Ex-hero officer faces trial in gunpoint rapes case
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A former police officer who was shot in the face and later sat next to the first lady while being honored at a presidential address is too dangerous to leave prison to await a rape trial, a judge said Tuesday.

Richard DeCoatsworth is charged with sexually assaulting two prostitutes at gunpoint last year and forcing them to take drugs. He withdrew a plea to reduced charges Tuesday, telling the judge he wants to clear his name.
"I'd like an opportunity to prove my innocence," DeCoatsworth said in court. "If I were a guilty man, the offer the commonwealth presented would be a good one."
DeCoatsworth, 28, has experienced a long slide since he was shot pursuing a suspect in 2007. A defense lawyer said he became addicted to painkillers after the shooting and resulting surgeries.
"The shot to the face changed his life forever. It really altered him," lawyer A. Charles Peruto said. "He had his face reconstructed. The pain has been immeasurable."
DeCoatsworth, who has a short beard covering much of the scarring below his mouth, faces decades in prison if convicted of the most serious charges at trial in November. He was likely to leave prison with time served, about 10 months, had he gone through with the plea.
DeCoatsworth sat next to first lady Michelle Obama at the State of the Union address in 2009, when he was honored for his heroics the day of the shooting.
Common Pleas Judge Charles Erlich denied his request for bail Tuesday, calling him a danger to the community.
"I don't know what caused certain things to happen in Mr. DeCoatsworth's life," said the judge, who noted that drug use and psychological issues were referenced in court files.
The files, including grand jury testimony, allege that DeCoatsworth had threatened people and said he could kill them with "de facto immunity" because of his police connections, the judge said.
Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey has said he may have let DeCoatsworth return too soon after the shooting.
DeCoatsworth, battling addiction, left the police force on disability in 2011, his lawyer said. He had been the subject of at least one civil rights lawsuit, filed by Columbia University hip-hop scholar Marc Lamont Hill over a traffic stop. The suit appears to have been settled, according to federal court records.

Private Marcelino Serna (April 26, 1896 – February 29, 1992) was an undocumented Mexican immigrant who joined the United States Army and became the most decorated soldier from Texas in World War I. Serna was the first Hispanic to be awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
Serna was born in the city of Chihuahua, in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, to a poor family. In 1916, when he was 20 years old, Serna decided to enter the United States, by crossing the Rio Grande and going to El Paso, Texas in search of a job and better way of life. Serna, did not know how to speak English and could only find employment that paid low wages. It wasn't long before he found himself working as a farm hand in a sugar beet field in Denver, Colorado.
The United States declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917. Serna was with a group of men in Denver, when he was picked up by federal officials. He faced the possibility of being deported and before that could happen he volunteered to serve in the Army.
World War I
After his basic training Serna was sent overseas and assigned to Company B, 355th Infantry of the 89th Division. When the Army realized that he was a Mexican National, he was offered a discharge. Serna, however refused and chose to stay with his new friends.
Serna's unit was ordered to begin an advance towards the Meuse River and Argonne Forest in France. When his unit arrived at St. Mihiel, they encountered a German machine gunner who killed 12 soldiers. Serna crawled up to the machine gunner's left flank. Even though his helmet was hit twice with bullets, Serna was able to get close enough to throw four grenades into the nest. Eight Germans surrendered and the rest in the nest were dead.
On September 12, 1918, Serna's unit was engaged in combat inside the Meuse-Argonne region when he spotted a German sniper and wounded him with his Enfield rifle. Serna followed the wounded soldier to a trench. He threw three grenades into the trench which resulted in the death of 26 enemy soldiers and the capture of 24 prisoners.
Serna was wounded in both of his legs by sniper fire, four days before the Armistice. During his recovery, General John J. Pershing, Commander-in-Chief of the American Expeditionary Forces, pinned on his chest the Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest military decoration of the United States Army to the Medal of Honor. Serna was told by an officer that "Buck Privates" were not eligible for the Medal of Honor, and that he did not know enough English to be promoted. The officer in question was wrong because Private David B. Barkley who also served in the 89th Division, was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions. It so happens that years later it was discovered that Barkley was Hispanic, thus the only Hispanic recipient of the Medal of Honor in World War I. Field Marshal Ferdinand Foch, Supreme Commander of the Allied troops, awarded Serna the French Croix de Guerre for bravery.
