Title: How come Senator John McCain hasn't come after bodybuilding?
Post by: Wiggs on February 10, 2006, 12:32:46 AM
This guy wants to crack down on steroid use in sports (although we still don't know if bodbuilding is technically a sport) he hasn't went after the big daddy of them all.  What's the deal?

I'd say it's basically due to bodybuilding having very few active competitors, and little money involved. Once the connection between bodybuilding and other sports becomes evident to politicians and the media, there is a very big possibility that bodybuilding will become the focus, and the scapegoat, on the public scene.

You hit the nail on the head. Bodybuilding is a small fish in a big pond.

with all the steroids sport talk, i'm pleasantly suprised that bbing never came up.  if it did, and all that congressional hearing shit happened, bbing would be done.

the only thing bbing could do is run the shows like how the mr. universe/world amatuer championships are done.  drug test the day of the show, which means that guys stop using 4-6 weeks before a show.  at least then they could say we test our athletes and they pass tests.

the NABBA Mr Universe is not drug tested.   The IFBB World Amateur Championships is suppose to be drug tested, but they only did a handful of random tests this year.  drug tests are expensive, you know.  Most of the people who were tested failed.

Politicians stir up bullshit non-issues like this for one reason and one reason only... to take the electorate's mind off real substantive issues that they haven't done anything about, can't do anything about, or don't want to do anything about.
They usually pick "issues" that will appeal to young (or not-so-young) mothers who haven't got two brain cells to rub together, telling them how <insert issue> will "harm their children."
Since most kids are into baseball, football, etc, but not bodybuilding, those are the sports they go after.
Hope this helps.

BECAUSE BODYBUILDING ISN'T A SPORT. IT DOESN'T REACH THE MASSES. AVERAGE SPORTS FANS, COULD CARE LESS ABOUT BODYBUILDING. IT DOESN'T TAKE ATHLETIC ABILITY TO LIFT WEIGHTS. ONLY A HANDFUL OF PRO BODYBUILDERS ARE TRUE ATHLETES.

Because sideshows and oddities have been historically well tolerated for the most part.  It's the major sports that are under all the political scrutiny.  They leave the freakshows alone.  Thank God.....

The building of the muscle could perhaps be deemed "athletic", but even that's a reach.  The actual bodybuilding show is just a pageant.

hahaha thats the first post I have read in a long time that made me laugh. "There is no dump conests!!"

I agree that bodybuilding is a sport. Maybe not when your taking a whole bunch of gear, but done naturallly without chemical assistance it takes more "athletisism."

BODYBUILDING A SPORT ? HA HA !!! WHAT A JOKE.  I TAKE NOTHING FORM THOSE GUYS. THEY HAVE TO BUST THEIR HIDES TO GET IN SHAPE TO STEP ON STAGE.  HOWEVER, THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT THEY'RE ATHLETES.

Acutally according to the IOC bodybuilding is recognized as a sport so I guess that would make them athletes.  Not saying I agree I'm just telling it like it is. ;)

McCain is one of the greatest senators that the US has ever known.  He has done more for this country then you will ever think about doing.

I hope the FBI is still watching getbig, and cracks down on every prick that just tried to defame a senator.
