Fuck this look promising, I am 5.9 and half and right now 193lb and prob 15-17% BF probably (or maybe just water make me look fatter??) and I got 17.2 inch guns of peace, so I need just 1.3 inch more for guns and add another 32lb muscle to look like Mike. :D

Got a story for ya and I think that I posted it once already. So a buddy of mine went to the Mentzer seminar twice. Once in 94 and 96 if I recall correctly. Not sure which time this was, but he told me that all the guys there were huge. A lot of them were locals who trained in the gym that Mike came to. He told me that they really did train with HIT way which I still kind doubt, but anyway when Mike was done with the seminar there was this other guy who talked about drugs and cycles. I guess Mike for obvious reasons didn't go into that kinda stuff. So basically what this guy recommended I would imagine thru Mike was this. 2 grams a week of your fav kind of test per week, 1500 mgs of and anabolic like EQ and 30 on and 30 off of an oral like for example Anadrol at 8 PER DAY!!!! LOL Every 8 weeks you took a 4 weeks break off the oils. NOw, you think that someone could grow rather well while doing 2 to 3 sets per muscle group doing a cycle like that one? :D

I`m good friends with retired IFBB pro bodybuilder Dave Mastorakis seen below back in the day....Dave is from a small nearby suburb of my home town.

Dave was the youngest IFBB Mr. America contestant in history at age 15.
Mentzer saw this contest and had to meet Dave since he never met another kid with muscles.
Remember,at this point in time,there wasn`t a lot of bodybuilders like there is today............they looked better though! :D
As a kid he met Mike Mentzer when Mike was 16 and corresponded with him for a while via snail mail, then met him and they trained off and on together along with Ray Mentzer for many years.
Dave stopped by my house one day and I asked him a lot of questions.
He told me that while they all trained using high volume,that he and Ray seemed to have stopped making gains but Mike was getting huge.
They inquired and Mike finally admitted after quite some time, that he was juicing.....I`m going way back here obviosly as it was their first experience using gear.
Then all 3 jumped on the gas.
Mike trained hard just like everyone else at the time,using high volume......just like everyone else at the time.
They ate a lot of meat and fruit...heavy on the carbs.

Only after Mike got into Arthur Jones theories,did he start using HIT then later "Heavy Duty',but he built the majority of his size using volume.
Deca and D-Bol along with Test was used basically,but they would use other stuff if they could get their hands on it....just like everybody else.

On the Mentzer bit and their diet, remember that these guys trained insanely long hours, serge nubret did something like 3 hours a pop with huge volumes.....so they would really burn through a lot of carbs consumed, most gym rats train one hour 4/5 times a week.

I found this below very fascinating basically and correct in my view.
Diet has always been as important, if not more, as weight-training for bodybuilders. However, in his book Heavy Duty Nutrition, Mentzer demonstrated that nutrition for athletes did not need to be nearly as extreme as the bodybuilding industry would lead one to believe. His recommended diets were well balanced, and he espoused eating from all four food groups, totaling four servings each of high-quality grains and fruits, and two each of dairy and protein daily, all year-round.
Mentzer believed that carbohydrates should make up the bulk of the caloric intake, 50–60%, rather than protein as others preferred. Mentzer's reasoning was simple: to build 10 pounds of muscle in a year, a total of 6000 extra calories needed to be ingested throughout the year, because one pound of muscle contains 600 calories. That averages 16 extra calories per day, and only four of them needed to be from protein—because muscle is 22% protein, about one quarter.
I always thought myself for the longest time through personal experience "carbs" is what makes muscles grow not just amino acids and protein as much as people wanna believe, my reasoning is that muscles mainly glycogen and water and indirect affects of carbs make you stronger etc.
Always when I eat high carbs my muscles are nice and full and I grow quickly.
Off course the problem is not just about adding muscle but keeping fat away and carbs make me fat easily too especially cos I am carb sentitive so always have to trade size for conditioning or conditioning for size and getting balance right is hard.
Now I am of the opinion that I will just let the drugs to the work, only true way really.
Metformin to counter fat storage, thyroids for fat loss, AA's for size/conditioning...etc.
I don't really want to live beyond 60 and even that is too much for me.

