Nobody can match them, even the Americans

DEVGRU was based around them, so they'd be the closest competition.
Thing is, all Special Ops teams have their own specialty... theyre not really comparable.
-
Do they lift?
-
I only met and knew 2 Guys who passed selection. One lived here in Celle was an ex Royal Anglian and we trained together, the other was a Sgt in my Regt.
-
Do they lift?
The Guy i trained with did but later re-joined the Army and did SAS selection. was a very, very fit Bastard and strong. Not Big but strong.

Polish GROM forces are bad ass as are the Canadian Snipers, USN SEALs, Green Berets, etc.

all are good. we also had 264 Signal Squadron who did a course on par with the Paras and wore the SAS Beret but Royal signals Cap badge. Met a few of them. Very laid back guys. Kept themselves to themselves.

ALL spec ops groups were based on the SAS....not just devgru..

Israeli specials are supposed to be pretty damn bad ass too

Israeli specials are supposed to be pretty damn bad ass too
they really arent special forces anymore...more of a government attachment..kinda like the CIA SAD team, and DEA FAST team..
but israeli should have an exceptional spec ops group..they used enough of our money building it

Eh... to a point... but DEVGRU is the only one specifically modeled around the SAS. The rest kind of evolved out of their own specific mission set.

basically all our tier 1 groups are a specific model...DEVGRU, DELTA, whatever group the air force is calling their tier 1 anymore..
really DEVGRU isnt that much higher than a regular SEAL...they get much better jump training and a pretty much unlimited budget...which means all the LBT gear, and Arc'teryx gear they can fit on their bodies and in a kit lol

The SAS showed these Iranians a thing or two back in 1980 during the London embassy siege. I remember watching this unfold live on TV and thinking they had blown themselves up but they were just blasting thru the wall so they could shoot dead the Iranian terrorists while saving all captives.
This was the incident which made everyone in the UK aware of the SAS which had pretty much been a secret outwith the military.
-
Aren't the SBS as good as or better than SAS?
-
You've got men in the United States who have been out there religiously shooting firearms since they were 5 years old with their Dads, Uncles, Older Brothers etc.
Put enough of those types together and I think they're gonna be able to handle themselves with just about anybody.
-
Send them to Iraq to clean up shit.

Being good with a gun is like 1% of what operators do. I am as good with a gun, any gun, as anybody I know. I can Mozambique 3 guys in under 5 seconds. But I am not even close to being prepared for a real op. It's fitness, training and mental toughness.

And the willingness to go to any lengths to achieve success... even if it means death.

ESFitness would be perfect!

How is technology effecting these groups of people? Has it gotten to the point where these guys have to be smart as fuck now?
-
i knew two people. one guy left, got fat, became a private investigator. the other guy did his back in on a jump and left.

I know a lot of them have to be extgremely intelligent... some SEALs have to be able to qualified nuclear capable to some degree.
There tech gear is cool, and they have all state of the art stuff, but they still have to rely on a lot of old fashioned shit in case their flashy gear fails them. (Which happens more than people like to admit, from what I've been told)

Funniest thing about that is thousands of people complained to BBC that a live siege on terrorists, we're talking explosives, jumping through windows on ropes and saving hostages, was shown instead of snooker ;D

These threads are funny as hell. If you want to train an indigenous force to conduct unconventional warfare then our Green Berets are tough to beat as trainers and advisors. If you want somebody shot in the face either Delta or the SAS are the way to go...if want a bunch of Oakley wearing cowboys with high cardio and good hair..send the SEALs. You'll also get to read about it everywhere.

Not enough known about the SBS to say for sure how they compare but ill bet my life they are as good as / better than just about anything we know about. SAS are generally accepted as #1 without bias, one i personally rank VERY high is the Pathfinder Platoon.

