What does getbig think about Macs in general.
Are they the way of the future? Or am I late to this party. I have a laptop, HP Pavillion, with Win 7. I want a desktop and I am considering a iMac.
Gimmick? Or worth the many monies?

Best decision you will ever make.

Even better than switching from 6-8 reps to 12-15?
-
my next trading platform will be a trio of 24in Imac's... till then, I'm cool with windows.
I'm a bit afraid of getting away from excel though. lol

Better.
You will more pussy with a Mac and this is no lie.
-
Macs are great.
Everything seems much more streamlined on Mac.
PCs seem to last longer though.

Can sluts just smell the hipster funk about a man in possession of an apple product?

Like in terms of them breaking down? Or in terms of them being 'cutting edge'?

Let's not get carried away here.

I tried a friend's Mac Pro laptop. Slick machine and screen top notch. However, no thanks to that operating system and anything with an i in front of it. Maybe if you know how to use them but a PC is preferred.
I find the Macs user unfriendly. I built my own PC many months ago and am enjoying it. Still don't have Windows 8.1 but have used it. Microsoft and Apple have no clue about people.

Did you save a great deal of money constructing your own setup, as opposed to buying a proprietary machine?

Hell no! I started out wanting to replace the motherboard. Then I needed a new CPU and cooler. A new graphics card was next and then I thought, what the heck, and upgraded everything including a new case.
Cost over $3000 when I was finished. 48Gb Ram, 1200 watt power unit, coloured fans everywhere, 256 Gb SSD ( I should have bought a 500 Gb one), Hi Fi Sound card, plenty of USB 3 ports, etc. Goes with my 30 inch monitor.
At least I know how to access the files on this computer so installing programs, etc., is straight forward unlike on a Mac.
I solve all of my IT problems by myself.

quite the setup, holy shit.... are you in the business of editing "seedy" films or something? Or just like to Getbig at lightspeed?
-
Like in terms of them breaking down? Or in terms of them being 'cutting edge'?
Breaking down.
Hard drives dying, also power cords seem to burn up a lot.
Mac power cards aren't cheap either.
I'm talking about laptops. Not sure about desktops.
Either way, Mac is very good about fixing their products. You can take them in to any Mac store and they'll try to fix it there or ship it out.
Weighing the pros and cons, I wouldn't want to go pc ever again.
-
I find the Macs user unfriendly.
I find the total opposite to be true.
When I first switched to Mac, a relief washed over me in an awesome wave.
No bloatware, tons of useful software right out of the box. Everything is intuitive and in congruence.

In the same manner that it does, when you, say... get a good table at a restaurant?

I need the Ram for stitching large panoramas. I once did one with 115 photos in 8 rows of a waterfall. I would go to bed and when I woke the stitching would be done.
Now it wouldn't take nearly as long. I can have several applications running at the same time such as Photoshop and Autopano Giga.
Have never edited any videos or movies. The speed of the internet is based on the ISP plan and where I live. Soon to have super high speed internet.

The Mac Monitors are ridiculously nice... Nicer than pretty much anything else.
The Macs are great for Audio / Video and the like... Suck for gaming.
I have a 12 core Mac Pro and a 8 core AMD Gaming rig... They are both great for different things.
What will you be doing with your Mac.
-

A good table and an even better sea urchin ceviche.

Was just typing away and my fingers got carried away... No homo.

Mostly just standard shit. I dont game, My n64 gets more playing time than my playstation. I do some sales online, but that doesnt really require anything too crazy. I do kind of like the idea of everything being streamline...iphone/ipad/imac... then I unlock the final level and can outfit my icar with iapple istickers ietc. ietc.
-
I do not approve VP, not one bit... Owning a Mac is a secret homo signal...

If you don't game, get the Mac.
But make sure you get Mac Monitors as well... You will need them both.
-
Apple make slick products. I have had the first three iPads. Everyone I showed them to wanted one. Fun to use, etc. However, I absolutely detest iTunes and how they almost require you to use it to upload stuff such as music and photos.
Sure, you can get apps to do it wirelessly but it isn't that convenient. You still are limited by what Apple lets you do.
I want a tablet that is larger, has a high resolution screen for showing photos and has USB 3 plugs to upload data. No way I am buying anything Apple again. A real shame.
I want access to programs and the operating system. I want to control how I upload and download things from my tablet. I am sick of the control that Apple imposes.
-
Paying a lot more for less power doesn't really work for me, plus I hate iTunes with a passion so no, don't do it
-
I use them both for work..... this sums up my feelings exactly:
Paying a lot more for less power doesn't really work for me
-
What do you mean "Less Power"?
I mean, they both run the same Intel CPUs... the Macs certainly have some nice functions as well. I had a DIMM failing in one and it had a little red light on the riser card to even tell me which DIMM was bad... That was cool.
But what do you mean "Less Power"... How is the Mac Intel not as powerful as a Windows Intel CPU.
i7 is i7 right?

