German Shepherds are great dogs, especially for security.   Too bad their average life span is only 10 years.

Since I'm a shooter and have no need for a large guard dog, I prefer any Terrier breed... they are smart as hell.

Rottweiler (like cars, get a German import if possible)

Our little guy does protection training with Belgian Shepard puppies and those things are sharp dogs.. Not something I'd want as a family dog necessarily.

"The Best" is impossible to answer. If you're a hunter, a German Shepherd is worthless, if you want protection, a Yorkie is worthless, if you live in an apartment, Great Danes suck etc etc.. But on the Belgian verses the German Shepherd, I have had both in law enforcement capacity, several of each breed and I'd pick the Belgian over the Shepherd for function, German over the Belgian for cool factor.

I've owned a multitude of different breeds ... many a mutt saved from 'extinction' at the pound.... and grew to be fond of each of them ... but I gotta admit that "DE|MPSEY the BOXER" was the dumbest critter I've ever met.

The smartest was a Benji type dog who got a few good movie roles ....One early morning  "THUMBER"  came running into the house to inform me that his best friend "HOT PANTS" a miniture black Lab got hit by a car and was close to dieing on the side of the freeway.

I had no idea what he ws trying to tell me but was a bit frantic until I got up and followed him a half mile down the road to see HOT PANTS in pretty bad shape off to the side of the freeway.

But $800 and several days later he came out of the Vet Hospital with something like 80 stitches and a cast on his leg .... but with a wagging tail. Ad Thumper was wagging too and happy to have his buddy back.

TRUE STORY! Dogs are amazing animals!

TRAINER... Siberian Huskies are  ultra-beautiful.

I loved my Siberian Husky. I ended up having to chain her because she wouldn't stop going to the neighbors. She was sad so I gave her to a friend that owns a farm.

I've never had one, but I do agree that the German Shepherd is a great dog. Loyal, intelligent, long-lived, great with kids, trainable. What more can you ask for?

These days, I mostly rescue mixed breeds. They're mutts, just like their owner.

I`ve got an 80 pound Pitbull,who wouldn`t hurt a fly....great watchdog though.

Also got a Red + White Border Collie.....smarter than a whip, and loyal as the day is long.

Then we have my Beagle......dumber than a post, and a bark that makes you wanna` kill her.

That said,if anything happened to them,I`d be devastated.

So true. Grew up with a beagle. Took like 2 hours to go round the block, punctuated by stops to pull up year-old chewing gum from the pavement.

1- cane corso

2- presa canario

3- german shepard (the Belgian's can be a handful.. heard stories from a few buddies, 2 ex MP's and an ex SF fella.. if I was an MP or Cop or something, sure, Belgian would be great, but not for a pet)

4- fila's

5- English bulldog. always loved them.

Depends on climate, what you want the dog for and how much u want to spend. First dog get a mutt, save a life.....I have 3 dogs now. A Berner..good for families...a Sheppard because I'm gone a lot and he protects my wife....and a golden because I'm an American!...Next dog is a either another Sheppard/retired mil dog or a Leonberger.

Photoshopped dog of peace.

Was always a cat person til last year. Had to mind my gf's niece's pomeranian for a few months. Never felt such an attachment to a pet in my life. Dog followed the niece back to Brazil at the end of the summer, have wanted a dog since. Only problem is dogs need company and I can't guarantee that my girlfriend or I will always be there for dog with work etc.

Greyhounds have the highest and cleanest breeding lines of any dog.  Only the top winners are bred and none in the United States are bred out of the Racing Associations in order to keep lines pure.  This also means there is no inbreeding going on whatsoever as everything is documented and the best alleles of the very best genes get passed down, nothing else.   Its near impossible to get a puppy for under 10,000 dollars and you are not allowed to breed them freely either.  So what you get is a highly intelligent racing machine.  They are intelligent to the point of they will consider your needs, but they have a mind of their own and will do what is in their best interest a lot of times first.  They contemplate, how will action X, benefit me, whereas some dogs just act without thinking.  They are big time opportunists.

Not so short nowdays , my Newfounland(you said once the same thing about him) is 10 yo and still going strong, and the Akita can live 14 years(The Akita may be the only breed in the world considered a natural ... Height: 24 to 28 inch.at shoulder; Weight: 65 to 115 pounds; Life Span: 10 to 14 years).Great Dane has a shorter life span I think( 7-10 years).

Rescue dogs would always be my first choice but you asked for breeds so...

our family german shepherd was a fantastic dog. Super intelligent, very protective and a beautiful beautiful animal.

but, the samoyed we had before her was something special. She was damn near human in the way she'd reason things out. The shepherd was very sharp, no doubt, but the Sammy would have run rings around her, mentally. Spooky smart. The coat was a pain in summer though.

