I'd say Dorian, especially when you consider he was way bigger than Mentzer et al.

Yates big time. Hamdullah is easily the most shredded and separated bodybuilder ever but not as grainy as Dorian.

Goosebumps and/or skin disease can help foster a grainy appearance.

Well, let's put it this way: The term "grainy" had never really been used or spoken of prior to Dorian Yates.

He brought size and conditioning to a level that nobody had really seen before. He also brought another "look" that had never been seen before.

When the decision was made to go with Dorian over Haney, it was this "look" that changed the course of bodybuilding forever... or at least until now.

I don't know about tomorrow.

With the lineup this year, I wouldn't be surprised if they crowned a Physique competitor and called it good ~

Dexter Jackson

I agree I saw Dexter when he beat Cuttler in 2008 and he looked insane! He added about 10 pounds of solid lean mass that year and he was shredded wheat! Dexter needed a body band-aid -fool was cutt all over!

There is a difference between shredded and grainy...

To be both shredded AND grainy is sick-looking.

Never really heard any judges refer to Dexter as being "grainy"

Am I the only one on this page or what?

There needs to be a better mix of older bodybuilders on this board who have actually followed the sport and stuck with their ... workouts

Grainy is a different quality from being ripped in my opinion. You can be ripped and have soft looking muscles. Grainy is density. I feel it comes from heavy lifting. Yates is the king of that. Maybe this little guy too. His name is Pierre Van Den Steen.

I don't like the so called grainy look. I like the young ripped look.

Arnold wasn't grainy, he had great skin and texture anyway

Agree grainy is different than ripped. You can be grainy without being ripped. Or ripped and not grainy.

Phil Heath was particularly grainy in 2013.

We haven't seen that level of shreddedness since Dorian.   He has possibly surpassed Yates also.
