Most overrated bodybuilder ever.
he probably would call himself a 'physique sculptor'as oppossed to bber...
-
You were born the year he came out of retirement.
-
Good for him. He has his health, his joints are good, no oil stuck in his body. He can move on without dialysis, organ transplant waiting lists, etc...

Most overrated bodybuilder ever.
One of the more cerebral bodybuilders ever......
He stayed true to his ideal.

I suspect the photos of Bob Paris are a little out of date. For one thing, he has gray hair now according to photos posted in 2013 on his Facebook page. He is 54 and he still looks good. There is much positive to be said for bodybuilders leaning out as they age.

Wrong, that's Ahnold

Time to show the kids just how perfect this guy was. Stood 6'0" or 6'2" and weighed 248 pounds and only got better throughout the 1980's.

Last but not least, here's a side by side comparison of him in 1984 (on the left), weighing 248 pounds at over 6'0" tall and then on the right, in his absolute best condition (combo of mass and class).

You're kinda new to bodybuilding aren't ya.

The important questions is what's Vince Basile's grudge with Bob Paris? He stole Basile's machine for symmetrical rectum stretching?

Kalman Szkalak is in much better condition (& out of bb)

that would be either frank zane or arnold imho

Can some dickweeds stop saying "just the finishing touch" every time they see a guy who is smaller than he used to be.
This comment would only be relevant if they still trained and ate the same way. Anyone of us who competed and then moved on in life knows that only one in a hundred of us does that, the rest slow down and other priorities take over.
Being really big should be a stage in life and at some point you need to back off a bit.

I agree. Some of us take longer to realize this than others. I've fought an internal battle with this for years. I'd decide lean out when I would take steps to lose weight and hopefully regain what my natural bodyweight would be. At some point, often about where I am now at 185 lbs. where I'd check myself out in the mirror and freak out, seeing myself as the skinny kid I once was and so desperately wanted to change, which is why I started working out in the first place. So, I would start lifting in earnest and eating more to regain the size I'd just lost. It was a unhealthy cycle in which I seemed hopelessly caught.
As I said, at the bottom of the cycle, I've usually gotten down to what I currently weigh. Right now, I am happy with how I feel and look at 185 lbs. I don't care that I don't look like a bodybuilder. Hopefully, I just look like a old guy who is reasonably fit. I feel great. I suspect my cholesterol has gone down some. I bought new clothes that aren't swimming on me and for once, gave away the old clothes. Along with this new way of thinking, I have no plans to workout as intensely as I have in the past. I'll still hit the gym on a regular basis, but I am now going to concentrate on just being fit and not building muscle. If I can retain most of what I've gained in muscle over the last 50 years, I'll be doing great and I will be happy with myself.
-
Does he go into detail about his steroid use? Specific steroids/dosage....
No. There's no need. He talks about his disdain for drug use and how it became more and more of a vice clamping down on him.
Very intelligent person. I feel he should write more.

A time when you'd actually like to be called a bodybuilder
-
yea paris and reeves coulda been father and son they look so much alike body and facially

a few years back, I found this book on sale in a book store, it was only $2.
A lot of interesting stuff related to that era of BB.

no doubt, those 2 guys where what bodybuilders where meant to look like, nice tight waist, good looks, nice balance combined with good size

Bodybuilding is now just that, building a body at all cost and ignore shape and structure.
Back then natural genetic shape counted for something.
-

people used to say he was the Modern Steve reeves.

That's a good point you make.
I find that nowadays everyone is maxed out and bodies pushed to their limits in terms of (pharmaceutical) growth...they all somewhat look the same/very similar.

Absolutely, Rory had mass and proportion. Rory and Matt Mendenhall should have been given their pro cards, Bodybuilding would have been much better for it.

I agree, mendenhall was awesome as well,he had such great lines and balance it was perfect almost. that's what bodybuilding was about imo, guys like mendenhall, rory, paris.then u got a guy like Belknap who looks like a block of clay put together on top of each other and gets pro card ::)

It's amazing they never did. We talk about them both more than the majority of pro-card recipients of that time.

Mendenhall was so damn dense as well. Belknap is horrible. It's funny, Rich Gaspari was considered by many as blocky during his time. Look what we have now.

Rory ruled. Was my idol as a kid. Bb I mean. He had the ideal physique.

This. It's just not a priority any more. I'd much rather be lean and look healthy than be 'big'. As I said before, if 'big' was a priority, I'd pick the needle up like 100% of the 'big' guys here and keep at it. Funny to think and remember how important it used to be. Having abs = still very important. Having shape = very important. Being rich and happy, THE most important.