Ok totally agree about the muscle building part but you haven't mentioned anything about the other side of the equation and fat loss.
No question in my mind keeping calories up through high carbs and fat and moderate protein is gonna be best for building muscle but unfortunately it's also gonna make you fat too (at least me anyway)

Well I don't have first hand knowledge of PEDs but adding them into the mix is always going to change things somewhat. Most of the research on human metabolism is done on "natural" subjects - it has becomes more and more unethical to give people steroids etc and then studying how this effects muscle growth/fat loss while manipulating macronutrients/calories.
Speaking in very general terms, steroids will typically allow a user to grow new muscle tissue, at a MUCH faster rate. Because of the effect of androgens on decreasing adipose tissue and the fact that they cause increases in fat free mass, the big benefit of steroids is that they allow the user to get bigger without accumulating large amounts of fat. (A natural trainer will never weigh much over 220 and maintain a single digit body fat percentage.)
But this still only applies up to a point. To grow a serious amount of new muscle tissue, calories still are the limiting factor. I suppose it would be possible to gain only lean, fat free mass on drugs but it would be a very slow process and I don't think somebody can reach a truly impressive size (say over 220 pounds) without putting down thousands of calories daily.
So theoretically, while it is possible to gain muscle and lose fat at the same with PEDs, the muscle gains won't be optimal and neither will the fat loss. It is equivalent to trying to please two masters at once. Logically, it makes sense to follow one goal at a time because ultimately, growing new tissue and breaking down existing tissue (regardless of the type of tissue) are polar opposite physiological processes. One is optimised during a calorie surplus; one during a calorie deficit.
The big benefit of anabolic steroids is that they allow you to gain relatively lean muscle when on a calorie surplus (especially compared to being natural) but perhaps more importantly, they allow you to retain muscle when losing fat. So yes I agree with you, bulking (not getting fat however) and cutting is probably the best way to get big and ripped. After all, its what the best bodybuilders in world have done.

MY 2 cents if you ever been contest shaped and will continue to compete at higher levels then you have to let go of the 'lean'mindset and plan your bulk/contest look/maintence look accordingly.if your done with it all and want to be built for yourself try to stay lean not contest lean that's impossible but 6/8 pct comfortably for most yr a never above 10/12 zone if you want to let go for few months of the yr..the hardest thing to accept if you competed is that its not worth looking that without doing something to show for it and its painful too see pics of yourself looking insane 'peeled'and not being able to stay there due to overeating just a bit sacrifices condition.keep abs all yr if you could and bring it down in warmer months to get that little bit more tightness.there is no offseason normally if you don't compete.

Thanks Halo anyway I am not gonna anymore bulk for now, I am gonna diet hard cos its summer and I don't want to look like shit in July.
But in off season next year I am gonna try and put on like 30-40lb of pure muscle taking shit loads of steroids.

I can't even fucking eat 200g protein (unless its from whey protein drinks) without wanting to through up.
I can eat Nandos 1 x Double Breast Burger, 5-10 Chicken Wings and Half Chicken + like 3 Protein Shakes that's about it.
I think this put me on about 250-300 protein for day I am guessing and rest can come from other things.

Well, firstly just to clear one thing up. "Bulking" is an awful word that creates an image of a bloated sweathog who walks around panting wearing sweatpants all the time. Its not what I mean. I don't really mean bulking I simply mean eating more calories than you burn on a daily (or weekly) basis.
It is possible to gain muscle without getting fat. Now, some fat accumulation is okay and lets be honest, much of what you might think is fat is actually water retention, especially if you're on steroids as well. The simple fact is that much of it comes to down to genetics and response to training, diet and drugs. Some people may need 5000 calories to grow; others may only need 3000. The key is finding your sweet spot: getting away with the least amount of calories needed to grow while minimising fat gain. This can only be discovered through trial and error. It takes time and patience. It depends on your lifestyle, activity levels outside of the gym, training style (e.g. volume, intensity), cardio, food choices, natural frame and structure, metabolism, drug use etc. There are so many variables. Remember, we are taking about physiological processes occurring. Think about it - you're body is literally growing new tissue. Living cells that never existed before. This takes time and it takes energy. It takes amino acids, fatty acids and calories.

