Exactly. The piece of equipment apparently never caught on.
I guess the only advantage it would have over dumbbells is that it is plate loaded. And you could change the weight easily.

Weren't these used for deadlifting years ago?

If I'm not mistaken there was resistance as you squeezed together, unlike dumbbells.
