Title: One of the Oddest Things I Have Ever Seen Bodybuilding in Southern California
Post by: Never1AShow on October 17, 2014, 08:57:57 PM
Around 1990 I used to train at Block's Gym (I think it was in Placentia and it later changed to Gold's Placentia).  Shawn Ray and Serge Nubret both trained there at the time.  There was a scruffy not in shape guy who trained there/hung around, I think they called him Caveman (cause he looked like Captain Caveman).

One day he had his car parked outside the gym with its hood up.  As I was coming out of the gym, I walked around the car and saw that, under the open hood on the exposed engine, he had taped cut outs of numerous pornographic pictures of women to various engine components.  Almost every square inch of the engine was covered in some type of pornographic picture. Why?

He was standing there as if this was normal behavior.  I never did get an explanation, any more than I got an explanation for why Serge Nubret seemed to be training there for hours and hours on end doing some kind of crazy low weight high volume routine.

Blocks Gym used to be in Santa Ana off the 22 fwy at Harbor blvd. I trained there with Rory and a guy named Scott Livingstone. Have to say, I don't remember Serge training there.

Did you ever see the car?

Any idea why he did that, covering the inside of the engine area with porno shots?  I'm really hoping you know because it is a mystery that has been haunting me for years.   ;)

Yeah, this was about 1990, Serge trained with a guy named Kenny something, who I think was a Cal level competitor.  He definitely trained there, ask Vodak.

P.s. I am such an idiot falling for Manny Fold above.

The Serge Nubret string tank top.  A quantum leap in muscle science.  It deserves its place in the Bodybuilding Hall of Fame.

I trained there in 79 when he had the Grand Ave location- is that the one you meant? in the strip mall?