Think about how many calories that is?! 2400 calories from protein alone. I know for sure that he always ate his grits and cheese and baked potatoes on top of all that chicken, even pre-contest. I would guess he ate at least 4000 calories a day and this was in the lead up to the Olympia when he was 100% focused on losing fat.
But you're right, protein is of course necessary for new muscle growth. I think protein should be a foundational part of your diet - every meal should be built around a protein source. But lets look at some of the facts:
-1 pound of human skeletal muscle tissue contains roughly 100 grams of protein. That is not much, when you consider some eat 500 grams a day. No way can your body knit together 5 pounds of muscle in 24 hours!
- The process of new tissue growth and protein synthesis requires energy. ATP. Now, you get this ATP from the breakdown of energy molecules (glucose, fatty acids). Your body can get this energy from amino acids too but it is an inefficient process.
-Think about the composition of muscle tissue. It is essentially a collection of myocytes (muscle cells). Every cell is surrounded by a membrane. Cell membranes are composed of lipids. Fatty acids.
-The hormonal system plays a huge role in the formation of new tissue. Regardless of drug use, new muscle tissue won't grow unless testosterone and other hormones are active. And the bodies entire hormonal system is lipid based and requires energy to function optimally.
-Lets not forget about training. Carbs are the bodies preferred energy source for intense activity. You need carbs and/or fats to have any kind of decent training session.

Wow this is pure fucking gold and makes so much sense.
In all honesty where I had the most success previously (bearing in mind I was natty back then) was when I upped both my calorie intake AS WELL AS substantially upping my TDEE and activity levels. That combination seems to work well for me.
Example of this would be get up in the morning and go run hard for hour or so. Walk around a bunch or as much as I can during the day + weight train for couple hour in the evening while eating say 5000-600 calories a day with 50% carbs, 30% protein, 20% fats.
This combo makes me end up fuller and looking leaner.

I believe Mike Mentzer had the baddest, most manly build to ever in his day. He was thick but still ripped and just looked like a powerful man all around. One of the best physiques ever in my opinion!

Mentzer's build was superb and his method of training makes sense, but will it make muscle? I believe so. But one has to take into account that Mentzer (by his own admission) took drugs to achieve his physique.
I have begun to train according to the way Mentzer advocated in his final book which I recently bought. I am in the second week of an experiment of sorts in physical culture and that being can I maintain my current physique or even experience increases in muscular size and strength following Mentzer's protocol.
If it works, then it works for me but may not for others. If not, that doesn't mean it won't work for someone else.

Mentzer could calculate how many grams of protein are in a pound of muscle but you
can't use that number to calculate how many extra grams of dietary protein you need to build
an additional pound of muscle. It's a bit more complex than that.
I think Mentzer's diet was probably quite suboptimal. When I look at for example the 80 Olympia pics he looks pretty small... my hunch is that he could have been bigger/better if not for the extremely low calorie, low protein diet eating "whatever" combined with amphetamines.

It's been reported that Casey viator said mentzer took over two grams of deca a week, a lot of primo as we'll, and dbol.
Believable to me.
Exactly what I heard from a reliable source for what it's worth. The kind of size that these guys had back then from using only anabolics would require a decently high dose regardless. To a degree size is relative to the dose you take. 100 mg Dbol daily was common btw.

Although Mentzer took some liberties with his reasoning, this idea is generally correct and is something that the majority of people who train for muscle growth don't realise:
Calories are the most important dietary factor in growing new muscle tissue, not protein. The total amount of protein needed to build a pound of new muscle tissue is FAR LESS than people believe. However it takes several thousand SURPLUS calories to fuel the metabolic processes involved in the formation of new skeletal muscle.
What typically happens with most bodybuilders is they dump excess protein into the system (e.g. several hundred grams per day) and eat too few carbs and especially too few fats. The body converts this excess protein into glucose and essentially uses it for energy. The problem with this approach is that this is an extremely inefficient way for the body to create energy. Carbs and fats are much better and more accessible forms of energy.
The most logical and efficient approach is to consume protein carbs AND fat. Unfortunately people are either high fat/zero carb or high carb/zero fat, when really moderate amounts of the two nutrients, along with protein, is the best way for lean muscle growth.
Gonna disagree on this. Protein is the most important factor in muscle growth regardless of what amount is needed to build new muscle which as you say is not as much as people think. Calories are needed to sustain the overall bodily functions that happen on a daily basis. When dieting for a show with zero carbs your body will convert some protein into the small amount of glucose that is needed for brain function and the rest of the energy will come from stored fat which is why the body stores it in the first place. It's very simple, supply your body with the necessary amount of protein say 1 gram per pound and the rest can come from fat. That in combination with a calorie deficit will equal fat loss.

