Title: Fat, smooth, watery, dry, conditioned... WHAT DO THESE TERMS MEAN?
Post by: Lobstah on May 21, 2014, 10:47:24 PM
So after my first pro show, a lot of people were like "it looks like you were holding some water,"  which is funny because the whole time I was like " fuck, I didn't realize I was so FAT."
Even my coach was like "you're definitely not fat.  Just watery."
Other bodybuilder friends after seeing the pics were like "yeah,  you could've dropped some more water."

So here we are, you guys. I made it to the pro ranks without ever knowing what "watery" looks like or means.  Maybe it's just that I'm female- I think EVERYTHING smooth is fat.  Unless my hints are swollen or I have  my period, I always feel certain I'm just a fucking lardass.

So can those of you in the know find some pictures of bodybuilders who've been holding water and bodybuilders who've just shown up lacking conditioning and point out the difference?  Or alternately, can someone just describe the difference?  Because I STILL don't know.

 Thanks in advance.

Fat is when there are layers of fat left on the ass for example

Smooth is when you look plump like a big baby, this can be both water, fat and skin texture causing this

Watery is usually when the otherwise detailed body is blurred by a film of water.

Dry is look of no water subcutaneously.

Condition I think is a term for all the factors. If the sub cut water is gone, the muscles are full, veins popping from the right carbup, the fat is gone and the pump is good, people say he has good conditioning.

but how do you know if you're looking at a film of water or a layer of fat?  like how can you tell if someone should be leaner vs drier?

The skin is transparent, fat is not. When you can see the muscle through the skin you have no fat left, however water in the skin dictates the level transparency, the less water the more see through the muscle becomes giving it a grainy hard appearance.

Yes.. Basically you learn to distinguish the certain looks

Water is like a windshield getting more dusty so the car interior gets gradually wiped out

Fat is more like slinging mud on the windshield, the transparency is immediately lost

"Holding water" is a term used by a conditioning coach you are paying instead of telling you that you are still fat.

I don't know, my coach has never hesitated to tell me when I'm fat.
But this isn't about me personally.  this is about bodybuilding.  when the play-by-play says "looks good,  but seems to be holding water in his glutes," I can never see this "water"

It wasnt meant to be about you, I was using the term generally.
Reading it back does look that way, apologies for that.

My point is that people need honest people around them come contest time, not people paid to tell them what they want to hear (again not aimed at you personally)

Robyn,(I hope it`s OK to call you that,if not I`ll delete it and sorry in advance),how long was your prep for the contest?

IMO,and again,no offense meant, you could have used another 3-4 weeks or so,to come in much crisper/sharper/dryer.

Don't listen to Simple Simon babydoll he doesn't know shit.

This is example of holding water NOT fat.

If I wanted to 2 weeks all it takes, I would drop carbs to like 25g a day, eat 600-700 calories a day, drink liter of green tea, drop creatine, take some Alphamine + Up my Arimidex to 1mg a day (which will totally fuck up my sex drive but still) and I would come in chizzled with viens and shit popping everywhere on my arms etc looking like god. :-*

Hope this helps.

I hear ya`,though not being a pro,I`ve never had a contract!   :)

More time,is all you needed.......much better to be contest ready at two weeks out or so,and just maintain condition until show day.

Best of luck in future outings.  ;)

next time

... longer prep

... more var and clen (and possibly nolva and yohimbine) for the entire prep.

if you're paying a coach, and you were told (at the show) you were holding water/smooth/fat/ect... it's his fuck up. he should've been brutally honest with you. sugar-coating things and making you feel better isn't the coaches job. he should've seen what was happening weeks before the show and he should've made adjustments. doesn't matter how many other clients he has in the show or how many other clients he was prepping at the time for other shows, each clients deserves 100% of the coaches attention, whether he believed the client can win the show or not.

But this isn't about me personally.  this is about bodybuilding.  when the play-by-play says "looks good,  but seems to be holding water in his glutes," I can never see this "water"

When the "fat" is completely gone, you will know, your skin will be so thin it will feel dry or satin-like to the touch. The "holding water" look which is typically seen in places like the glutes, lower back, and lower abs is really just a thin layer of fat.  In many instances this thin layer is hard to see under gym lighting, but becomes magnified under bright posing/stage lights. Same way "dark" skin in the gym can look washed out under stage lights.

You need to have the fat "gone" a few days out, then dehydrate enough to really thin the skin, then reload a little with carbs to keep fullness. Understand the nutritional connection between carbs and water.

Do not get sunburned or tan the day prior - this will thick the skin again. It's trail and error to some degree, but that is where the guru is supposed to come in.

I don't think bulking is somehow a retarded notion, bulking seems to be unpopular these days like the latest trend but its something bodybuilders have done for many years successfully, just my personal opinion etc.

I can't personally every lean bulk, it doesn't work for me, I won't put on size like that and my body doesn't respond to eating clean foods.

Also its a good mental break and chance to relax a bit.

I don't believe in dieting or being in shape year round.

I like to enjoy life as well and not always be miserable.
