With Halloween around the corner....what is the best Horror Movie to watch?
The Exorcist?
The Shining?
Nightmare on Elm Street?
The Ring?
Texas Chainsaw Massacre?
Which movie is the best of this genre?

Not sure, but I find this movie to be so potentially horrifying I refuse to click on it:

The Shining, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Cannibal Holocaust and The Omen are probably my favourite horror films.

Who is drowning that anteater and why?
-
"Nose Alone - Londonistan Unchained" - epic D movie bore-fest.
"Nightbear On Elmstreet/Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is more of a cult movie than a horror flick.
Exorcist/Omen/Shining is still spooky.
"The Thing", Carpenter version, is a nice mix of classic horror with some good shock moments and eerie suspense.
-
The Shining is an all time classic, still works today.
"Martyrs", french horror movie from a few years ago was tough, beats the shit outta you.
Evil Dead remake was pretty cool from the most recent ones.
-
Never got the hype behind the exorcist or the shining. Horror movies to me I don't like because mostly blood and gore, etc. Scary movies I do like as more thought/suspense to them.
Both of those were neither to me. Overhyped, IMO.
-
Sleepaway Camp is pretty memorable due to its ending.

Shining was a masterpiece. You had one location (hotel) and 3 people for the most part, what Kubrick created out of this was breathtaking. As spectator you felt trapped in that damn hotel yourself every minute, about to go insane.
-
High Tension is a good one of recent years.

Of that list the Exorcist.
My favourite is American Werewolf in London. It has nazi monsters doing a home invasion, Jenny Agutter's tits and an ace soundtrack.

Dug out the original nightmare on elm street DVD just recently and couldn't believe how lame it was, rembered it as being far,far better.
-
Halloween wasn't bad either. the shatner mask alone is scary.

A lotta movies age very bad, few are timeless. Those are called classics. Shining is one of them, also Psycho from Hitchcock (60s), still works today.
Watched some scenes from "Blade 1" recently, couldn't believe it. The special effects, pure comedy! Damn it looks so bad (used to be the coolest flick ever in the late 90s)
-

Many folks do not care or don't have the mental capacity to appreciate all the detail/thought and hard work that went into the Shining. If they like it then it's because it triggered their subconscious.
Only after watching Rob Ager's work on it I could start to fathom why Kubrick was simply "one of a kind".
-
"The Exorcist" is only scary to Catholics and others who were raised to think demons might exist. The movie is a metaphor for the mental state of a reluctant parent.
"The Shining" is the GOAT. Creepy, well-made, gives everyone the heebie-jeebies. King didn't like it because the story was written during his darkest drinking days, and it hits a little close to home in regards to the violence towards the boy and wife. I'm sure he was channelling a lot of his own dark fantasy into that book, whether he was aware of it or not. No wonder he finds it unsettling and distasteful.
If you want real-life horror, watch a documentary called "Jesus Camp". That will freeze your veins. Those poor kids.
Tension-type horror, check out "The Descent".
Unrelenting, take it to the next level, watch at your own risk, don't say I didn't warn you horror, see "A Serbian Film".
For lighter fare, "Exorcist III" is not bad at all. Some classic scenes in that film. I also like "The Omen" (original version).

Yeah conjuring was pretty good.
-
I know it's not considered a "Horror" movie, but the original Jaws movie scared the shit out of me the first time I saw it as a kid.
-
There is an underlying theme in all of Kubrick's movies, that is the forces governing and guiding this world. It's almost like he has a sense of duty revealing who they are and the religion they practice almost to a point of obsession. "The Shining One" is another name for Lucifer in ancient Hebrew. For those versed in the occult there are some scary scenes in The Shining that take the movie to another level. Have a look at the shirt little Danny Torrance is wearing in the Overlook Hotel. "Apollo/Apollyon" is the Greek name for Abaddon, the spiritual being named as the destroyer in Christian theology. Remember, the priest of the household is responsible for permitting evil or good in the household. In the case of The Shining, the individual is Jack Torrance. The Overlook was built by the same people pulling the strings in the world today, the elite jet setters. We are given a glimpse into where they derive their power from in The Shining.