Correct, but there's a big but. Traditional as in they act conservative in public...despite turning up to a date wearing the shortest and tightest mini skirt ever. You have to be careful with sexting, had a girl snap at me big time over a sexual comment yet two nights before I was going balls deep in her butt-hole....gaping it like the Panama canal.
So all in all keep it lady like until it's bedroom time (very open minded in bed) hit it hard but don't talk about it.
I agree .. it's quite common in eastern europe .. sexting dirty can offend some right after dirty sex the previous time.. it's "demeaning" to them .. weird ..

Mentzer didnt eat "whatever". He liked food, but due to a very slow metabolism, had to diet very hard to get ripped. He attributed it to bulking up too much in his teens- at 17 hit 250 lbs, able to squat 500 and bench 450. Even when he was just training people, He was eating fairly basically, when I was around him, one lunch was turkey sub- no cheese, not chips. Dinner was Chinese delivery or such. Fairly low fat, medium protein. I also heard he could devour a 7 lb lobster. Missed that one, dammit!
He would typically eat his carbs early, train, and the rest of the day was chicken,, turkey, fruit.

When he was making his recovery from mental illness and his speed addiction he began coming up with new training philosophies. The routines he now endorsed looked nothing like how he trained at his peak. If you want to know how he trained I could fill you in but it's to much to write now.
It's interesting how the majority of personal trainers belief in short circuit training. Train a client in 20 minutes and see them 4 days later. I have yet to see a volume personal trainer.

What is you say has a great deal of validity to it. Mentzer"s best results on HIT were done in the late '70s on a four day a week training schedule. I have tried that in the '70s and again somewhat recently but it has proven too much for me personally. I have begun training as he advocated in his final book, in my case every 72 to 96 hours and I will have to give it a fair test to see how it works for me.
His philosophy regarding lifting is sound, especially so if you are natural and if you are on AAS it probably would work even better.

What Mike did for many of us is give us the hope of a decent physique as well as a real life outside the gym. From the mid '70s on I trained (sometimes) twice a day, six days a week. That's not only a lot, but too much. I woke up one day and realized that my dream of being a Mr. America was ridiculous and costly to my own success. I decided it would be better to pursue a life than a dream represented by a plastic trophy.
Maybe it's true that I didn't have what it takes, but it's even more appropriate to say that lifting took from me more than it gave and all because of the time involved. It's not that volume is "bad" and HIT "good" or that one or the other is right or wrong, but instead what is true for each person. I will say it's difficult not to train on "off" days but I truly want to give this method a chance and so am sticking to the schedule as outlined.
Now, more than ever, I prefer to have a life and the time needed to actually live (and enjoy) it.

I trained with Mentzer methods for decades. Mainly variations of how Mike actually trained at his peak. He won the Weider version of the Mr.America using a whole body routine. He used a mixture of Nautilus and free weights. Roughly 5 sets per bodypart. Some pre exhaustion techniques. He eventually when to a split because he said training the whole body in one shot was too hard.
From there he went to working out 4 days a week training body parts twice a week. The split was legs, chest and triceps on one day. The next was back, delt and biceps. He used from 3 to 6 sets per body part. Something like triceps after warm up could be 2 sets of weighted dips and then 2 sets of pushdowns. Generally it was Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday he alternated the split. He would be the first to say nothing was written in stone regarding workout days so if he needed an extra day off he would take it.
At the end of his competition days he did his take on Mr. Florida Frank Calta's rotation for recuperation method. On Monday he would do legs, chest and tricep. On Wednesday it was back, delts and biceps. On Friday he was back to legs, chest and tricep with weekends off. The next week he would reverse the order starting Monday with back, delts and biceps. So body parts either got one direct day a week or two depending on the rotation.
I used his rotation method during my early 20's. The low sets, generally two work sets of an exercise and 3 to 6 sets a body part training to failure was really hard work. I made really good gains in strength and build. I was always the Mentzer follower at the gym while everyone else used volume.
