nothing to do with it,” he commented in an online post.
The American Veterinary Medical Association and the ASPCA both took a dim view of the stunt.
“We can’t say a tattoo is going to do enormous damage to an animal,” a rep for the association told Gothamist. “But we do look at whether a procedure is therapeutically necessary first — if it’s not, that’s not the vet’s goal.”
The ASPCA, meanwhile, said it condoned tattooing dogs only for identification purposes – an easier procedure that causes the animal little pain.
“Tattooing an animal for the vain sake of joy and entertainment of the owner without any regard for the well-being of the animal … is not something the ASPCA supports,” the group said in a statement.

I have mixed feelings about this. But it probably shouldn't have been done. Although I don't believe it hurt the dog. I do think it weird that the vet allowed it to be done under his/her care.

i feel the same, the dog wouldnt care if he had a bunch of tattoos but it feels wrong in some kind way

Exactly. Wouldn't have been in any pain, but permanently marking the thing seems very wrong.

its not even a big deal.
If I was a dog I would rather be tattood while under sedation that have my ears cropped (which is common) or tail docked(even more common).

I would love to have both my dogs inked..that way if someone tried to steal them I could identify them easily
That being said both of my dogs are over 130lbs and mean..so I really don't have to worry

Isn't there a chance of infection whenever a tattoo is applied - for that reason alone I would say no, it's not on.

its wrong because the dog is used as an extension of the owners personality, they already take such a dog because its masculine in their eyes in the first place.

The way I see it - I'm happy for a half dead chicken to have it's head cut off or for a pig/goat to have it's throat cut - all in the name of food.
I cannot therefore be so hypocritical as to give 2 fucks what happens to dogs, cats, seals or other creatures that are considered "cuddly".

It's right because this piece of meat on 4 legs is the property of the owner who should be able to mark it in any way he pleases.

Do you realize that the pain doesn't stop when the tattoo is done? The skin has a gazillion tiny holes in it and it takes couple of weeks to heal. So yah, the dog definitely hurt for a while after the sedation.