The Intelligence Corps of the British Army is very sneaky Beaky. In N ireland were very active. they have elements who are very under cover and itīs all kept quite. this is what makes them very Dangerous. Remember Meeting one who was Intelligence Corps or SAS i donīt know, came up to me showed his ID and wanted to enter camp. Had a beard and looked like a tramp. We had next to us very high Ranking Staff Officers so it was known that there were Undercover operations going on. Guy just walked up and smiled and said, allright mate... i knew straight away but had to send him into the Guard room. The Duty Guard commander just came out winked at me and said heīs OK. Said it all.

The GSG9 are good by all accounts but not in my opinion like the SAS. The worlds best in Anti terrorism is the SAS...end of Chat.

watch all the parts very interesting.

Till 1980, the Rhodesian SAS were probably the best and till 1994 the South African Recce's.
Now, most likely the Israelis.

SAS was formed in the 2nd ww.. long range desert groups in Africa against Rommel. But I agree Israel has very good people.

I would look at training budget.
Nor ought we to believe that there is much difference between man and man, but to think that the superiority lies with him who is reared in the severest school. ― Thucydides
My argument is that a bigger budget can afford a more "severe school".
In that light, I would lean toward SEALS whose training budget is unmatched anywhere.
-
John McAleese one of the SAS men who went in the window at the Iranian Embassy siege. What a way to be remembered! :)

Didn't a lot of them go undercover into Catholic bars? I remember one of them blew his cover because he got drunk, started singing on stage and his accent slipped. He got executed later that night in a woods. You gotta be crazy to do that undercover stuff

Well if he did he was an idiot. what i heard and saw over there i canīt write on here. I remember we had the 2 can rule, meaning no more than 2 Beers. Went out the window and i remember going in a Bar with another guy and i mean you could hear a pin drop. Then they heard my scottish Accent and started talking again. We knew it was a Loyalist Bar and when i went to the Bar to get a couple of pints a known Player was across from me and looked over( was a known Terrorist). Never said anything to us. looking back at it now we were very stupid. this was in 1987 and it was still quite volatile.

I thought the Mossad was recognized as the best- hands down.

"To IRA sympathisers, he was a spy, pure and simple, who was caught in the act.
Nairac was not, in fact, a member of the SAS. He had trained with the elite Army outfit, but had not stayed long enough to be 'badged', as those in the Regiment call themselves."

With the Nationalists
As an ignorant Yank, I have no idea what "Nationalists" or "Loyalists" means. I could ask my wife whose family hails from Leitrim, but why bother. I understand "IRA" and "England".

An American martial arts master, who is a top percent combat shooter (in competitions, with moving targets, etc.) trains many SWAT teams in firearms, combat readiness, tactics and just about everything related to law enforcement, told me he believes the SAS are the most accurate shooters of any special force division. He said they're guys are much more proficient than our best military special forces (SEALS, Rangers, etc.). Surprised me, but I take his opinion higher than any others.
-
Yeah, but they have bad british teeth. That's why SEALS rule: nice American teeth.

1 individual could not train everything !.
Germans & Israelis have far the best gear.
The best shooters ,hmm Finlands snipers whacked so many Russians !.
US & Australia lost just too many man in Afghanistan , ???.
In Afghanistan , US operated in too large groups, others like Germans,British,Croats & Australians in much smaller numbers.

This is the former Team 6, correct? Shock, are you familiar with WWII's Marine Raider Battalion?
Also, big respect to SAS.

Yes, the raiders are kind of legendary to us. The forefathers of Recon.

Awesome. My gramp was 1st Battalion, but I never really knew much about them growing up. Just knew he fought in Okinawa, etc. Looked it up later, actually found his name on their website. Their history is pretty remarkable.

I heard this guy was the best!

He served three years in the Pacific theater before getting his jaw blown off in battle.
...but NEVER talked about his personal experience, even with my dad.
Well, yeah.

Well, yeah.
*chuckles*
Wrong, but funny. I shouldnt, but i couldnt help but laugh at that.

Well, yeah.
Damn, saw what you/I did.
It was restored or repaired. Just the scars.

the top groups are all very very close. they all cross train same techniques etc. how do you measure "best"?