Holloween is my favorite of the more popular ones, I also like -

.
. You need to find the uncut version of this, it's super underrated.
I'll also watch Day of The Dead (my favorite of the Dead films) , and Creepshow 1 anytime they're on.
-
The only movie that gave me a sleepless night in the past 10 years and made me feel really, really uneasy for a couple of days was "Martyrs". French movie and not so well known, but this one really punches the shit outta you (and I was a grown man when I watched this). Don't even wanna think about that flick again :-\
Unrelenting, take it to the next level, watch at your own risk, don't say I didn't warn you horror, see "A Serbian Film".
lol U must be kidding. Serbian Film is a comedy. The producers were trying so hard and desperately to "push the envelope" it's just laughable and can't be taken serious for one second.

Danny was wearing an Apollo 11 shirt, because as everyone knows, Kubrick was involved in the faking of the moon landing.

Chernobyl diaries is worth watching.
-
a cross between Conan and Star wars ;D
-
being this is getbig, hercules vs the giant grasshopper is worth a viewing., just won out iver that gordon scott movie hercules vs the floating garbage, which was a tv pilot in the mid 60's.

The Exorcist, The Fog and The Shining scared the crap out of me as a kid. The exorcist really bothered me because I don't live too far from where it was filmed and my father worked in georgetown not too far from the steps blah blah blah...so its left a mark on me.
Salems Lot (a miniseries) scared the crap out of me too.
-
"Fright night"
-
Shining is the best, followed by The Exorcist and Hellraiser
Also some good ones are 30 Days of night, Warlock, Nosferatu and Dont look now

Correct, the same people pulling the strings. Kubrick was open about it. Eyes Wide Shut confirms.

Phantasm

Cube (1998)

Phantasm
Yep, a brutal classic from 1979. 8)
The terror fly in the box, tall man, the flying spheres... and not to forget all of Lee's family going all out to kill naive Americans.

Agreed. Terrible movie. Almost laughable the way the producers clearly went all out to make it as "shocking" as possible. ::)
More a joke then a horror.

GREAT POST !!
Can't get into horror films myself due to some childhood trauma. But I do remember one series of films that still scare me to this day. And that's the " Hellraiser " series. :( Pinhead freaks me the fug out. :/

this movie was really eerie, especially when the theme music played was creepy

It was the reality that a creature like that really exists... AND it could be right next to you or underneath you while you're swimming only 50-100 yards from the beach.
IMO, the greatest movie poster image in history...

Did you borrow this from Room 237 or should we just add it to the list?

anyone seen this?
Yeah, the whole movie was pretty lame except for one scene, and that didn't shock me, it rather pissed me off big time! That was the scene where they killed the giant turtle, as it was no special effect, they really killed the animals back then on camera in that f*ed up cannibal movies from the 70s (animal snuff scenes) as they had no money for the special effects. ::)
-
It's a Halloween tradition for my GF and I to watch Dark Night of the Scarecrow.

I haven't seen it myself but I did see the scene where they come upon the impaled girl and wholly shit that looks too real.

This is one of the creepiest movies I've seen recently.

The Blair Witch Project was quite creepy.
The Ring is worth watching as well.

Yeah, that's you and me, but think about the folks who get spooked by crap like "Paranormal Activity" or those "Insidious" movies. There are certain, ahem, themes in "A Serbian Film" that would significantly disturb them.

Ah! I saw the one! Messed me up for about a month. ;D
Just something about alien abduction movies that freak me out beyond belief.

Also, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. Not a true horror. More into the horror/comedy genre, but an awesome film nonetheless.

not all abductions are scary 8)
not sure if you read books but if you do check out 'The Contact has Begun' and 'The Challlenge of Contact' by Phillip Krapf. Good stuff.

Will do! Thanks for the recommendations. I've read Communion and Confirmation by Whitley Strieber. Both give really off setting tones on alien abduction.

