Williams Strength makes most of the EliteFTS stuff, try to buy direct to save money. They're in the Carolinas.

http://www.totalstrengthandspeed.com/ .

Sorinex is another biggie from that area - www.sorinex.com .

I'd go Hammer Strength for the other odds ands ends.

-----------------

York or Ivanko for plates. For liability purposes, I'd buy them with some sort of hand holds.

Texas Power Bar or Cap OB - 86 for the bars. The Cap is a cheap but decent bar. The Texas is more or less the standard in powerlifting gyms.

I have a friend who owns a gym and totally built it from used equipment.  The Hammer he has came from another gym I went to and is still flawless after well over a decade.  Hammer plate loaded and select are all top notch.

Fat housewives and old people

Mainstream gym

So....competing everyday with the gym down the street for the $9 per month membership? 24hr Fitness has filed BK 3 times in the last 5 years and are building less and less gyms each year. They are staying afloat with the classes, personal training. They have a very low profit margin, take a loss each year and overhead on a 30,000sqft building is stupid. Look around you. You have smaller gyms in the 6000sqft range popping up everywhere that make more per sqft than the commercial gyms.

Why the hell set up a box gym. Get some real equipment in there, attract people who will actually use it and appreciate it. This isn't a huge money making investment. If your not doing daycare and zoomba classes your not going to compete with the franchise gyms. Bring in some real trainers, host seminars...put some oly equipment and get the crossfitters, some strongman stuff..tires...decent competition benches. You don't have the room for a small gym that's just the same as a anytime fitness or 24hr etc.

New is always best in cardio if u can afford. The weight stack equip can be used if in good shape.

Have you looked into getting equipment from gyms that closed down? Not sure about treadmills but some machines might only need reupholstering and some basic maintenance, others like dumbbells and plates should be good.

T-

The location and the economic make up of the area is paramount.

Best equipment in the world WITHOUT PAYING MEMBERS is bad news.

Is the area in NEED of a gym? Why will they come to YOUR gym?

Next you will need a sales and marketing freak who is also fit and does NOT HAVE A DRUG PROBLEM.

Bodymasters and Precour for weight stack equip and Hammer Strength for plate loaded.

I believe Bodymasters went out of business.

BTW we pay about 1k every 2 months for maintenance of equipment, and most of that goes to keeping Matrix and Precor treadmills trouble free.

If  you own a building and have to ask Getbiggers about what to do you are completely lost.

Advertise that you have premises suitable for a gymnasium and see if anyone is interested. Then you do a fitout and charge more for rent and can claim that on your tax and so can the lessee. Let the lessee apply to council and equip the gym. People who open gyms are very fussy so equipping one and then trying to sell it is not a good business practice.

There are equipment companies that will supply all the equipment you need for a rental of so much a month. I think plans start at around $250,000 and include cardio, machines and free weights.

Sun tan beds are risky because here in Australia the government has legislated against them. All you need is one person to sue you if they got cancer from them. The litigation isn't worth installing them.

Hire someone who knows the gym business and rely on that person to make decisions.

The last thing most people do should be the first. Do a study to find out what kind of fitness facility is wanted in that community. Then supply them with that.

I was under the impression  that committing yourself to a large initial cash outlay that you constantly have to add new members to cover was an outdated, old business model.

For instance, the gym I used to go to here was similar to Coach's in setup, and the owner knew he only needed a relatively small amount of members to cover his overhead, and made all his money on PT.

Buying a bunch of machines for housewives to sit on will fail, because unless you have a ridiculous amount of population to cycle through, these types are hardly mainstays.

What kind of equipment do you like?

Boxes, ropes, squat stations, benches, chains, dumbbells, olympic bumper plates, medicine balls, sleds, suspension trainers, a few spin bikes and a turf floor.

For most of that, I don't care about brand and could make some of it, but I'd spend the most money on this kind of stuff:

Also, keep in mind I don't know shit and am talking out of my ass probably, but that's my opinion on what I've seen/preferred.
