The U.S Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights has forced a school in Michigan to tear down a brand-new set of bleachers for its boys’ varsity baseball team because the new seating is nicer than the girls’ softball bleachers.

The raised seating deck for the boys’ baseball team, which was paid for with money raised by parents, was put in place because fans who’d come to watch games at Plymouth High School in Canton, Mich., were having a hard time seeing the game through the chain-link fence WJBK-TV reported.

The parents installed the new bleachers themselves and even added a new scoreboard to the field, the station reported.

But after an investigation by government officials, which was prompted by an anonymous complaint, the school was told it had to remove the new seating because it was “no longer equal” to the adjacent girls’ softball bleachers, which have yet to get a makeover of their own.

Further, government officials said, the new boys’ bleachers were not sufficiently handicap-accessible.

The school agreed to tear down the new bleachers after government officials issued a citation.

Plymouth High School superintendent Michael Meissen said the school will hold onto the new bleachers until they can come up with a plan that adheres to strict government rules and is “fair to everyone,” WJBK-TV reported.

The superintendent also said that the school doesn’t have the money to renovate the girls’ bleachers. They will, however, add a new scoreboard to the girls’ field soon:

I hope someone complains and has it torn down since it's newer than the boy's field scoreboard.

there are rules for things like this... sounds like 'the parents raising the money and building them' isn't quite right.

whatever federal/state grants, whatever exemptions, whatever rules/laws are in place... somebody didn't follow something.  This is from theblaze, who really is known for showing the conservative, anti-govt side of things.  Would be interesting to see if zoning, funding, insurance, and other issues are the real reason this was torn down.

1. Doesn't it dismay you that regulations actually exist for something as simple as parents raising the money (didn't cost the school a cent) for bleachers that they themselves set up?

2. Only reasons given is that they were nicer than the one in the girls' field and not wheelchair accessible. Why do bleachers need to be wheelchair accessible and where are these handicapped individuals that need access to such bleachers?

3. Nice job at discouraging those parents from ever lifting a finger at helping those high school sports teams or supporting any school activity.

"prompted by an anonymous complaint"

What loser complained about this?  Good grief.

Well... was it built by a licensed contractor?  Or just a bunch of pre-fab items that the parents put out there?  Who pays when granny tries to climb it (lacking the legally req'd handicap modifications) and breaks her neck and sues?

It's a cool idea and would be nice in the 1950s or in a movie.  But it's sounding more and more like it was just a little fun by parents to make something they needed - and they didn't follow the laws.

If our problem is suddenly with handicap/accessibility laws, okay, that's fine... but blaming "the gubment" for everything... lol... It's nice what they built, but we all know you can't just do things like that.  You can't just build your own bleachers... handicap laws (they ignored).  Did they have a zoning permit?  Did it raise the cost of school's insurance to have a big metal thing that wasn't inspected?

I know, in theory it's nice... but if it collapses in a month and kills ten people because uncle joe didn't use the right kinds of washers and bolts, well, then it'll be "why did that horrible superintendent allow unlicensed, untrained people to build an unsafe object on school property, and why were they allowed to sit in it?

Story seems misleading, doesnt it?  It was all about equality and evil schools hating on boys vs. girls.   Now we see the bleachers we built improperly.  Oh, the reason reason.  I got it.

Obama probably has nightmares of the embarrassment he suffered in his two mound pitches where he was wearing mom jeans and looked like a complete dork.

Where in the story is this raised as a concern?

The only objections given was that it was better than what the girls had and not wheelchair accesible.

Both issues being absolutely ridiculous.

Do us a favor. Stick to what was reported by the posted article. Unless you have more info and if you do, by all means post it with a link.

sorry, but the article was posted by the Blaze.  If you read about it on other sites, you quickly learn why it's being torn down.  Not because of "gender discrimination" and "liberals", but rather because they violated ADA and Title 9.

"There are obvious Title IX implications to this story, as federally funded schools are required to provide equal opportunity for both boys' and girls' sports. The boys' seating is also not handicap accessible, which is a separate violation of government regulations."

It's the law, and they got away with it for 6 years, but it is, in fact, the law.   AND most people are now saying they are only making this big deal about it because... drum roll please... donations are gonna roll in to pay for the girls new bleachers.  Turns out, 6 years ago, they used a nice media story to drum up the $ for the first set of bleachers ;)

very clever, my dear!