The ones I remember when I was a kid - not strictly horror - were:
Alien
Invasion of the Bodysnatchers (70s version)

Alien is definitely a sci-fi horror movie. The chest-burster was one of the most shocking scenes in movie history.
Invasion of the Bodysnatchers was a pretty creepy movie back in 1978.

Here, here. I won't watch it again, yet I'd still have seen it had someone described t to me.

Without a doubt Martyrs was the most disturbing movie I have ever seen in my entire life. Was a good movie, but I swore I would never watch it again.
The first half was fairly enjoyable, a hard, but normal horror film, but the second half became literally unbearable. Every more minute it became worse, you felt the suffering of the girl literally on your own body, and were almost relieved when the bitch finally died. Passion of the Christ was kids stuff compared to that.
I was about to turn off, to puke and idK what else, somehow I made it to the end (watching it alone didn't make it easier I guess). And I was well in my 20s watching that movie. Didn't sleep the night either. But I loved the "ending twist", a lotta room for speculation and interpretation ;D
-
The horror/noir movie that scared me the most was and is masterpiece Deep Red by Dario Argento, by far no comparison, Phenomena was also pretty disturbing... Most hopeless feeling always Dawn Of The Dead 1978 (Romero's best imo) with Goblin soundtrack... Recently i would say Paranormal Activity was pretty uneasy and scary...

1. Exorcist
2. Carrie
3. The Shining
4. Nightmare on Elm Street
5. Alien
The Exorcist far and away is my #1. Legitimately scared the shit out of me when I saw it. It is the only horror movie I saw people walk out of.

FRANKENHOOKER had the best VHS cover. You press the button on it and it would say "Want a date?" hahaha
-
Good that it got mentioned,
"Dawn Of The Dead"/1978 - the penultimate Zombie film.
"Day Of The Dead"/1985, could have been even better but was cut short because of rating issues which halved its budget(3.5 Million $ instead of 7...
highly recommended to download and read the script because it peeks into Romero's truly great initial version.

1978 Dawn Of The Dead is the best zombie movie ever in my opinion, it has everything... The 2004 remake was decent but not even close, plus i fucking hate running zombies...

Totally understandable. It brought out the horny in all us.

I forst saw Frankenhooker on HBO as a kid, and it was immediately followed by a movie called "Him & Me," where a guy hates that his dick does allthe thinking for him, and the dick, sick of being badmouthed, leaves. So the guy spends most of the movie bonerless and then eventually they make friends again and his boner comes back. Not an X-rated movie and no actual shots of boners. Just a lot of pants-height POV, kind of like when they do puppy-cam, only better. HILARIOUS
-

C'mooooonnnn, I was 17. Everything brings out the horny when you're 17, especially watching scary movies with your boyfriend.
I think the second movie I ever banged through was Leprechaun 4: Leprechaun in the Hood.
Come to think of it, I've made a lot of poor movie-bang decisions.

Ha! Horror really seems to rev your engine.

In general I'm not a horror fan - because I'm a pussy and get scared and stay up at night just staring at the ceiling lol
But horror movies that I have enjoyed:
1. 28 days later
2. Dawn of the dead (the remake - never saw the original)
3. The Shining (to be fair I had read the book before)
4. The Mist (Not super scary but fucked up ending in the movie version - I had also read the book before)
5. I am Legend - Not really a horror movie but It scared the shit out of me nonetheless!
6. Alien - YES!!!
7. Bram Stokers Dracula - Just because I love how it brings in the history of Vlad the Impaler
8. Signs - not super scary or anything but really erked me out!
9. Fire in the Sky - not a horror movie by any account... BUT THERE IS THAT ONE SCENE!!!
A couple of comments on what you guys posted (Full disclosure: I haven't seen any of those below, just read about them):
A Serbian Film - Everyone and Anyone will confirm there is no plot or story or point - its just someone trying to get major shock out of the audience.
Cannibal Holocaust - From what I recall the filmmakers were taken to court for that true turtle killing and because some people really believed that the impaled girl was really killed (along with other fake corpses in the movie) - also I think I read two of the cast members fucked in real life prior to filming to prepare for the movie!
Martyr - Holy shit, I just read the plot on Wikipedia and WTF!!!! Seriously WTF!!!!!
One of the most disturbing movies I've ever read about and I can in no way get myself to watch is: Salo or the 120 days of sodom http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sal%C3%B2,_or_the_120_Days_of_Sodom

NOSFERATU (1921) Iconic German original !.