I've had a few friends with Akitas and sadly none of them lived past 7. One of them had Lupus (I guess not uncommon). Also, Great Danes ~ 7-8 years old.  ~flower lost her 3 fairly young. Your lucky your Newfie is still going strong since their LE is 9.  You must take very good care of him.  Some people, although very loving, just don't know about good diets, exercise, etc. and feed the basic, cheapest grocery store crap.  Then again, they're usually the same people eating fast food and other processed crap themselves.

We know quite a few Newfies here in Sweden which are past 9 years , the breed has got much healthier nowadays , I know it first hand because this is my third Newfoundland.

Rottweiler (like cars, get a German import if possible)

Our little guy does protection training with Belgian Shepard puppies and those things are sharp dogs.. Not something I'd want as a family dog necessarily.
they are more suited to military/polic use than pets, too much violent energy crammed up in them to live life as house pet

yeah, our trainer is a k9 cop who got his latest puppy off a 80 year old woman in oakland

her kids thought it would be a good idea to give grandma a Belgian shepherd with a hard protection dog temperament , Hebrews of peace.

obviously the dog destroyed her house and barked all the time.. lucky it didn't get euthanized.

Our rottie is just as brave (gunshots / whip don't phase him, he loves bite work & he would tear the arm off of any Obamas Son who broke in our house) but a much better family dog, big baby with his mom and doesn't chew or bark unless someone comes to the door

In Germany Rotties can't legally be bred and sold unless they pass Schutzhund training, which requires an incredible temperament and massive amounts of obedience training.

there is almost no chance than the offspring of sch3 dog are going to be anything less than well adjusted. Like people, dogs temperament , intelligence etc is largely genetic.

Obviously abusing them isn't going to help but Ghetto retards who abuse animals don't buy a $4000 import dog that can do this ..

Yes, two legged or four.  Unless of course, it chooses to be otherwise.  There is a reason that God spelled backwards is "dog".  What a true gift these creatures are to us.  Unconditional love. Unconditional loyalty.  Friendship.  All this and more is contained within their eyes.

If you cannot see that then it is you that are the simple animal you speak of.

I'm not going to fact check this.  I have been around enough greyhounds to know that some are deadrock dumb and the others are assholes.  They were bred to run, not to think, not to accompany man.  And their bus riders are no better.

Did you train him for it yourself? theres a group meets weekends near us and I'm considering taking our boy

protection training seems more practical than shutz (we live 10 minutes from Oakland and he needs to be able to protect my wife) but he's still a baby (8 months) and too young for full on training

working dogs are so awesome

No, we got him that way from a Dobie rescue group.  Shutzhund (at least as taught to our dog) is protection training and Dobies are among the most loyal of dogs.  The training (as are most law enforcement dog training) is done in German.    I highly recommend it, whether done by others or with you in on the training.  The dog will protect your family, believe me.  Ours would search the house on command and hold anyone he found that did not belong there.  Came home once to an unlocked door and released him with the command to search.  He went through the entire house and found no one.  However, after he was done searching he went back into our room and caught and held one of the cats down until we told him to release him.

He liked our cats and the one he caught that time was more a dog than a cat really.  They were great buds.    Good luck with  your dog! Rotties are excellent pets and friends!

Ha ha, good one. Yeah bud, I shopped them, but not even close as to "how' ~ go ahead try your 'sharpness' filters and such. The result will NOT be the same.

Funny thing is, you chose the one dog that was chopped the least. That was a screen-shot... I'll get a real nice one and you tell me what I did...if anything ~

What a waste of time with screenshots of B.S and such. I needed the pic to blend with a whole layout. Layer masks and Sharpness filters? Just ask how it was done if you want to know.

And no, the dog was in fantastic shape, actually a bit underfed and over-trained.

Shoulda chosen the other dogs I posted. That may have been easier.

BEST DOGS were always the ones I had at the moment. (Except for DEMPSeY who was dumb as shit!)

Dogs I've gotten for the kids who became an immediate part of the family. A couple taken from the pound. Photos taken from the net ...

First shot is a replica of HARLEY AND DAVID. Lab pups. Both died within a couple of months of each other about three years later, (Cancer related.)

A very sad experience. They loved diving into the deep end of the pool to retrieve a weighted ball.

Second shot is similar to THUMPER. Smartest critter I ever had. Led me to his buddy (Hot Pants)  who was hit by a car abut a half mile from the house while following the kids to school. That episode was mentioned earlier.

THUMPER would honestly join in during cocktail conversations. He would sit and listen and always respond.

Someone stold him and he became a star .... according to a family legend which I believe is 98% factual.

The 3rd shot is GRIZZLEY (internet photo). Very dumb but very fun. Ask for the morning newspaper and he'd run down the block and return with a stolden one in  his mouth and a wagg'en tail.

Had many more but three's enough for you GetBigger.

Good dogs are great people!

It takes training to run.  Just like the horses.  They both enjoy it.  The "rabbit" is more or less just a target to focus on.  They are more concerned with the marshmallows and whip cream that they get after the race.

