Title: What is the best way to get dumbbells into position for shoulder press?
Post by: AmonRa on June 15, 2014, 12:41:12 AM
What is the best way to get dumbbells into position for shoulder press? Seems like a gimmick exercise. I think barbell is better.

Agree?

The only way I know of is to put them on your thighs/knees, then bump one leg up at a time kind of launching them above your shoulders.

x2

It's important that it's two different guys per dumbbell (four total).

Don't do it, or don't do it with weights you cannot clean with one hand?

Do you do a standing clean to shoulder height and then sit on the bench/chair? Or just only do the standing OHP?

I don't use DBs at all but if I did, I would clean them and do it standing. Yes it is harder and you have to use your ab muscles to balance the weight but... It is easier on the spine and I am long over with boosting my ego doing half reps in seated DB shoulder press. For powerlifting, useless, the only reasons you ever do shoulders is joint health so using movement that fucks up your joints isn't smartest thing to do. For bodybuilding, even more useless.

Standing OHP, push press, side raises - more than enough to build solid shoulders. You will use far less weight standing but since it is so easy to fuck up your shoulders during these movements and no one really gives a fuck about your "seated military press" numbers then why bother.

I am starting to be where you are, brother. After 30 years of various seated variations of the OHP (BB behind the neck, in front of the neck, DBs, neutral grip trap bar) I have to reluctantly admit that they are just causing me pain now. There is a small-but-growing number of exercises on the scrap heap for me these days...

Do presses in the 10-12 rep range, full range of motion.......touch front delt with dumbell in the lowered position, then press just a tad before lockout, repeat.

No need to use mega-heavy dumbells on pressing IMO,not that I haven`t in the past myself, but most people will get more development from moderate weight, good form, full ROM,and short rest periods.......no spotter needed, and way less injuries, plus better gains.

This is how I do them, I can get 100s up fairly easily...

I don't take kindly to disrespect. not on the internet, not in person, not in a grocery store parking lot, not in like at walmart, not in a restaurant, not at the beach, not at the dry cleaners... anywhere.

ppl talk about the 'pussyfication' of America, yet they run their mouths thinking they won't get slapped and get their arm broken in front of their friends.

spent many yrs in a place where if you talk slick and say something out of line to somebody, you know that when you say it, you better be ready for what happens. most ppl here in the 'real world', aren't ready for what could happen.. and run their mouths like the world is a make believe cartoon. despite wearing nice slacks, polished shoes and a nice shirt, the guy you steal that parking spot from at the grocery store and proceed to flip off, may have just gotten out of prison and will have no problem identifying they bitch in you and proceed to teach you a lesson by taking you down to the ground and kicking out your teeth before you even know what happened.

the guy who's willing to go the furthest, wins. if you're not willing to go all the way, it's best you keep your mouth shut and move on, and make it to the next day.

If I have someone I trust I'll lift one myself with 2 hands and have one passed to me for heavier sets. I do enjoy heavy Db press but once they go up in weight hoisting myself is a minefield with my lower back.

I don't believe this bollocks of if you can't get it up yourself don't do it. I'm training my shoulders, nothing else

I put them on knees and kick them up, nearly everyone gets a spotter to hand a dumbbell but if you cant get them up yourself you shouldn't be pressing them imo, I can get up 50kg's x 10-12

The most comprising part I see is you start holding the dumbbells at 12 to 6 o'clock on your knees then afte the "kick up" when you twist it to 3 to 9 o'clock the forearm muscles can be put into an awkward position.

Never sustained an injury but sometimes the motion doesn't feel right.

I just bicep curl the 200ers on to my shoulders. DBs are always for reps for me so i do sets of 15. If only my gym had heavier than 200lbers  i could go heavy (for me)