1. Exorcist
2. Carrie
3. The Shining
4. Nightmare on Elm Street
5. Alien
The Exorcist far and away is my #1. Legitimately scared the shit out of me when I saw it. It is the only horror movie I saw people walk out of.
nightmare on elm street, wow u just brought back some great memories for me. it happenend in 88,i met some broad from woodbridge,nj,she lived near the mall actually. me and her used to watch freddy on my tv alot,we had a few tapes of the nightmare on elm street series.we would go to brooklyn and cop some kick ass skunk weed then hit up chinese take out resteraunt and order about 75 bucks worth of food,we would get stoned about hour before food was ready and we would eat n then fuck for 30 minutes or so,then eat again and smoke some more herb than start fucking again. best days of my life, miss it bad
-
Salo is one of those films that gets by on its reputation, like a lot of 70's horror, it's not a great film, and not particularly shocking or disturbing now. Here's the film and selected clips -

this wasnt bad

this might be more sci fi but its got some horror in it :D

Most need to understand, it was 1973 and this movie was the first of it's kind. People were literally fainting and throwing up in the theaters.
Here is a great documentary film from 1973 describing/showing the impact of The Exorcist.

i saw it in movies in 73 n saw jaws 2 yrs later in same movies,2 awesome blockbuster movies in 2 yr period. exorcist was one of a kind and it was/is a masterpeice no doubt.

Was a little too young for the Exorcist in '73, but I saw Jaws in '75 and everything else that came after it.
IMO, the 70's was the best decade for all types of movies... The Godfather, Poseidon Adventure, The Exorcist, Young Frankenstein, Jaws, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Next, Rocky, Star Wars, Alien, etc. All fantastic movies and most of them had great soundtracks too.

i agree about the movies no doubt, n maybe im being a little bias but the 70,s had some of the best music also. i was 10 in 75 N REMEMBER the big disco scene appear, wow it was crazy.i actually got in to watch the exorcist at 8 cause it was suppose to be 10yrs old to get in,my uncle slipped the guy a 5 dollar bill n i got in :D

Salò, or the 120 Days Of Sodom, a masterpiece from Pier Paolo Pasolini (a talented weirdo himself), i have it original on VHS, disturbing in many ways...

Read he was murdered shortly after its release.

Oh, lovely. Especially enjoyed the exquisite shit feast.
-
120 days of Sodom was based on a book by Marquis de Sade.
Has anyone read it? Sounds quite interesting/disturbing:

Yes, being a known homosexual, or at least bis, Pasolini was supposedly killed by a young minor that he tried to have sex with... Hard to say if it really happened that way, many things don't add up, still an unsolved case...
-

I know right??? Wtf!!

I think its called centipede

Thanks bro, almost forgot Jaws. How many people were afraid to go in the water after that?
-
Salo - Holy shit, I just read the plot on Wikipedia and WTF!!!! Seriously WTF!!!!!
The movie is boring as shit, laughable at best... ::)
-

The Human Centipede. The first one is pretty tame but I've heard the second is quite nasty. Never seen it though.
-

