I agree about full metal jacket. The best part of the movie is boot camp. You have to love animal mother though. If I had to die for a word, that word would be poontang.

Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. So many great scenes.
Ace Ventura: [to Ouda] What does "equinsu ocha" mean?
Ouda: "White devil".
Ace Ventura: Well, tell him I'm not.
Ouda: I only met you. How do I know?

No matter what else is going on? Huh? So if your house if on fire, and Shawshank Redemption is playing on TV, you will stop in your tracks and watch the movie as opposed to getting your ass out of the burning house? Awesome!!

Excellent hyperbolic point! If my house was on fire, I would only watch until the first commercial.
-
every list has just pretty much all the other flicks I forgot to mention. If I ever want to watch a good movie I just go back on here an I will find plenty! 8)

If I have to pick one of the top of my head..
I guess if The Rock was on I'd log out from getbigdrop my evening plans instantly.
Also Terminator 2. If I saw the opening scene I'd have to watch the motorcycles bulkers take a beating first, and then I'd just have to see John getting chased on his dirtbike... and then I'd have to stick around for Sarahs epic breakout from the psyche ward.... before I know it, I'm in tears at the end when the final bodybuilder thumbs up is given from beneath the liquid steel.

Damn, man.
I'm impressed, Halo! :) Those are all good choices. I don't see many people who have even heard of Barry Lyndon.
I do think Full Metal Jacket is a bit overrated, though. It's really two movies: the Good Bootcamp Movie, and the rather lame Vietnam "obviously filmed on Pinewood Studios" Movie.
But Kubrick is still the man. And Sorcese :) Goodfellas IS good any day of the week, even if I have it memorized pretty much line for line.
A few other rare, forgotten or just notable goodies:
*A Simple Plan
*Frailty
*No Country For Old Men JUST for how creepy nuts Anton is
*The Wild Bunch
*Extreme Prejudice
*Southern Comfort
Oh, and Body Heat is largely forgotten these days. Kat Turner was HOT in that. Mein Gott, she was fucking hot.

Yeah, I was surprised by halo's choices as well. Big Kubrick fan, it seems. Even better, though, if he'd added The Killing to his list.

Any 1950`s Sci-Fi flick (just because they had a corny charm)

I know everyone seems to hate the second half of Full Metal Jacket, but I still think the Nam stuff was better than Platoon, which was out around the same time. Neither can touch Apocalypse Now, though. Best war movie ever, all things considered.
Also, Paths of Glory, halo. Another Kubrick gem you'd probably enjoy.

Saw it yesterday, probably Cagney's best. Though Angels with Dirty Faces is a pretty close second.

everything else was long drawn out shit

Dawn of the Dead
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Blues Brothers

I agree on all counts brother.....actually I like the second part of FMJ better than the boot camp part, though the boot camp stuff is priceless.

Yeah I watched it too,now I might have to watch Angels With Dirty Faces tonight since you put it into my head!! :D
If you get a chance, check out "Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye" with Cagney............it came out a year later than White Heat and he is a ruthless cold blooded mofo in the movie, possibly even worse than Cody Jarret.
-
We musn`t forget the original Evil Dead and Evil Dead II........fuck the remake,it sucked ass.
-

goodfellas
the big lebowski
-
Hercules in New York. ;D
-
Yeah, "Whaddaya hear, whaddaya say?"

Another famous line by those guys,I think from "Underneath The Brooklyn Bridge" was when they cut a kids cheek with a knife marking him as a rat............."let`s give him the mark of the squealer'. :D
-
:D

Dead End Kids? Never heard of that one, Wes, but classic gangster lines are all priceless. Even the ones that sound corny in hindsight.
-
I saw The Wolf of Wall Street a few weeks back and thought it was average.
Over long and over stylised. I didn't know much about it prior to watching it and was expecting it to be similar to the brilliant Wall Street (with Michael Douglas) but instead it was more like a teenage boy's fantasy full of obnoxious characters that got tiresome after half an hour.
Agree with Halo in regards to comic book movies too. Waaaaayyyy to many being made in recent years. Don't understand how anyone over the age of 12 can get excited by them considering that they also re-boot them every 2-5 years. :-\
-
Got `em all too my brother......except Ragtime and Shake Hands.....good flicks though.
Angels also has The Dead End Kids! ;)
'Hello, Fadda.' Those guys were still the DEKs when they were of retirement age. ;D

