So underrated. He was considered as one of the word pros back in the 80's/90's, yet destroys most of the current pros today. He seemed to be a cross between Bob Paris, Rory Leidelmeyer, Gary Strydom and Mike Christmas. Dude weighed almost 270 pounds. A true mass freak with symmetry.

He competed against the whos-who of 80's & early 90's bbing...some say rachel mclish was to blame
narrowly lost to haney in 82 at nats at 22yrs of age, beat paris and tim belknap
83 gets the flu 3 weeks out of nats, loses weight, hardness, but competes anyway cause his parents flew in, takes 4th behind paris, rory & christian, beats gaspari
84 loses out to christian in controversy, when most thought he was the clear winner
december 84, bad car-crash, ejected through windscreen, but recovered
85 loses out to shredded berry demey at world games, after winning the npc qualifier
skipped 85 nats, where the field was considerably weaker than prev years, many think had he competed, it was his
86, misses his peak and loses to gary strydom at npc nats, after, contracts a virus and his immune system is weakened severely through 87, he gets homeopathy treatment, and stays in bbing circles, starts studying homeopathy, becomes qualified in treatments and sells products, helps his brother in rehab centers. he is also an electrical engineer, but chose not to pursue it
88, joe weider pushes him to comeback, he does 88 nats, pulls out of evening show after poor pre-judging showing
91 makes a comeback places 5th behind levrone, wheeler, de mayo, ronnie coleman
92 starts personal training and endorsing supps
93 judges few shows
94 guest-poses at npc texas champs looking greart, gets standing ovation, announces retirement
96 starts a massage therapy practice
Thats pretty much it.

Matt also had some alcohol issues. And not some small ones either, from what I understand.
Try looking up Jeff King. There's a bodybuilder for ya. Could've beaten Haney, in my honest opinion.

Yes he was something. Jeff King was Mass monster

^^ Great pics. :)
People tend to joke about his thick neck, but Jeff is a clear example of a bodybuilder who was completely balanced from head to toe. Easily one of my favorites of all time.

He still is one of my all time favorite. He disapeared fairly quick. From what i know he works as a health care worker.

Yeah, that's what I heard as well. A poster here ( back in the day ) knew Jeff personally, but was unable to get him on here
-
Mendenhall & King 2 great physiques.
Both would of done well as Pro's.
Had they got Pro status.
I believe King was AAU NABBA man.

That would have been great! Wes met him a couple times, he had nothing but great things to say about Jeff.
I wonder how all this guys feel of the direction Bodybuilding has taken?

When Jeff left bodybuilding he finished his education in physical therapy and now practices at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield MA and Greenfield MA.

He is shocked people still remember him! He trained hard/heavy, was pedantic about his diet and took basic compounds (no gh or insulin).
-
Damn brings back memories. Matt was prob my fav bber back in the day. Glad to see he is still looking good and has a career. I remember the April 83 issue he was on. I was on my lunch hour at my first job walked down to the corner store and saw it. I was dieting I think for my second show at the time, talk about motivation. Pretty sure Matt if from Cincinnati.

I was at a show in Pittsburgh that his brother won. He had similar legs but lacked the upper body his brother had.
-
Great build! Wider than 2.5 Heaths!

.
looks great. Once again the case of the mystery of the shortening aging tricep. The exact thing happened to my left but not my right.
-
I went to a Jeff King seminar/I'm kina thinking that makes me old :-\

+1 for the use of the word PEDANTIC.

That is indeed a happy ending for a serious bodybuilder and all too rare. Bay approved!

Could not agree more and it's key to know when it's time to move on. He also made sure he got a good education.

^^
No neck as he's definitely OFF the gear now, looks like he's a buck 30 max!!
Back in the day, I swear he was heavier than Haney- too bad he didn't jump to IFBB and try a couple Mr. O's...
He would have given more competitors digestive upsets... :)

Didn't she bang Ray Mentzer, and a whole bunch others????
Who didn't she "date"?

How old is Matt? Early 50's?
-
Still looks good !! 8)
Jesus Christ, he looks terrible now. Worse than many who never had 1/10 of his genetics. And he was awesome in his day. I recall Flex Wheeler discussing him at the Nationals when he made his comeback. Flex was telling Cormier or Rico that when he saw Mendenhall all he could think was: "GUNTHER!" (kind of in a way to refer to him as a huge Teutonic God.)
He's fallen quite far from "GUNTHER" status.

Yup, getting old is a pain in the ass. Some mornings after you wake up, you catch a glimpse of yourself in the bathroom mirror and you think, who the heck it that? What's worse than losing size is keeping it and sagging in places where their used to be fuller muscles. Former competitive bodybuilders who look the best as they age are those who wise up and slim down.

I could not agree more. You pay a price for bulking up to 300lbs and stretch your skin even further with site injections and synthol on top of it.
Dave has slimmed down a lot and his arms look pretty bad.

yes i agree, ill be 50 in afew months and i have pains in my body that i dont think are even invented yet, all those deadslifts and heavy squats will catch up to all of us one day when we get older,u cant escape it.once i hit 30 i started playing the leaner look game, there was a yr or 2 in there tho that i let myself go and got heavy, usually im on the leaner side tho,its not practical to try to stay big when u get older,to hard on organs and joints ect

im not sure if she banged ray,u could b right tho. i know matt was sticking it to her back then for sure.
-
What a world we live in when a dude like this doesn't have a pro card, yet Dan Hill does.
-
old school equipment was cool
-
I think Matt looks great for his age. Most of those guys back in that era don't look half as good. Yeah he's smaller gee wonder why. ::)

Ray Mentzer told me he used to date Rachel. He was such a serious dude. Apparently God got between them so they didn't last. Ray wasn't the believer.

Yeah was just about to mention that. I met her once seemed pretty arrogant. Maybe she's changed who knows.

jeez. U must be like ten years old. He does not look terrible. He looks fantastic. His build now is better than 99% of twenty year olds. Wut makes him look old is that he is losing his hair. Cover up his hairloss w your thumb in those pix n he looks twenty years younger. He needs HT. OR shave it off.

I'm close to his age and he does not look good for a 50 yr old who has been training for 3/4 of his life. Comparing him to some average 50 year old who never trained is silly. There are many many people who do not have 1/10 of his genetics who look better.
Why would you let someone take a picture of you doing a triceps exercise like that? How does that even make it to the Internet?
Wait til the Platz $700 seminar, then you'll see some good shots.
-

Yup. He was the same age as Lee Haney I believe. Both were in their early 20's back in the early 80's.