Yeah, the 2nd one is disgusting (doesn't make it a good movie though)
-

I was a pro swimmer, still open water in the sea was always giving me uneasy feelings, still does of course... Like something lurking under that dark water, you watch down and you see a mouth full of sharp teeth ready to feast with your body... I would probably die of fear, lol...
-
IMO, one of the best trailers in horror movie history. And the tagline at the end is pure genius.
-
1978 Dawn Of The Dead is the best zombie movie ever in my opinion, it has everything... The 2004 remake was decent but not even close, plus i fucking hate running zombies...
Definitely, a classic and I hate Zombie movies.
-
Another movie that my daughters convinced me to rent a few years ago, is Drag me to Hell. Very well done much better than I expected.
-
IMO, one of the best trailers in horror movie history. And the tagline at the end is pure genius.
Yeah, eventhough the 2nd one by James Cameron was even better. Aliens was one of the few franchise where the sequel was better than the original. The 2nd one was decades ahead of it's time.
-
Is Christine considered horror? Either way, that one scared me too as a kid.
-
Oh, lovely. Especially enjoyed the exquisite shit feast.
That movie is like the atritocrats joke. Just trying to be as absurd as possible
-

I agree Aliens was ahead of it's time but it was a completely different movie than the first one. Alien was a horror movie, Aliens was a war/action movie.
The creature lurking in the dark, claustrophobic depths of the Nostromo and picking off the crew one by one was pure terror.
IMO, Aliens featured too many creatures, which diminished the terror and turned a horror movie into an action movie. Still a great fucking movie, don't get me wrong.

"Alien" shits all over "Aliens" - a year ago I watched the second part and I was shocked at how cliche/laughable the Marines were.

X2. Alien had none of that Hollywood overacting. Totally different movies.

It succeeds.

Christine is a grade A flick... Cool car. Plymouth Fury

Not horror, but dark. Two I just streamed on Netflix and enjoyed quite a bit.
Sightseers - British black comedy, I guess. Much more black than comedy, though. Natural Born Killers-type couple on a murderous vacation. Both deranged oddballs. 7/10
Snowtown Murders - Extremely dark and disturbing biopic of Australia's most notorious serial killer. Some super tense scenes involving a few severely damaged mutherfuckers. Very well done. 8/10

At the Devils door

Thanks bro, almost forgot Jaws. How many people were afraid to go in the water after that?
I remember that.....people wouldn't even swim in inland fresh water lakes.
People literally screamed out loud in the theater in the scene when the severed head rolled out of the boat.

I like to hear other people's opinions on movies. This time of year I always look for 2-3 new scary movies to watch around Halloween.
But I always make sure to watch my favorite scary stuff at least once throughout the year.
Except The Exorcist, saw it once as a child and never, ever wanted to see it again. Still haven't watched it a second time in all these years.

you sound like my pops. he watched The Exorcist when he was 18 years old and slept with a night light on for months lol. To this day he will not watch it again.

When it's on TV I skip past it with my remote as fast as possible.
I've never watched even a few seconds of that movie since it came out.....it freaked me out that bad.

its been on every night now on tv, my wife saw about 3 minutes of it and it was the part where her head spun around, she was like turn the channel now :D

Only the possession itself. They framed it within a court case, though, which I thought added a unique angle. Great film.

This one was a weird one but it had a pretty scary monster. It was an alien hunting humans in LA. Possibly the idea for Predator? Also another strange on was Xtro. Made no sense but had frightening images for it's time.
-
Is Christine considered horror? Either way, that one scared me too as a kid.
The book was brilliant.... The movie really didn't do anything for me (sorry don't mean to be that guy lol) although the downward spiral into madness of the main character was a great acting performance I thought!
-
I'd love to hear your thoughts on the film. Halloween and horror is always a new movie to watch this time.

Uh, yeah. That's nice.

Absolutely. As with most movies not holding up to the book, especially Stephen King books. I thought Carrie, The Shining ,and Misery were the only movies that held up to the books.
-

I saw it as a kid so it had a different affect on me then. Since I like to subject myself to controlled fear for some odd reason, I might have to read the book.
-
i like the old one with chris sarandon, great movie.peter vincent the great vampire killer
that's the one i meant, guess i have to clarify that now with all the shitty remakes

Yes that was a great one. Been watching horror films since I was 7
Everything and anything from foreign, independent, etc

"Alien" shits all over "Aliens" - a year ago I watched the second part and I was shocked at how cliche/laughable the Marines were.
Alien is one of my top five horror films. I saw it a day or so after it opened in Times Square at the old Criterion cinema. It was late May - warm - and the cinema's AC was out, so it was humid and a mist formed above all our heads. This created quite the ambience for viewing the film.
Alien was based on the 1958 film, "It! The Terror from Beyond Space." Major plot points were reused in Alien.

