Have you ever ridden in an armored car? Or considered upgraded your car to armored status? BMW is the only maker I know who sells an armored version of their car directly (the 7 series protection) http://www.bmw.com/com/en/general/corporate_direct_sales/security_vehicles/overview.html but it is possible to convert almost any SUV into an armored version. Modifications include.
• All original glass is removed and replaced with NIJ tested multi-layered ballistic glass
• All opaque material surrounding passenger area is replaced with hardened ballistic steel
• Protection against high-power rifles such as 7.62x39, 5.56x45, 7.62x51 and M80 ball
• Roof (at an angle) & floor (anti-mine protection including DM51 grenade/fragmentation)
• Additional areas of armoring are fuel tank, battery and computer module
• Rear partition ballistic glass with swing door and locking mechanism
• P.A./multi-siren system and LED strobe lights, per client's specifications
• Reinforced door hinges to support additional weight of the armor
• Complete set of four (4) high-grade Run-Flat inserts installed
• Patented designed armoring for firewall and wheel wells
• Additional protection for the floor and the radiator
• Vision enhancement systems (camera/monitor)
• All door and window openings are overlapped
• Driver and passenger side power windows
• Customization per client's specifications
• Custom tailpipe protection
I'm wondering what all this might cost... and what it would do to already bad fuel economy. Armored SUVs are very heavy. :-\

Just make sure your boyfriend wears a condom. No armor car needed.

BMW 7 Series High Security: $350,000
BMW is a high-end luxury brand for vehicles but they can pack a punch as well with their armored 7 Series High Security. BMW believes this car is German engineering at its finest because its added weight does not not affect the handling and acceleration of the car.
The High Security can repel high velocity projectile weapons and chemical attacks. It even has its own gas tank that can seal itself again when hit by a bullet. Its engine is no slouch as well because its V12 6-liter, 535-horsepower gasoline engine can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in just six seconds.

If I had that kind of means I would probably just move... to a place where having an Armored car is unnecessary. On the other hand, even if I were living in a typical American city, if my net worth were above say $70 million, I would probably armor my car.
-
If I had the money I'd by that BMW High Security in a second.

On mobile but I posted the marauder here before if someone wants to post pic and specs of it. South african car and fuck knows it would come in useful there. Don't see the point otherwise unless you are schmoeing for isis.

What about random gun violence or being caught in the crossfire? It may be rare depending on where you live, but if you had a net worth of $100 million, you could probably find cause to write off the expense of upgrading your vehicle(s) to be armored. I'd do it.

You're nobody till somebody kills you.
.....or at least tries.

Pretty much every big automaker offers armored cars. Most parts are handbuilt, so you have to pay a lot.

Here are some used and new armored cars:
-Go to mobile.de
-change the language
-click on Detailed Search
-In the Variant input field you type in armoured and you get 116 results. If you type in armored, you get less but different results. Mercedes calls their armored cars Guard.
The most expensive car is a armored Mercedes G65 AMG by Trasco for over a million and the cheapest car is a 1994 armored Peugeot 405 for 3990€ lol

I bet it's just about worthless against a good sized IED buried in the road. The car would just be to heavy to protect against that threat level. Stopping rifle bullets and hand held grenades is great though. Can it stop the ubiquitous russian made RPG found all over the middle east?

Bet if you travelled around in a zorb that shit would bounce right off.

Like someone else mentioned they have run flat type tires. On a side note I have seen people riding 50MPH plus on a completely flat tire.

You are forgeting total change of suspension, brake system and rims to fit larger disk brakes due to weight issues.

Third world luxury car. Far out.
-
Why aren't more cars fitted with these as standard? What are the drawback of these?
Cost :-\
I recently replaced all 4 tires on my 2009 vetted
And the cost was over $2,100.00
:(
Damn goodyear is making a killing on this F1 tires >:(

Are you serious? $$$
Some cars now do come with runflats as standard, but it is a) much more expensive than a regular tire. They fold the price into the cost of the car so you don't notice, but it is much more expensive. b) the ride is not as comfortable as a traditional tire in my opinion. My neighbor here has an BMW M5 and it has runflats. It is an impressive vehicle to be sure, but it is not the same as the alternative.
