since it is unhealthy to look "inshape" i don't care if he only got in shape once (in your opinion)...
i thought Flex looked amazing when he won the USA... and correct me if i'm wrong but he didn't have inplants or hadn't used synthol at that point... plus his arms hadn't gotten too ridiculous...
bottom line is that the man was a sight to behold & i'm tired of reading on here that this guy sux b/c he has/had high lats who the F cares... which god made the mandate that you have to have low lats... it's largely genetic... Flex looked great at times get over it!

flex was good bc of full muscle bellies (before the synthol) and a very small skeletal fram and small joints. he had great shape and size to his arms, great abs, and some of the best upper back detail ever.
other than that i think he is a bit overated. he showed up for most shows in good shape and with the above mentioned attributes, he won a lot of shows. personally, i like the bigger and freakier guys, but flex did look good. but he did have some flaws, no back or shoulder width, cuts in his lower body, and weak calves.

Guys like Lee Priest, Flex Wheeler, Kevin Levrone, Shawn ray, Victor Martinez, Melvin Anthony....
All these guys have small waists, great abs, broad shoulders and they're huge mass monsters with big guts, they have beautiful structures, full muscle bellies and amazing genetics. They're not huge muscle freaks which scare people in the street

Actually his lats were not high or semi-high at all. He wasn't wide, because he didn't pack on meat. Plus he said reportedly by Jam. Nasser that doing heavy (400 pound) barbell rows hurt.

Very long muscle bellies, with tiny joints and a good structure. Do I need to go any further? Flex major fault is that his frame was too small, for the current standard of pro bodybuilding.

he looked good in many shots, but overall he was overrated i think. his arms overpowereed his body, he was narrow, lacked thickness, and had no calves (which i dont really blame bbers for since some people just cant have them)...his lat spreads were nonexistant, his legs were shredded but not to impressive otherwise...i just prefer the look of a big thick chest and back to big arms only.
the thing that kills him though in my book is the fact that he was built entirely on juice, juiced non stop since he was 18, he didnt like working out and was supposedly lazy/weak in the gym, and he clearly used synthol alot....he didnt deserve the title.

If anybody could confirm that he was weak or lazy in the gym it would be Chris Cormier. He was one of Flex regular workout partners, plus Chris had the tag of being one of the strongest bbers, in terms of pushing exercises.

That's because the judging standards are warped. It's not about having the best body. It's about bsing the biggest and hardest with proportions and symmetry as an afterthought. It's why Dorian won over Flex and Shawn Ray. It's why professional bodybuilding today is horrible and boring.

Notice ever since he retired over a decade ago u never see him wear shorts, even though he's making his comeback, legs are never shown to the schmoe crowd

Flex relied a lot on "illusion". His shoulders were narrow amd his back wasnt thick at all (compared to other guys onstage). Look at how he looked after competing and the oil left his delts. He looked almost hunched over bc his steucture lacked width. He posed to make his physique look wide, but see his back double bi from the side and he looks thin. Not really a knock on him, as bbing is displaying your physiquenthe bes way possible. His arms were great and his muscle bellys held oil better than anybody elses.

Taken me 18yrs to finally see a video of Flex (or even pics other than what was in FLEX mag back then, & i thought those were poor) at the '98 Arnold. At the time, & for years that, ppl said this was the best physique ever to step onstage. ... I think his combination of size and conditioning here is maybe his best. Even better than the 93 Olympia and 93 Arnold. His glutes were striated and dry in 93, but they were "feathered" in 98 along with more size overall.
Here you can see where he lacks the front-to-back thickness other guys have.
I still prefer his look at the 99 Olympia where he was much fuller, but even at the higher bw his back looked "small & thin". ¥hen notn looking art him straight-on. How many times have you seen a guy who's arms made his back look small?
IMO his best showings were:
99 Grand Prix (any show)
99 O
93 O
98 Arnold
93 Arnold
98 Ironman
96 NOC
