What would people do without money? Serious.

Is buying things the best we have?

Money is a requirement in specialized societies. It's the only way that I can transfer my capabilities into a convertible form that I can use to "purchase" the fruits of other's capabilities.

I make software, but I don't grow food. I could trade software directly for food, but that would require a complicated exchange. Money, OTOH is a cross-market store of value.

Money only works if people believe in the system. The pieces of paper in my wallet have no intrinsic value. When Germany had hyperinflation it was cheaper to burn Weimarks than to buy firewood.

It is a good system for the purposes that aj outlined, approximating value to exchanges.