I'm going to add the following to my list:
The Shining
The Big Lebowski
Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid
-
This list is so long for me. I really would like to share but it's just... too long.
I've sold over 3000 movies over the last 3 years and what I have left are movies that I will NEVER part with.
Just to name a few: The Clint Eastwood "Dirty Harry" series or even something like "Illegal Tender" with Wanda de Jesus (and BTW, she is one "built" hardcore woman also in a few cool Clint Eastwood movies.
I will watch a choice number of Fast and Furious movies, "Tokyo drift" being one of my favorites, probably just because of "Neela" ~ mmmmmmm... so gorgeous.
"Winters Bone" (don't get excited, it's not what you think homos) This is a damn good fuckin' movie. I have watched it at least 50 times.
"Oh brother where are thou" ~ very strange sense of humor. Most people I know can't relate, but if you are one of the few who can, you will have all the one-liners memorized by the third watch.
"True Romance" ~ the scene between Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper is still unrivaled to this day.
"Gran Torino" ~ Clint Eastwood. Great Story, period.
"Missing" with Tommy Lee Jones (and trust me when I say: I am not a TLJ fan!!!)
Any Charles Bronson movies except for the last few he made before he passed. "Hard Times" in B & W is a classic. "Murphy's Law" is impossible to find.
The LAST "Rambo"
Anything by Quentin Tarantino, especially the Grindhouse duo ~
That is all... for now. :P
-
Couple more for me:
- Gross Pointe Blank
- Parenthood (now that I am a parent, it makes so much more sense)
-
RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART 2. i always seem to catch it on itv2 and will usually watch it from whatever point in the film it happens to be at.
-
jason and the argonauts.
-

Anyone remember a Jason & the Argonauts type movie, maybe from 60s or 70s where someone had to do battle in an arena with a giant invisible monster? The hero could only see impressions in the dirt where the monster walked. It may even be Jason/Argonauts but I believe it was that type genre movie.
-

Yeah, the Sinbad movies were great too.
I actually much prefer the stop-motion effects to CGI (which is usually just plain awful).
Far more effort and creativity involved.

A variety of fantastic creatures are on hand, and while the concepts are superb, the poorly-built props render all of the wireframe supports and hastily-sewn seams visible on film. As a result, the best monster in the film is invisible. While captive, Sindbad is forced to do battle with a fearsome creature as a crowd looks on the creature leaves giant footprints as it stalks Sindbad within an arena.

No Country for Old Men = awesome
In 'No Country For Old Men' there is something that stands out audio-wise amongst practically all other movies.
Can anyone say what it is without re-watching it?

Wow. It would be standing room only at the San Diego Comic Con!

No score or soundtrack?
Yes. I haven't seen it a few years but when I watched it for the first time on DVD I rewatched it in its entirety just to see if I was right in thinking it didn't have any music.
The only thing I remember was a light, building-intensity droning sound when Tommy Lee Jones' character visits the motel at night to inspect the Llewelyn crime scene.
They could have purchased the "music" for the entire movie for $3 off of any royalty free music site...unless there are period ambient radio music sounds somewhere in the movie that they had to buy the rights to.

Interesting. I swear I just guessed, from memory, but I did look it up after. Three scenes had the faintest music is all, one of which you mentioned.

One movie with a fantastic soundtrack that was like an opera musically, with almost every character having their recurring theme music, was Leone's "Once upon a time in the West"...BUT I remember the opening with the 3 hired guns waiting for Bronson had no music for around 10 minutes until Bronson's harmonica broke the musical silence. For 10 minutes, other than sparse talking, they had telegraph machine, creaking windmill, buzzing fly....as a kind of background 'music'.

a masterpiece. i really need to get this on blu.
i've been trying not to watch it until i do, but a few weeks back i cracked and threw the dvd on. i was worried the film might not hold up compared to my first viewing. i needn't have. it was even more better than i remembered it being.
another i'm holding out from watching until i eventually upgrade is THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD. man, i can't wait to see that in 1080p :P

Has to be one of this century's finest films. Second best western ever, only because nothing will ever top Unforgiven for me.

