Title: Are excessive tattoos a sign of mental illness?
Post by: LurkerNoMore on October 02, 2014, 07:41:14 AM
Noticing the trend lately that the most tat'd up guys are usually the most duck fucked in the head as well.  DA, Warmachine, etc..

To be honest some guys are actually pretty "normal" and can articulate speech and thought process.  Lee Priest is one.  Rich is another at times.  Key word = at times.

Note - I am not referring to large tattoos that cover a lot of real estate on the person.  I am talking about the various small tats that these idiots scatter across their bodies and then in the future try to attempt to weave them together in a full sleeve design or some shit.

Of course they are, especially the people that get them on their head, face, neck and genitals.

look at the full picture. i have a lot of tattoos but i also hold a mundane job, drive a Honda, and just do normal shit day to day. FFS the most thrilling thing i've done in months is pick up some expensive tech shit just to play with. i get the tattoos because i like how they look and that's about all. you get an artist type who's got stuff on his hands and face, well he might be in an industry that doesn't care if you're heavily modified. creative minds tend to go spacey with all of that, but they're not ill. just not restrained. i have some good friends who have nearly full body tattoo suits and they work in businesses like accounting and shit, LOL. hell, all you can see of my 70-ish hours of tattoo work is a little bit on my arm when i wear a t-shirt

the tattoos aren't the sign a guy like DA had problems. you gotta add up everything. he was a dude who filled his body up with chemicals and oils, shit that actively damaged him, in order to look a certain way. tattoos don't hurt you. a guy can live to be 100 with a body covered in ink. you're not gonna see very many bodybuilders living that long, particularly not from the modern era.

it comes down to whether it seems like a personal thing or a cry for attention. a guy who harms himself in order to look good so he can pose nude for people? that's not a guy who thought particularly highly of himself. the tattoos were just icing on the proverbial cake.

It is, I fear, a sign of mental illness.

It often stems from having an absentee or otherwise inattentive mother, which makes the matter all that much more sad.

Obviously a sign of something wrong...But so is using steroids. It the LOOK AT ME syndrome most people have. Wither its growing rasta dreads and hulu hooping in a park while chanting, getting tatted all over, doing steroids, whatever. Our generation is narcissistic and we all believe we should be admired and payed attention too. People are OBSESSED with outward appearance and fitting in. NO one cares about Character or inner vaules. Its all about the outside baby

For some people it's for attention, and that's how it gets out of hand.

It's a sign of having high self esteem when, in reality, it's low self esteem. Look at me, LOOK AT ME, DAMMIT!!!

you are dumb as a fucking bag of hammers if you think obsession with outward appearance is new, or that trend-following somehow got invented in the last 10 years. every single goddamn generation was all about how you look. there's a reason JFK made waves by not wearing a damn hat: in the 1960s the country was so completely frantic about a man dressing a certain way that when one guy didn't do it they all freaked out. a few eras ago women in England were putting lead based paint on their faces to look pale and men were wearing tight pants with pointy-ass shoes to seem powerful. every... single... generation is appearance first, character second. end of transaction. its bred in our DNA, unless you think that in primitive times our simian ancestors were having profound conversations with one another. ::)

people like you get tripped up because you spend your time on youtube and facebook so all you see is the inane shit people post, while ignoring all the amazing stuff this generation has done.

it's ironic actually. you're so shallow that you just look at what you can find on twitter and tumblr rather than actually digging deeper, all in the pursuit of calling others shallow. hm. funny that.

I predict the next super lucrative profession (besides a gay divorce attorney) will be tattoo removal specialist/technician.

You need to distinguish between Americans who are tattooed (or any other body modification procedure), compared to tribal/native people who are tattooed.

A lot of americans who tattoo try to be badass and standout.

This is much different than tribal/native people getting "tattooed" for spiritual or religion reasons. Tattoos for this reason meant something deeply spiritual and profound. We may not agree with the body modification of people from different cultures, but at least it really means something.

And of course the Western world caught on and messed everything up. Now tattoos are common among your typical MMA or UFC fighter who try to be "badass."