Thinking about this some more, maybe not "horror" movies, but scary nonetheless:
Misery
Mulholland Drive
Silence of the Lambs
Rosemary's Baby
-
Absolutely. As with most movies not holding up to the book, especially Stephen King books. I thought Carrie, The Shining ,and Misery were the only movies that held up to the books.
Shawshank (albeit a short story) and Green Mile didn't turn out too bad, did they?
Stand by Me?

Can probably put Se7en on that list, too, with Silence. But, yeah, not horror. And Sixth Sense, which I'm still unsure how to categorize. Also, Lost Highway, if you're including MD.

Made this same thread last Halloween, so I wasn't gonna post 'em again. But horror's my thing, I gotta.
The classics already mentioned first: Night of the Living Dead, Exorcist, Shining, Halloween, The Omen, and The Changeling in particular. All fantastic. But The Innocents, too. Creepy as hell b&w, '61 gem based on Turn of the Screw. Eerily suspenseful, must see ghost story. Don't Look Now, a genre-bending mindfuck, but so psychologically disturbing I'm including it here. Polanski's Repulsion, too, same category as DLN, same terrifying creepiness. Finally, Woman in Black, the original. Best horror ever made for TV.
Now Alien is amazing, but it's too sci-fi for me to include in the genre. Could be wrong.
More recent: Jacob's Ladder, Event Horizon, The Others, Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity (probably the two that affected me the most, fuck the bandwagon critics), The Descent, Rec, 28 Days Later, The Devil's Backbone, and SESSION FUCKING 9 for the love of God! By far the most underrated masterpiece of modern horror.
Honorable mention: The Wicker Man (original, of course), The Ring (remake), The Strangers, Sinister, and The Conjuring. Maybe Stir of Echoes, too.
Probably forgetting a few, but for the most part, these all have something my horror snobbishness requires: They're smart, and they put a premium on atmosphere, suspense, and psychological fuckery. And they don't try to mix funny with scary, I hate that shit. Not that it can't work (Shaun of the Dead, for instance), but it's a whole other animal.

No, I haven't. Doesn't have a great rating, but the synopsis seems interesting. Aside from the troll comments, I kinda like what the legit-sounding horror guys are saying. Definitely gonna check it out, thanks.

Session 9 was a pretty damn good movie! I remember first watching it years ago. I read it was filmed at an actual haunted mental asylum.
Jacob's Ladder is another amazing horror. Got it recorded on my DVR.

I'm a big fan of 70 's and 80's horror. Rare for me to like anything modern. With exception of many foreign films.

As i said, Paranormal Activity is disturbing, ok maybe boring for the most part, but still... The first Blair Witch was decent also... Did someone watched underground horror Basket Case?

Good taste! I've seen all those
Just watched vhs viral and was a let down :-\
A creepy low budget slow burn that's pretty good is "an american ghost story" reviews aren't too good but worth the creep factor. Also "bell witch haunting" not the best but imo good entertainment
-
don't hear much about it, but was very disturbing

are you afraid of the dark on nickelodeon had some creepy episodes

Of that list the Exorcist.
My favourite is American Werewolf in London. It has nazi monsters doing a home invasion, Jenny Agutter's tits and an ace soundtrack.
Wonder if it's on netflix.

Very good. A Tale of Two Sisters, too.

don't hear much about it, but was very disturbing
I've heard about this, found it on YouTube. Thanks for reminding me.

