Two thoughts
1. If its private property the owner should be able to do what they want with it.
2. People were so outraged they immediately took to "social media to display their disgust". The even went so far as to create an 'anti-homeless spikes hashtag page on Twitter'. Wow! That's real dedication...I guess their work is done...time for a well deserved Starbucks coffee to celebrate. ::)

They'll be removed the minute someone falls, lands on the spikes and gets seriously injured.

Yes, and just as they have a right to put the spikes down on private property, people also have the right to protest against it.
Seems like people forget that rights go both ways. I am not saying you, just in general.
And I also agree that twittering is stupid if you want to change something.

I'm sure that they would let homeless people sleep on their property

This strongly reminds me of Kony 2012.
Hit the like button and be done with it.

Knowing England, the spikes will get their own Twitter account with regular updates like 'One guy tried to sleep and couldn't rest! HA! Spikes strike again!'

Lol, no doubt. This doesn't seem very well thought through. "Muh lud, my client's promising career as a concert pianist has been tragically ended before it began. Millions he's lost in potential earnings. The pain. The suffering!"

They've had these on buildings for pigeons for years. Why no outrage for the poor pigeons?

Invites lawsuit & controversy, is an eyesore and requires damaging a building to install (so much for heritage), does nothing to solve homelessness, and is thwarted by a bit of sheet that anyone could swipe from a building site or possibly a few good knocks with a hammer. Less than inspired imo.
Rich people are pricks.
It'd be so tempting to fire in a few dozen pins right outside the front door, just to be an ass about it. "I say! Some cheeky bugger's put spikes in the path!"
Ramset powder guns. Take about 30 seconds. If one were so inclined.
-
Wool blanket + cardboard and they won't even feel it.
-
The people who are protesting if they feel so strongly about it why dont they raise money to get a place for these homeless people to stay, but they wont they prefer to just talk shit.
-
Drop a dead body onto them. Or a live one if you really want some press.
