"Although I'm nearly 48 now, I think people are going to see me in better shape than I was in the early '90's! If my training continues the way its been going, I believe I am going to appear at the Iron Man exhibiting the best symmetry, proportion and well conditioned musculature of my career. I think my timing is good because judges are again starting to take note of the purer, more classic and aesthetically pleasing physiques. I will prove that age is not a factor if you train and live correctly. I have probably about 15 - 20lbs more muscle than I did ten years ago so what people will see in February is not an older Francis Benfatto, but a completely new version of myself. I hope that through this, I can inspire other 40 and 50 year olds to get back into the gym."

Ask any other pro who has taken that much time off before coming back.  Dillet took less time off - nothing to show.

Only if there are only ten competitors.

Unless, Benfatto is the size of, say, Melvin Anthony, yet still has his classic proportions.

From what I recall, Benfatto usually competed under 200 lbs. I don't have the reference in front of me, but I think the heaviest he's ever competed is 215.

Keep in mind how long it took Darrem Charles to make an impact on the IFBB pro scene. He's gotten bigger, slowly but surely.

How much mass he has added since the early/mid 90s?

Francis --- whether you make top 10 or not it will be a pleasure to see you once again to grace the stage , respect must go out to you for longivity and  passion to come back at 48, even if you showed up with the package you used to present you would be doing your self proud.

I said previously on this board that if you turned up with 10 to 15 lb more muscle you could be a threat , and now you have comfirmed that is what you are doing --- so yes you will be a threat !!

Good luck and enjoy your come back day , and what will be will be !!

MattT~

Even in his heyday (late 80s/early 90s), Benfatto wasn't considered to be the most massive of critters.

Again, unless he has Melvin Anthony's size (or that of Darrem Charles) to go with those classic proportions (assuming he still has those), I don't like his chances.

Keep in mind that Mohammed Makkaway, a two-time Olympia runner-up, attempted a comeback at the IronMan and placed in the pack. And he was even bigger there than he was at the Olympias, where he placed 2nd.

Maybe the question isn't whether he WOULD place in the top ten, but whether he SHOULD?

In his best ever condition Benfatto would probably make very little impact standing next to guys who outmuscle him by 50-80 lbs. Even with an extra 10-20 lbs he might still be less impressive than we remember him simply by virtue of the company he'll be in.
However, IF he were to be given a gift placement; top 5, top 3 maybe, then perhaps that might be beneficial to bodybuilding as a whole.

I notice he's no longer a self confessed natural athlete.... interesting.

I totally agree. Funny how some of these guys are writing him off before the show. If Melvin can place as high as he does being smooth then a slightly bigger just as ripped Francis can.

He has or had one great physique with great proportions other than leg's.could he possibly take the necessary mean's to be competitive in this bbing age.even in his heyday he was outsized by his generation of top guy's,then only handful were 230 and over, now top 8 alone are 235 to 280.compare his height to weight to s ray at time and shawn smoked him in total thickness esp leg's they both competed at 205 to 210.wish him the best.

If he will show up in good shape after such a long time, that is for sure what I call "to make an impact". No matter how he places.
He will prove that it's always a good moment to go back to the gym and go back in shape. And he probably doesn't care if he can't beat the younger guys.

a) who says he isn't?

Of course you don't FEAR competiing against anybody. However, you've made some very certain gurantees about your winning particular competitions. And while to fear a particular competitior would be absurd...I think at the very least you couldn't beat and in shape Vince Taylor. Benfatto, I can't say. However, his proportions and lines from days ago are exponentially better than yours at anytime. With the trend in judeging favoring mass, you may have the "epochal" advantage. But if judgeing his best physique of all time versus yours....Benfatto wins clearly. Now all this is speculative since we don't know what package Benfatto will bring. We can assume a best-worse case scenario for your showing.

None the less, I think it'll be interesting. I think it will be great for the resurrection of professional Masters shows to see you, Taylor, and perhaps Bennfatto and Groulx.

Also, how old is Jablonicky. I thing if he was eligable...he'd have to be a favorite.

Either way, I'm looking forward to what you bring to the stage this year and look forward to you adding to a competitive and interesting season.

Ray can judge because he beat Benfatto in the 90's but did you sir?  Therefore do not count this man out.  He has some serious lines and symmetry along with nice amount of mass, but again this is my opinion and I am entitled to have one.  ;D

i just don't think he will do well. he is on the short side and he will be light, even at 10-15 heavier. they prove it with david henery placings. that they just want the bigger guys to have smaller waists. that rule isn't for the smaller guys. it will be a shame to see him come in great and still place of top 10. i wish him the best though, because those black and whites are serious inspiration to me!

How much mass he has added since the early/mid 90s?

Actually at his best (1990 Olympia where he finished 6th) he was 168lbs on stage. a freind of mine is good friend with Fancis and has done business with him for a long time. He reently spoke to him and he was 98kg (215lbs) and in very good shape. He plan on comming in at around 195-200lbs, in better condition than in the 1990s... so we're talking about a full 30lbs more than at his peak. Francis said that he now has legitimate 53cm (21") arms. Now, I'll have to see that myself to believe it, but not doubt he will carry on a lot more mass than in the past.

It's a matter of seeing how badly his pec tear will affect his look and if hecan nail his conditioning.

Well said Lee,i would love to see him place high in this show. And for the people speculating on what he used to weigh, keep in mind in 1985 he placed 5th in the World Champs in the 80kg class(under 176).This first shot is from the 89 Olympia and the next one is the following year.
Just something to remember when other guys bodyweights are mentioned. ::)

From Milos' board

Quote from:  Milos Sarcev
I didn't want to be the one telling the bad news - but it is true - Francis personally told me that he has certain immigration problems and he doesn't believe he would solve them in time to be here for the Ironman.
So, his return is going to be at the Australian Grand Prix....

I am very sad to hear that and I was hoping that someone from the federation (Ben Weider, Jim Manion...even Arnold) would be able to help him...but Francis told me that nobody responded so far...

Benfato influenced many pros and numerous people around the world and many of us would LOVE to see him back on the stage...

I wish him the best - ALWAYS.

I'm impressed with those pictures.  His upperbody looks awesome and looks comparable to the top pros.   Legs do look too small but the angle of the pictures are not good to judge the legs.   For 47, that's excellent.

yeah, you're right...

Bob's upper body almost looks flawless in this pic, has good quad sweep to... Just needs to work on over all quad/ham thickness and he will be back in da game!..

Most probably he will end up like Lou in the 1992 Olympia (I hope not) … and about the Masters well … is Bob going to be at his best??

If not … Benfatto will nail him …

P.S. we love ya Bob

I got into bodybuilding seriously or should i say consistantly and at the same time became a fan of the pro's and shows a year ago. i had never seen benefatto before and since we have fools here i have to put the disclaimer of (no homo) those benefatto pictures are beautiful i would like to look EXACTLY like that. he looks like what to me bodybuilding is exactly about.

yes but he was more massive than Benefatto. I can't identify with massive people because i was given stick figure genetics. the funny thing is that my calves are tremendous. 17.5 and I never even work them. i only work thighs. i'm kinda glad that i got lucky calves because inside i laugh when i see big dudes with no calves.

Bob Cicherillo's face always reminded me of Joe Piscopo albeit with a tan and a little cosmetic surgery. Although I've only gotten the sense there was cosmetic surgery in recent pictures.

Maybe a hair over 5'4 when I met him. Still in great shape, better than most of the retired pros.