You are correct... Corrected my comment.

got it!

I'm on my second Macbook. I switched 6 years ago when I decided to stop working on a desktop and moved countries.
There is an initial learning curve (like everything).
Overall I'm quite happy with the Mac's I've had. I had some initial screen problems with my first macbook which took about 3 months to repair - but since then it's still sitting upstairs in my office getting used everyday and working nicely.
I don't think the user experience is all that much better than on a Windows platform. The one complaint I have with Mac's is that they lock you into their products which all have a built in redundancy. I started using their Pages word processing programme with my first machine, (which I really like a lot better than MS Office/Word), but it's not compatible with windows. I had 5 years worth of documents that could only be read on a Mac, which was a big reason I bought another Mac recently.
Then I had to do all sorts of fuckery to get the new machine to read the old documents because I didn't want to upgrade that programme. I probably would have gone back to a Windows desktop had it not been for that issue.
So, happy enough but given a blank slate and knowing what I know now I'd just buy a good quality Windows machine again.

If you are some kind of tech geek that needs "access to the operating system" get a PC
If you are some kind of gaming geek get a PC
If you are constantly tweaking and updating your hard drive, like a 1950s greaser working on a hot rod get a PC
If you want something user friendly, streamlined, intuitive, minimalist, that works and works well get MAC.
-
I honestly think some are better off with mac, others with pc.
Usually, you like what you are used to and what is simpler. So depends if what you want to do with it and personal preference.
People often say that they switched to mac and it is better but they are the ones voicing the opinion. If they later change back to PC they won't tell it ;D
Mac owns the hip crowd who likes to flaunt it but PC is a way larger percentage of the users. I think you have a 50 % chance of liking it.
My personal opinion? Mac is a steaming pile of manure in a shiny box and is immensely irritating when you are used to and like all the features of a PC.
-

Actually, I write code for a living and a Mac is a much better platform for that. Since my primary preferred deployment platform is Linux, the Mac just works great with it because at its heart, MacOS is built on a unix kernel.

I code for Windows and also iOS and support many in house developed software projects. If I didn't work with Windows I would never own a windows machine. I hate the OS - I do think Windows 8 is a step in the right direction now though.
-
Dang, Vince is using some serious horsepower to enhance his artful craft.
Do you play any games too?
-
I work with both and have been doing so for a good number of years now.
I prefer to work on the MAC whenever possible.
NEVER had a 'bug' problem and when one of my Macs got old and a bit worn out (mainly worn out keyboard)
I simply took it down to the MAC STORE and the keys were replaced within a matter of minutes (free of charge).
ANd when I thought I had a serious MAC problem, I took it to the MAC Store and a swift click on one of the keys set me up so that my MAC would print whatever I said on my computer screen.
Plus the MAC Store offers free daily classes to learn new Mac stuff like a pro and you can always go inside and get an immediate answer to any question that you may have.
You get a ton of Service when you buy a MAC., but when my window units break down ... I'm in a lot of trouble,
-

this. try returning your shitty acer laptop to future shop and see what happens.
i thought macs were gay for years until i actually used one. i think most people who bash macs have simply never tried them.
-
yeah, i've gotten used to a mac quickly. I use both now. not a bad little system. I'm sure a super fast amazing one would be better, mines a tad slow, but still, it's pretty nice.
-
I only have one Windows machine in the house, and it's my son's gaming computer that he and I built. Just doing the software maintenance on it takes more time than the 3 Macbooks and 4 Ubuntu servers in the house. Hell, if you add the 3 iPhones and 3 iPads to the mix, the one Windows machine is still more of a PITA.
Of course, it doesn't help that my son hasn't learned to be properly skeptical of much of the shit he sees on gaming sites, so I am constantly tracking down malware.
-

My last Mac lasted in a completely usable state for a good 5 and 1/2 years...

I've made massive gainz since switching to mac

theyre great for kids, too. I let mine beat the heck out of the iMac, then use it, and I never worry.

The aluminum cases are quite tough.

but for games go pc lol
@esfitness I have excell on my mac its the exact same as on pc plus i got it for free by torrenting it like the shameless tech thief i am lol

Gayer than taking a computer class, gayer than asking questions about your mac, gayer than having your keys replaced after years of use viewing men in thongs. Gayer than getting "serviced" by the MAC guy...