Hated audition, slow and boring imo
Not really horror but thriller pyschological I think are being remade by Hollywood , two of the best foreign films I've ever seen
"Bedeviled"
"I saw the devil"
-
Not horror, but has anyone seen a French film called Cache'? Psychological thriller, I guess, but dark and intense and very well made.
-
are you afraid of the dark on nickelodeon had some creepy episodes
E
As far as shows go there is:
Tales From The Darkside
Tales From The Crypt
Twilight Zone (1959 - 1964) (1985 - 1989)
Monsters
These are all pretty great.
-
The Trilogy of Terror films were pretty good, even the sequel. The little Zuni doll use to creep me out as a kid, they even gave him a full photo on the old giant VHS boxes back in the day -
Both are in english -

I always found this one kinda neat too, it's not a great film, but it embodies mid 80's campy horror quite nicely -

if you're fan of slasher films, then THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN (2014) is very much worth a watch.
-

A shrewd and perceptive choice.
-
Once I wrote "I SAW THE DEVIL" in black pen on my hand for a reminder, as i'd seen it recommended as a good movie on the UK board. On my way to a meeting, I noticed it and quickly washed in off in the toilets lol

u r right bro that movie sucked ass bigtime
-
So many episodes from the 60's that were pure greatness.
Like the episode set in the future where everyone's was the same perfect mold. Except one girl who saw virtue in having faults. Awesome episode!!
-

I felt likes I was forgetting something. :D Awesome show too.

It did suck......generation retard pulp.

blair witch is not overrated, it's great if you actually have an imagination
just saw "i spit on your grave" for the first time last night, that's terrifying if you're a girl

Just tried to watch this (Poughkeepsie Tapes) , I like horror, just not this kind, very disturbing....

Just saw it, too. Decent, though a little overly derivative with the overdone 'found footage' approach. And some real bad acting, too. Still, held my interest throughout.

yea the FBI and officers and shit were fucking D class actors straight out to film school if that

I agree. Those are the types I like generally. Usually once the creature or whatever is seen becomes much more of a letdown and laughable/cheesy in some cases.
And wasn't filled with gratuitous gore as a shock tactic to keep people's attention.

I loved it, too, but it all comes down to taste, so I'd never try to debate or convince a critic. A big part was that the shaky-cam 'found footage' thing was totally new to me in '99, which added a sense of documentary-type realism. Totally clicked for me, especially in this genre (one of my faves), which needed a fresh approach.
The other thing was that, for me, it got closer to recreating the worst kind of nightmare than anything I'd seen before. Literal nightmare, I mean, which can often be more psychologically terrifying than anything you experience in real life. Something evil is after you, but you never really see it.
I sorta get why some hate it, especially if they're only seeing it now for the first time. The style is totally played out, and there isn't a whole lot of "horror" happening on screen; it's all suggested through the horrified reactions of the "crew." Plus, when the haters list the movies that did scare them, I usually hate those. So, again, we're just back to taste.
TL;DR;GFM

I was leaning toward the classroom profiling teacher maybe being the killer, their big reveal. The lost sister, the mental breakdown, the extensive methodology knowledge, etc. But they didn't go anywhere with anyone, ended kinda flat.
-
I just read that a remake of "IT" is being released in 2015
-
I've seen this film 10 times at least. Hunting !
But the second film is a turnip >:(

Excellent film. One of the creepiest, best jump scenes in all horror.
And sequels are usually just half-assed money grabs, capitalizing on the original's success. I only do sequels if the original (or equivalent) talent is involved.

Yeah, no resolution so I guess there will be a Poughkeepsie Tape 2. I think I'll pass on that one.
-
great movie imo--HOSTEL
-
Hostel, Evil Dead (original), Last House on the Left (Original), Invasion of the Body Snatchers ( I think it's the second rendition but could be the first.)

Filmed down the street from where I'm presently typing, Sierra Madre, CA. Love this little town, best place I've ever lived.
-
Event Horizon was pretty creepy when I saw it again about 2 years ago. Aged pretty well.
The Shinning obviously.
Paranormal activity was solid.

I think it's the 1978 version I liked but it's been awhile. I don't remember the original. I went to many a drive in. Remember how many speakers were missing or broken because people forgot they were on their car and drove away? The original Night of The Living Dead still holds up and it's the movie that started this crazy zombie fad.

