See my short history of bodybuilding, on my website, Bodybuilding Reviews.  It was a late 19th century invention, through the discovery of resistance training.  The three people most responsible are Attila, Sandow & Macfadden.

Yep the mighty Weider and his fantasy body. Jou can say what you want but he made bodybuilding real sport and not a beauty contest like in the 30's.

That's a great painting  ;D

I'm looking at some Weider video right now, must be from the 80's or early 90's or something, they talk about the Weider principles all the time, they got most of the stars in it thought, a young Dorian for example.

Weider didn't "invent" a goddamned thing. He simply took an established sport and milked it for all it was worth.

Just got done reading Muscle Wars by Rick Wayne.. Even in the 60's Weider used to tell them all to say how The Weider system and Weider protein shakes made them what they were, Of course they were all swallowing D-Bol tabs like they were skittles, but that really didnt add to their physiques..

 ;)

That's the pulldown bar.  He forgot he was doing a set and struck a pose.  It ended up knocking him out.

Mike, I enjoyed your overview, but it contains several factual errors(Grimek did not win the Mr. America in 1946, Joe Weider never won any bodybuilding contests in the 1950s, and others).