I think I am going to take this Mac idea for a run. Appreciate all the input.
Back to getbig mode.

ahh... ok. I'm not 'mac savy' at all. lol... I may begin the switch in jan of next year.. maybe Oct of this year when the 5.5in iphone6 comes out, after that possibly a MacBook pro 15in, and down the road a trio of 24in Imac's for day-trading.

Another good point.
Mac is a lesser portion of the market so far fewer viruses are designed to attack Mac op.
Never have to suffer slowdown from adware

this...and for windows,no matter what latest version you get will eventually lag in performance

My first computer was a PC. EVERYBODY told me this was the way to go. What did I know? $1600 in early 2000s, less than six months later I took a hammer to it. Flooded with viruses. Like SoCal with the Mexicans, totally unfixable.
Bought a Mac, haven't had a problem since.
-
Problem is people are comparing a $12-$1500 machine to a $450 one. Thats like comparing a Mercedes S500 to a Toyota Corolla and then asking which one is better.

that's true.
I bought my laptop off an ebay refurbisher. 2-something ghz processor, vid card, brand new windows 7.. $122 with shipping and a nice little laptop bag/carrier. had an issue once (porn sites of course, I think tubegalore.com), did system restore and not a problem. lol.. if it crashes and dies on me, i'll just toss it in the trash and get a new one.... same thing you'd do with a Corolla.

corolla wont do that unless you physically break it. things last forever n never break down, insane mpg, cheap to buy and common so easy to find parts. fucking great car imo

Yes, thats the Point! It will get you from A-B eventually. Go to starbucks and everyone there has a MAC to do what? Look at their FB page? A MAC is better, that is obvious, but if you're some single mom whose kid need to write papers for high school (and you can keep him off porn sites) then a $400 laptop will work just fine.

The window manager disaster is still a problem. Unity, gnome, KDE. They all suck. By all means if you are a shell guy, you'll be happier. I don't even bother to install X on any of my boxes, just ssh from my MacBook.
The windows metaphor in MacOS is vastly better than Linux.
The best thing that Linux has is its update system. Yum or apt are a gajillion times better than either Mac or windows.
-

Never caught Linus' fever although he's a hilarious fellow. It's crazy what an "industry" Linux has become.
-
I don't agree at all, there are a lot of good DE/WMs for Linux. It's just a matter of what you're used to. And at least Linux gives you a choice.

Fair enough. I have suffered through various broken Linux WMs since 1993, when I compiled the 0.92 kernel.

Oh yeah, you do

A computer is a porn delivery device, nothing more. It should be instant-on when you open it (Mac), negotiate with the wifi instantly (Mac), work in any bathroom (Mac), open Browsers instantly (Mac), display porn in true colors (Mac), have realistic sound (Mac) and support "gestures" (get it? Mac).
Any questions?

One App?
Seriously man. I have been using Linux for about 20 years now.
It has made huge strides, but it's still not up there with a Mac in terms of application availability.
Office is better than OpenOffice
Where is your Linux linear video editing?
Your Linux 3D modeling?
There are some great Linux Apps. But compared to the apps available on a Mac?
Stop smoking the crack and be real man.

My Sony Vaio laptop cost me about $1,200. It is 5 years old now and still going strong with very few problems along the way. I'd have to agree that one should compare apples to apples and oranges to oranges or PC's to PC's as the case may be.
-

Sorry man... I did miss it.
My mistake.
You are correct... Gimp works, but compared to PS... it's shit.

I had Mandrake linux on a machine for about 6 months when I was a young teenager... sucked the dick. I havent looked back at nix ever since.

No don't do it bro, you'll shrivel up to nothing.

So?Some companies are still running Xp and nt4, and they have 'service techs' for that too, doesn't mean it's the way to go.The mac is better for video editing fallacy harks from the days on the nineties where macs had superior graphics card support for editing, and were the first to use NLE, both which don't apply anymore.Unless you have a real hankering to use Final Cut Pro, it's far cheaper and easier to use a windows machine, cheaper to build, much greater choice of video editing software. If you have to use Final Cut Pro, then simply make sure the pc you build is hackintosh compatible, and dual boot in to osx.

That cost analysis is also fallacy.
A windows machine spec'd equivalently is not much cheaper and in some cases is more expensive than a Mac.
Macs have a better video package outside of FCP. Adobe Premeire, Avid, and even most capture devices are better under Mac platforms.
That's just the way it is. The pipelines are just better.
And any company running NT4 should fire their entire IT staff.
That's an OS that's almost 20 years old.
