Title: What jobs can you work at night?
Post by: Danimal77 on April 30, 2014, 05:35:22 PM
Recently went back to school and need to work at the same time. I HATE morning more than anything. Serious question. Throw out some ideas of jobs I could apply to where I can start in the early afternoon (1-3pm) and work until (9pm-midnight). Preferably jobs above minimum wage.

Some fast fod places open late, til 5am etc so food delivery is a choice. I'd imagine drunken people tip better ( I do) and you don;t have the same bullshit to deal with as security. I did bouncing when I was 19, horrible work. Great pay back then (2003) and unlimited free food, but when you see the shit you deal with nightly it gets tiring. Petrol stations, 24hr supermarkets ans taxi driving spring to mind. Get used to dealing with hammered people giving you abuse either way. Or sell drugs,

UPS truck loader. They use to hire college kids for about 4 hours a day and paid well. Just it was non stop loading for the 4 hours. Guys were leaving that job drained. I don't know if they do the same now.

I can't think many better night jobs for a student than security.

Try to find a place that's real slow where you can sit on your ass and study all night.

There's a guy on YouTube with a small following named AaronClarey who talks about writing several books while working the night shift as security.

Security and Doorman.

The thing with security (which I have considered) is that it's around an 80 hour course (that is mandatory) in order to get licensed.

Back in school (for a career), so I'm kind of ruling out becoming a cop or a fireman.

To get a job as a bouncer, do you need to be connected? I mean, do you just walk up to the manager of the bar/club and say you're looking for a job? Isn't it all about who you know?

hang out for a few days.  look big.  make nice with staff but don't hit on anyone.  Mention you're looking for work doing that, mention your training and experience (even if you have to make it up).  Offer to fill in or whatever.  Do this at a few clubs.  Something will turn up.

OR - find a local band.  Offer to set up their gear, carry in speakers, run cables, etc.  There are countless nights when I'm playing a double and I'd kill for a dude to show up for 30 minutes and break down cables and load the truck in 20 minutes, while I caught a bite and changed, before heading to the next gig.  Or at 2am, I'd love to put down guitar and go home, but I have to stay and break down a PA system, etc.

bouncer... roadie... learn to run sound and set up a QSC pa system with a mackie board, with a few lights.  No training, you can set up at 9pm, leave for a bit, return for breakdown, and make a cool 50 a night.  Do this for 2-3 bands, and you have a decent cash job with minimal training.

I live in a major city with a ton of clubs and bars. The dudes I see standing outside are all like 6'2" + and jacked as hell. They all look like they could kick some serious ass (Terminator era Arnold). I'm 5'10" and 220 pounds and have some size, but I'm now in my 30's and don't have ANY connections anymore in that world. Thanks for the advice bro.

its more of a time thing.  I play a 4 hour show.  Hungry, thirsty, need to change before the next gig, usually 1 hours later.

Gotta pick up 4 powered speakers, wheel up 12 XLR cables, a light strip, a few pedals and power, ton of power cables, box up the board... then there's the guitars, stands, mics...

A fresh pair of hands can pack up a PA in 10 or 15 minutes, get the truck loaded.  All while I'm going for the check, getting sandwich to go, washing/changing in bathroom.

15 minutes after my final chord, I'm fresh and clean, paid, belly full, on way to next show.  Worth it to pay a buddy to do it, so I can do another gig.  Worth it to the buddy, who would live close and probably be hanging out anyway

learn to play bass guitar lol.... easiest instrument.  You can get good enough to gig in a month if you pay attention and work your tail off.  They're always in demand and if you're average at first, it's okay.  I see some of the oldest, fattest, ugliest, non-skilled dudes, working as much as they want... pay should be 150 a man plus tips minimum for a 3-4 hour gig, not a bad part-time job.  Once you get good, go corporate with the high end stuff :)

It's like working out with just machines at the gym.

Bad for the lower back. You gotta be moving stuff around to keep it strong and up to par.

I used to work as a painter (of all jobs) at night when I was going through university. Fucking dirty job and you work with the down and outs of humanity. Paid well and you pick it up in 30sec. Much better than door work where you work with scum and fuck ups. I never had to take a loan and lived very comfortably as a student. You even get used to the lack of sleep.

This seems exploitative. don't the venues have professional stage hands?

not usually, at least in SW Florida.   Bands set up things themselves and run their own sound.   Band makes $600... they'll often pay a dude 40 or 50 and save them the time of setup.  Most are lazy and would prefer to just walk in and play, or get drunk while they play, and hook up right after, etc.  For the amount of time involved, if you live close and would be hanging out at these clubs anyway, if you are creative enough to set up 2-4 clubs a night, you can make decent $ and have a fun night doing it.

VERY top bars will have a sound or light man, but most bands run their own sound from the stage and have the auto lights that smell the kick drum and move in sequence with the song.

If you invest in a PA system (2 k12s, 2-3 K8s, a sub), you can run your own PA system and charge bands 150 or 200 a night.  A few guys do that.  I might do it when I get old, once I'm too fat and bald to play lol.  They set up, they read or work on computer or drink and relax for a few hours on their ass, and they really control their own environment.   I did it one night, it was fun but preferred the stage to it.

Repo man, tow truck driver, Home Depot. 1st 2 pay better and would be perfect for those hours to bridge to a career. Bouncing doesn't really pay well (great if your goal is to get laid a lot) I'd say avg $100 for 3 hours unless your one of the main guys and some states you need a card not like the old days

when in doubt, grocery stocker by night is always a possibility.   walmart, winn dixie, etc.  often you'll start "when you can get there" and work as long as you can.   I did that a lot during college.

Come out west to Alberta, Canada.  Find a Canadian girl to marry, then get a job in the oil patch, where even the lowest paid job there is is about $30/hour.   If you're a skilled tradesman such as a welder, or pipe fitter, or electrician, then you can make a six-figure salary pretty much from the start.   Lots of money out here to be made if you're willing to work hard and keep your nose clean.
