yesterday i was able to bang out 4 sets of 10 with 140 lb dumb bell rows....i have been at 120 forever and the first set of 130 was too easy to really mess with so i moved up to 140 and could barely finish each set with a little cheating on teh last half of the fourth
but shouldn't i be able to do at least 260lb bent over barbell rows?
and even 240 gives me problems! :(

Not the same exercise, you're probably bracing your back with the other arm while doing 1-arm rows, plus the motion and grip's a little different.
Try doing rows using both dumbbells at the same time.

Yeah, definitly not the same. If you do barbell rows consistently for a period of time I would say so. But if you do dumbell rows all the time and decide to do barbell rows for a change, don't expect to pound up the weight simply because you can with dumbells.

Something a new trainee to lifting learns, usually with-in six months, is that strength is not always transfered from DB's to BB's on a equal ratio. BP/inclines come to mind. That can apply to lat machine pulldowns to doing chins. The nautilus machines have a poor strength transfer when going back to regular BB/DB training, in some cases a few men have become weaker in their favorite free weight lifts, at first. Weither preforming one handed DB rows or both hands together will not make a difference. As with one of my training Bud's who does one arm side presses with a 200lb DB, he couldn't come near doing a 400lb overhead BB press if someone was holding a gun to his head. This all might highlite the importance of training with both DB's and BB's for a complete muscle building/strength building workout. Both are very important.
Why this transfer from DB's to BB's is lacking I do not know. I could guess, but that would only be a guess. I'm sure someone who comes to this site could offer some information on this. I'm sure there are hundreds of college or private research groups studies, mostly funded by government grants, who have an answer. Good Luck.