Very true, but the true APBT can run like you wouldn't believe. They don't know when to stop. They pretty much will let total exhaustion set in.

So yeah, "athleticism" here is highly subjective. They are extremely anaerobic, yet they learn to push through until they are dealing more with cardio-vascular endurance.

I live across the road from a St Bernard. He'd be about 9 years old and is pretty active. Placid guy and friendly but I wouldn't say he's especially bright. And I've never seen more shit come out of a dog than that one. His owner often complains about how much food he eats and it sure as hell doesn't seem to stay inside him.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes small dogs.  One of my "gifts from Heaven" was a little slip of a thing that I think was the result of the coupling of a toy bulldog with a Chihuahua.  He had a huge chest and little ass with a Chihuahua's head glued on.

If you are looking for a small dog with half a brain, just get a Jack Russell... at least it's still a Terrier ~

I love Dbermans too, had a female called Eva she was soo deceivingly strong, overall beautiful dogs and she was the best guard dog ever. Extremely attentive at night to noises, and unlike German Shepeherds doberman don't bark much unless there's a reason to.

Thanks, very kind of you...its crazy how these lovely animals leave marks on us for the rest of our lives...I do cherish the good memories though, as I was a young teen back then and would spend whole afternoons with her outside in the woods playing, I was always impressed by how fast and strong she was, and even used to spend my pocket money buyng her mince meat and treats.

I'd like to brag about some dogs I've owned or have recently met.

This first one had to have his leg amputated and manages to get along as well as any four legged dog. I have a lot of respect for this dog's owner.

The second dog is the oldest dog I've ever met at 15 years of age. He still enjoys life on a vinyard in Napa Valley  a few miles north of the Sf Bay Area.

This third dog sits outside of a bar in Northern California on a daily basis waiting for his master to take him home. He's always there just watching the people walk by and going in and outside of that neighborhood bar.

This fourth dog claims to be more than half wolf, but it's questionable.

Booty, if you want the flies to stop bothering you, then quit acting like crap.  No more pictures of you naked,  no more of the (supposed) cam sessions and no more sex stories/"interviews" (here or other boards).

Men may have sex with a whore but they don't like everyone to know about it (halo excepted).  Nothing wrong with being beautiful, but the truth of the matter is that only lasts so long and as I'm certain you know, beauty is only skin deep.  Skin wrinkles with age.

A real man, a man worth being with wants the same in a woman.  No one I know of wants to be the caboose in the train of your (or anyone else's) sex life.  People will say the past is in the past but they're lying.  Sloppy seconds is nothing compared to filthy fiftieth.

At your age you should be looking for a man that wants to bring you home to his family, not to a free clinic.

Yeah, I think you're well aware of this but since you're still beautiful and the men you desire are into you because you let them into you, you'll ignore it until its too late and the only man interested in you is the moral equivalent of Kai Greene.

Gross.

No, I have actually seen photos of you, read your own words and heard your recorded voice on other sites.  Don't treat me as you do your little internet worshippers, I am simply trying to help you realize the truth of life, which given your age you should really know by now.

In other words, what I know of you, I know from you.  The dribble you posted above was spewed in the heat of your ignorance.  I suppose I could have sent you a PM, but no...Not I!  I don't desire to be numbered amongst those that have done that.  Anything I have to say to you can be said here for all to read.

Grow up.

And now we return you to our regularly scheduled thread.  I think I'll look into getting a sidecar so I can take our dogs on some rides with me.  Maybe get 'em some "doggles" to wear.

I recall a pm you sent me when I first joined getbig and I guess you didn't get the response you were looking from me because after this you became very judgemental towards choices I have made. So Noooo of course you won't send another pm. I don't regret modeling naked for men's mags. I was in control the whole time and of a mature age. This subject is completely off topic and more important, this has been discussed before. Everyone is free to express him/herself. In case it's not your cup of tea, then simply avoid it. Chadwicked is simply an obsessed troll, there's no reason to justify that.

And I forgot to say 'no offence', because I know you're a good person.

Seems to be a recurring theme around here lately. Extremely boring, redundant and truly... not entertaining.

Oh, let's wait and see what response I get on that one? What was the last one I read? "Knight in shining armor?" ~ wait, is was something "valiant" because I defended a woman. My bad.

Women here have a status quo, no exceptions.

No one "has" a status quo, moron.

Pandering to women gets you nowhere, junior.

I simply mentioned that you like chilidogs and your cuckolded white knight jumped in to defend your "honor."

So, me asking you why the majority of posts are the same worn out shit is "white knighting"??  Where did I defend her honor?  Indulge me.  Still waiting to see where I was dating her and then subsequently was dumped.

Just curious....do you have flash cards with certain phrases on them that you simply cycle through as you post?  Nothing very original coming from you.

I dont think my wife would let me get anything other than a rescue.  Knowing her, we will end up with an old dog on its last leg because she thinks he looks sad.

Ha. Sweet woman you have, Arch.