That was a fucking physique! (girls loved him/guys wanted to be him)

Someone gave me copies of the 84 and 85 Olympia back in 87 and he was the only one that I saw and thought, If I could get anywhere near that physique I would be happy.

Paris was one of the very best.
Bob Kennedy told me that during his best years, NO ONE looked as big and as awesome as Paris did in the gym. He was strong, too, apparently. Set after set of squats with 500 pounds.
He was tall, good looking, had clean lines, a tight waist, proportion ... Guy really had it all.

This really speaks to how bodybuilding has changed over the years. A 6' tall bodybuilder weighing 229 lbs. probably wouldn't stand a chance of even placing at most of today's pro-bodybuilding competitions.
-
His book was awesome... There is a chapter where he talks about flying to a show can't remember if it was to compete or guest pose, but he was getting hammered and telling the passenger sitting next to him all about what it's like being a top tier bodybuilder and what his life was like, living the dream etc, was really cool

Legendary shot. Unsurpassed even 30 years later. Crazy.

Without the massive bloat, gigantic gut and excess organ growth, most of the modern guys wouldn't weigh much more, truthfully.

Of course without that drug use no one would have heard of him or want to buy the book he wrote.
The candor in his retirement of a truly great bodybuilder like Dorian Yates is refreshing when compared to someone like this.
You can end up doing lots of things you don't like. I don't like doing dishes or waking up early, but the end result is what people are after. And for Bob, after years of enduring the drug use and homophobic IFBB officials he realized that it really wasn't worth it to him anymore. I applaud him for saying "fuck it" and truly getting out of the game.
I can begin to imagine all the different sorts of struggles he had to endure. Look at his fucking perfect physique and then look at the fact that he really left bodybuilding for good. Put it all behind him entirely. He looked absolutely stunning. Very few physiques surpassed his, and he left it all behind. So many bodybuilders blow out a kidney and still can't stop injecting because they feel small. Look at Kris Dim for example - paralyzed, heart attacks, aortic valve explosion or some sort of catastrophic cardiac event... dude flexes his arms like there's no tomorrow despite having 12" upper thighs whenever a camera is around. Total mind fuck.
At least Bob's toil and torment was only mental. He's the type who looks at adversity like that and allows it to build character, then moves on. He's healthy, shifted to another art form to express himself and enjoy life and put bodybuilding behind him. When I came off all the juice I read his book another couple of times and it helped me to deal with being skinny fat. I wish he'd write some more. The book can be read in an evening or two and I think he knew a lot of stupid bodybuilders would be reading it.

One cannot control how tall they are. What they can control is how proportionate and symmetrical their muscular development is within the limits of their body type, be it endomorph, ectomorph, mesomorph or some combination therein. Obviously how tanned they wish to appear is up to them. Unfortunately, the darker one is the better their definition appears, which gives darker skinned folks the advantage under lights.

One year he lost to Belknap and competed as a light heavyweight. The year he lost to Paris was his best 83 Nationals. Still should have been a pro. He was supposed to compete at the 85 Nationals in Miami but never did really wanted to see him on stage in condition.

SAME WITH MENDENHALL...he got shafted and returned in 91 with a total different look big but smoother'but hard to get judged when ur out of bbing a while, plus newman/fransois,edgar fletcher, matarazzo, wheeler, were on the scene by then..

rory was one of my favorites back in the 80,s,i heard stories of rory rowing with 505 back then, they say he was brutally strong all around.him and jon arinita had some brutal sessions back then
Saw Rory train 60-70 times starting way back in 1983' yes 1983. Last time I watched him train was Golds Venice 1996. He was extremely strong. Smith Machine inclines with 405. Very smooth controlled movements. Close grip bench presses with 365 for smooth clean reps. Lat pull downs with the stack- again, always smooth clean reps.

Never a good idea to compare yourself to an actual bodybuilding legend. If other's wish to wrongly make that comparison- fine, but don't do it yourself.
Go-4-it, you have a nice physique. Bob Paris is on a completely different level. A High School kid who "lettered" in Track & Field vs a multiple gold medal winner in the Olympics.

To clear things up, I wasn't comparing myself to him..I wouldn't dare, the dude has one of the best physiques of all time, I honestly never even knew who Bob Paris was until I joined this site, and when I posted my first photo Squadfather commented that I looked like Bob Paris, I had to google him to see who he was...in some of his photos i can see a lot of similarities (face wise), and yes I am no where near his level (body wise)
