Title: Apple buys Beats. The big winner is? The Carlyle Group.
Post by: GRACIE JIU-JITSU on May 09, 2014, 08:52:31 AM

A sale for $3.2 billion would nearly double the value of Dre's holdings, though capital gains taxes could take a bite out of his big payday, likely leaving him with a net worth in the neighborhood of $800 million. It's not quite enough to land on the Forbes 400, but it would easily make him hip-hop's richest man, topping current champion Diddy by $100 million.

Although Dre cofounded Beats, last year the Carlyle Group bought a minority stake in the company for $500 million. According to Fortune's Dan Primack, the leveraged buyout firm will be "the big winner" in the deal:

Or, put another way, Carlyle may be about to triple its money in just eight months. Or, put even another way, Carlyle may book around $1 billion in profit before even celebrating its investment's one-year anniversary. Can't calculate the internal rate of return without specific data points, but safe to say it's massive

I don't care how big the tax hit, I would be happy as fuck to add $800 million to my billions for just using my name on a product.

He sold most of his shares in Beats By Dre a while ago, though. He won't touch $800 mil.

See my rant here in the Dupe thread on this same subject. I fucking prophesied this. I might as well fucking write for Fortune. If I wasnt so busy being resident editor and meathead wrangler here at GetBig, I probably would.

apple's ceo should be fired if this deal goes through.  the phones are worthless.  it's the stream but apple already has that on the books with itunes.  ceo ends up in Egypt on the end of a rope.

Don't rule it out. CEOs walk on very thin ice, people don't realize how easily they can be canned. They have far from total power, and when a deal that's unpopular or economically unsound goes through, that's usually the end.

iTunes sales have dipped. Beats Music is a new "trendy and hot" music service just like iTunes BUT is on the upswing. They are securing the market and taking out a threatening competitor. In addition, Beats is all about a "look". A big flat red cord and giant ear cups with the B on it. Its a trend and a hipster fashion now. It appeals to both urban culture and hipster culture so its a versatile target market. This is Apple's marketing bread and butter - a look, a fashion, a trend. That is as important to their products as the tech itself and always has been a focus. The android OS is way superior to iOS but idiots still want iphone. Now they corner the hottest ear cups to go with their existing devices and lock down more of the music revenue stream. It makes perfect sense if you knew a god damn thing but you clearly dont.

Thanks for weighing in on a billion dollar CEO's business moves from a fucking meathead loser forum full of dipshit WWE fans. Its about a trillion times lower than being an armchair quarterback. Especially when you're ass backwards WRONG from a strategic perspective. Just go fucking shoot yourself but dont do it inside your mom's trailer. You've put her through enough.

No CEO of any major corporation gets fired without a nice golden parachute to ensure a very comfortable landing.

That goes without saying. They call it a golden handshake. ;)

And with their experience they can just get another executive job in another company. It's nice to be on top. But CEOs are always insecure people on the edge of being fired, at least the ones I've seen in interviews or even met (small companies). Owning the business is always the way to go.

golden parachute...golden handshake...one in the same ;)

Golden parachute clauses can be used to define the lucrative benefits that an employee would receive in the event he or she is terminated

A whole lot of CEOs of a certain age who get let go never bother to work again, other than perhaps sitting on a couple of boards. Depends on their industry, actually. That is the reason for getting that clause up front to begin with.

Him and Iovine actually bough back a huge chunk of their shares back recently so he will make a good profit from it

I saw the lyrics for that song and he sounds like a tryhard.
Epic double chin and faking a beard into a jawline.

He is quite the lyricist.  It's ironic how much attention he got from being mentioned in that 2pac verse

Dre got rich by turning rap into 'violence and negativity for profit', but America does not give a damn. As long as you are rich, you are to be worshipped. ::)
