I've been taking 1.5 mgs of melatonin since 2007. I used to take it once a month, then once every two months, then once every two week,s and now, once a week. I had to take it 6-7 nights, then I slept well without it Tuesday, but I had to take it again last night.
Is my body going to stop producing melatonin on its own?

This will be a good one for Nec &/or Monty, but I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be taken on an ongoing basis ???

You're worried about negative feedback suppressing hormone production/secretion.
Don't worry about your body decreasing melatonin production - it will do that regardless. The pineal gland in the brain is responsible for Melatonin secretion. This gland begins calcifying during puberty, and that calcification process continues throughout life.
The more the gland calcifies, the less Melatonin it secretes. That's why babies sleep...well...like a baby, and old people don't sleep for shit!
For what it's worth, I endorse Melatonin use 100%. But, you need to give it a fair chance. Some folks will notice immediate improvement, but many will need to take it consistently for up to a week to notice results.
It doesn't work for everyone, so don't bitch to me if it doesn't help you. ;)

I was able to sleep without it Tuesday.
I slept well every night without it two weeks ago. Should I be fine?

There are many factors that influence sleep quality. Melatonin levels is just one of them. People can have different responses to some of those other factors, too.
We've had some pretty good discussions on here about sleep. As a registered member, you now have access to the board's search function. If you're interested, type in some phrases like:
"sleep architecture,"
"circadian rhythmicity,"
"delta wave sleep,"
"improving sleep."
Those should help steer you in the right direction.

I guess my body's still producing melatonin, huh?

I'm a completely new user but i've been doing melatonin 5mg every night about a half hour before bed for about 4 months straight and the last few nights i haven't taken it at all and i've still slept completely fine.
I think melatonin is used for more regulation, not as much as actually putting you to sleep. just my .2 cents.

Some travelers who suffer jet lag successfully use it to reset circadian rhythmicity.
Just realize that there are other factors that effect sleep architecture outside of melatonin levels. The quality of your sleep may be caused by something other than melatonin.

Sure. So can bullets... depends how they're used.

Been using it lately and the sleep is waaay better. Went without it after a week's use then had some real shitty sleep, took 2 days to recover. 5-10mg works so good, the sublingual tabs.
Would like to know if anyone has info about using it non stop or not, problems?

800mcgs is the dosage most of the data was based off, they are studying the stuff for epilepsy, cluster headaches and some other stuff. Only real negative I can see is the worsening of asthma.
