Title: Remember "Muscular Development-Fitness-Health/All-Natural Muscular Development"?
Post by: MCWAY on September 16, 2014, 11:19:27 AM
I was going through my old MD magazines and found some of these in my stash.

Steve Blechman vowed never to feature any more steroid-using bodybuilders in his magazine again.

John Romano claimed ANMD was getting hate mail because most of the bodybuilders featured were black, "All-Black MD, African Development" was a line supposedly used against the publication.

This was done largely as a reaction to the death of Andreas Munzer.

Many of the covers though had fitness girls, no bodybuilders, natural or not-so-natural.

Anyone else have some of these oldies in their garage?

That's because those guys were among the top finishers at the '96 Team Universe. It did feature Robert Washington, who beat Skip LaCour for the heavyweight title.

Assuming you're referring to Kai Greene, I have the issue with him, when he was still in the WNBF.

Assuming you're referring to Kai Greene, I have the issue with him, when he was still in the WNBF.

Found it. It's the March 1997 issue, with former internet pin-up girl Cindy Margolis on the cover.

According to the article(p.73), Greene started training at 12. By 17, he weighed 260, could bench 500, and squatted 800.

And apparently his love for citrus started young, as he reportedly ate 30 a day for breakfast.

i still have a huge collection but fir some reason years ago as I was going through a de cluttering period burned all the md's for that era. Dammit if I didn't give all my mds away from the 80s. That's wen I loved that mag. Not slick n professional like muscle n fitness back then but a real thin Mage w shitty pix but I loved it. Anyway yeah. That's who I meant. I remember that mag. His keyloid show up real good there.  I remember him saying they were from being knifed or wutever. There was a shot of him from the back also doing pulldownd I believe.

I started reading MD back in '93. It was one of my favorites. I went through a 2-3 year span when I didn't touch a Weider mag.

But MD went downhill once Don Ross died. Then after Andreas Munzer croaked, MD went into ID crisis mode, morphing into MDFH and later ANMD.

It really got ridiculous when Blechman left Twinlab and bought MD from his father and brothers. Then all he, Romano, and everyone could discuss was steroids.....and whether their "fitness models" preferred to spit or swallow.

If Kai was doing that as teenage natural then he ought to be benching hummers and squatting trucks by now. :o

You started in '96, right around the ID crisis mode for MD.

MD (post-Twinlab) went a year straight with NO bodybuilders on the cover. And it looks to be about two years where, if bodybuilders are on the cover, they're in black-and-white; whereas the silicone sirens are in colors. Some have huge color covers of the women, with small B&W insets of the bodybuilders

Greene looked like a twig, during his WNBF days, compared to how he looks now.

Where did he get those lats? His back was almost nonexistent in the mid-90s.

Cue Phil Heath gimmick account to remind that a decade ago, Kai screwed a fruit, therefore if he looks better on Olympia day, they still have to give the title to Phil.

I assume you mean turning pro in the IFBB, as he was already a pro in the WNBF. At the time of that ANMD article, Greene won the WNBF Pro Mr. Universe.

He won the Team Universe in 1999, before it was a pro qualifier. But he didn't get grandfathered into the IFBB when the rule change was made in 2003, which allowed Greg Rando and Skip LaCour (who won the TU in 2001 and 2002 respectively) to turn pro. Rando did; LaCour didn't.

I assume those were maxes. Greene reps with 500 on the bench press now. Heck, he probably inclines 500.

Then how much weight do you suspect he added from his WNBF days to now?

And some people here complain about reaching their natural limit.

Yet they featured a then unknown Ernie Taylor (1996) with his then  (claimed) 22 inch arms.

That was during the MDFH mode (They were still featuring IFBB pros but were hammering the drug use and also pushing the TU guys). I have that one, too. I believe fitness champ Jacquie Wang is on the cover of that one.

OOPS! I got Taylor mixed up with J.D. Dawodu. Taylor is in the June 1996 issue with some pinup girl from the Michael Scott agency on the cover.

Kai's max for a bench now is probably near the mid-500's so there is no way he was hitting anywhere near 500 as a natty teen. :D
800lb squat? LOL. Doubt Kai has ever attempted that even at his biggest and most juiced - nothing resembling legitimate depth anyway.

It's common for BB's to exaggerate their strength.

You picked Shonna McCarver over Cindy Margolis as your extreme meat-beating cover of choice.

Most guys were ga-ga over Margolis back in the day, not that McCarver isn't cute, just an observation.
