If today's chemicals were available to bbs of the 70s and 80s they would also look like the bbs of today.

:)

Bertil Fox lost so much bodyweight by 1987. I read he was down to 215 pounds for that show, because all of the judges kept criticizing him for being too big and massive in the past. So, he starved and himself and came in depleted and as a consequence was a shadow of his 1982/1983 former-self.

No they wouldn't. Bodybuilders back then had real work ethic, trained hard and trained right. Today's bodybuilders use copious amounts of drugs to compensate for their lack of hard work in the gym.

its a travesty...everyone has there time or favorite era/bber/look..but today there is no chance or hope for any up and comer unless they take 2 to 3x what was used a decade or two before just to get same results and even then its creating misshapen or distorted and not conditiioned bbers, the training aspect should be instilled the 1st day you decide to take up this quest for a better body or stronger one,,not drugs 1st train later....

Fox went down from 225 to 194 for the 82 notc and placed 3rd I think. He was back up to 225 for the 82 and 83 olympias.
in 87 he looked to be in the 180's , tiny. I had the video of 87 Olympia back in the day and I was shocked how small he looked.

Yep...that's not Brutal Bertil

fucking guy was inhuman

Roy Callendar was another beast.

And I think the drugs back then were BETTER.  cleaner....you can see it i n the overall appearance

Sure guys are bigger now, thanks to insulin and taking 4 grams of underground test as a jumping off point.

but that tight, sharp muscle quality is GONE.

My theory is if you strip away the 30 pounds of bullshit marbled, shitty muscle....it's the same body underneath

I remember having a conversation with Chris Dickerson at Better Bodies Gym in NYC a few wedks after the Gothenberg Olympia...which Dickerson was at. And he told me that he though that John Hnatyschack got royally screwed in that show. Said that Hnatyschack should have been in the top 6.

We tend to romanticize that era too much as though they didn't take shortcuts.

Not true.

They used every shortcut available to them.  Everyone trained like Arnold cause he was the champ.  Only Mentzer being a notable exception.

If they could've gotten their bodies to 285 shredded they would've but they couldn't.

They pushed their bodies are far as they could then.

But even so, the level of training was much more harder. They loved to trained and they trained hard. Today, guys talk about doing "half reps" to keep constant tension on the muscle.  ::) ::) Lazy workouts.

We all knew they took shortcuts. The difference was that they still trained hard, despite the shortcuts. Guys today rely too much on drugs and train like shit. Its just a whole different training atmosphere.

Yup, that tight, sharp quality is not evident anymore. That shrink wrapped look is gone.