I had to rewatch watch a few clips but Anderson definitely punctuates dramatic scenes with the absence of music in that movie.
In Boogie Nights he did just the opposite in the dramatic scene where Jesse's Girl is blaring, the camera locks on Walhberg while he seemingly freezes while getting the courage to leave... as the music amplifies it's all you can hear. It's almost like he used music as a type of silence to block out everything that is going on except Wahlbergs internal thoughts. That several second shot could have been switched with complete silence and had a similar effect.

That was actually on cable yesterday, excellent film. I guess I was specifically thinking about Blood, and maybe Punch Drunk Love. I remember Magnolia has that Aimee Mann song during the montage.

anything that gueillermo del toro does is good I find. Pan's labyrinth is awesome too.
the wild hunt, the man from nowhere and I saw the devil are awesome too. South Korea has some really good movies, like Oldboy etc but I saw the devil has to be the best. The twists are awesome.

Jaws is on. I've seen it dozens of times over the years, more than any other film. Know every line by heart, no reason at all to sit through it again. But guess what?
Sorry, Groink.

Same here. I saw Jaws in early July 1975 at the Blaker Theater in Wildwood NJ. Wildwood is an island town too. Even though I was only 9 years old, I vividly remember how packed the beaches were and NO ONE was going in the water... and the weather that summer was very hot and humid. What fun time to be a kid.
Very interesting retrospect here:

My problem is I'm never flipping through the channels. I know what I want to watch because all my shows are DVRd.
It's probably for the better.

First Photo Of Tom Hardy As Both Ron And Reggie Kray
Apparently, anything Gary and Martin Kemp can do, Tom Hardy can do one better. And no, we don’t mean belting out a rendition of Gold. Hardy has taken on the task of playing not one but two Kray brothers in the new film Legend, which charts an incident in their nefarious rise to power. It’s now shooting and the first picture of Hardy has been revealed.
LA Confidential’s Brian Helgeland is once more in a historical criminal arena, adapting John Pearson’s book The Progression Of Violence. Legend dips into the dark underbelly of the swinging ‘60s, when sharp-suited gangsters warred for turf and control, and innocent people were caught in the middle of the conflict, even though criminals like Ron and Reggie Kray liked to claim they only went after the competition.
Emily Browning, David Thewlis, Christoph Eccleston, Taron Egerton, Tara Fitzgerald and Chazz Palminteri fill out the rest of the main cast for the film, which is rolling the cameras in London now after a successful trip to rustle up sales in Cannes. There’s no sign of a release date yet, but we’d expect Legend to arrive either later this year or mid 2015.

Not a bad list. Kilmer is not dead yet, he is working again:
The Birthday Cake: Val Kilmer Stars In Exclusive Gangster Movie Clip
In mobster movies, family is everything – whether it’s blood relations or gangster relations, it’s both the thing that could keep you well-protected, or the thing that could get you unceremoniously whacked. In upcoming mob thriller The Birthday Cake, the net seems to be closing in on Gio, attending a get-together for the 10th anniversary of his father’s death and continuing the tradition of bringing along a cake baked by his mother. But, as you’ll see in this exclusive new clip – featuring Shiloh Fernandez as Gio, and also starring Vincent Pastore (aka The Sopranos’ Big Pussy) and the legendary Val Kilmer – it’s far from a warm reception, and there are secrets just waiting to tumble out.
The Birthday Cake is the feature debut of director Jimmy Giannopoulos, and elsewhere among its cast you’ll find Goodfellas and The Sopranos star Lorraine Bracco, You’s Penn Badgley, First Cow’s John Magaro, The OA’s Emory Cohen, William Fichtner, and Luis Guzmán. Oh, and the wan-and-obi Ewan McGregor is in there too.
Grab a slice of The Birthday Cake when it comes to UK cinemas on premium digital on 16 July.