Alien and aliens scared the hell out of me.
Event horizons imagery disturbed me on such a level that illnever watch it again.
Some 90s horropr flick with jlo and vincent d'onofrio (sp) had some creepy moments.
All movies I saw as a child/young adult.

Very much so, the guy shows it in the vid I posted. Different businesses now, obviously, but same layout and such. Think they call this triangular island Kersting Ct. or Town Square, not sure. Craziest part is the bottom pic (from the movie) was filmed from my buddy's old apartment (or his next door neighbor's).
-
Some might find it a bit boring but I remember liking "The Silent House." Would probably have to watch it again to see how much but kept me entertained. Once again more of an imagination type movie but I thought pretty well done.

bingo.
I remember the silent hill movie having some wtf moments, but i never played the game.

I think they envisioned hell better than any movie yet. Jacob's Ladder (though maybe not quite hell - a hellish nightmare, perhaps) did a damn good job, too.

yeah. Thats what was so disturing about that movie... they actually made the visage of hell terrifying, instead of just people suffering in fire, some of the scenes were just.... unsettling.
Like the dude impaled on the barb wire wrapped stick, with his guts coming out of his mouth stuck wrapped around the stick stuck in the wire.. but still alive and suffering.
Unsettling

That's a good one cause of the suspense built up. I watched both spanish original and the remake

That movie was good. It was filmed (supposedly) in one shot, In real time.

I remember the silent hill movie having some wtf moments, but i never played the game.
The games are so very much creepier than the movie. I played Silent Hill 2: Restless Dreams and Silent Hill 3. Both freaked me out big time. So many parts that just made me want to hide in the game to avoid all the scary. Haha
Horror is different with a game than a movie. As with the movie you're just sitting back and going along the ride. But with a game you actually have to press forward yourself.
-
Come on... Nobody saw this movie and remembers that one scene?

Didn't see it, but does "that one scene" in any way involve extra terrestrials and a farmer's anus?
All these "abductee" reports of the dreaded alien probe is why I ask. Don't get it. What possible cosmic mystery could they believe is hidden in the human ass?

Absolutely, no comparison, Silent Hill first games were truly scary, creepy and disturbing... Silent Hill 2 is probably the best of the series, with the first one close second, imo...

go to hell with horror movies...cant watch them! Scare the fuck out of me!
-
I remember playing the original resident evil with my cousin in the middle of the night with all of the lights turned off in the house. That scared the fuck out of me... And when the dogs jumped through the windows, I'm certain I dirtied my underwear!!!
-
This is short, but delivers dat dere creep.
-
As long as the movie is fake enough with well known actors and CGI effects, I can't really take it serious or get creeped out by them. For me, most disturbing horror films cross a line or build so much suspense by what you don't see your imagination makes it worse (or better ;-) than u thought:
Disturbing:
1) A Serbian Film
2) Human Centipede (1, 2 & soon 3 :-/
3) Last House on Dead End St.
4) Cannibal Holocaust
5) Cannibal Ferox
6) Irreversible
7) Dawn of the Dead
8) Necromantik (1 & 2)
9) Aftermath
10) Salo: 120 of Sodom
Fear of the unknown:
1) The Blair Witch Project (saw advanced screening b4 it was trendy)
2) Paranormal Activity
3) Last Broadcast (Jersey Devil)
4) Rosemary's Baby
5) Snuff
-

I regretfully never got to play the first one. But the second one was truly a masterpiece. I must have played through it close to 20 times trying to get all the different endings. My brother was unable to finish it. Once he got to the hospital it was too scary for him to play anymore.
-

I loved that game. My first real horror game. That one part at the beginning of the game where you're introduced to the zombies by a cut scene. Where it shows the zombie eating someone and then slowly turns around to face you. That part would immediately make my brother high tail it right out of the room. ;D

Enjoyed these, especially DB. Gonna look into your recommendation as well; Netflix doesn't have it yet.
