An overweight Tennessee woman is compiling a photo series that shows the looks of disgust she receives on a regular basis.
Haley Morris-Cafiero, of Memphis, says she has struggled with undiagnosed eating disorders and hypothyroidism, a condition that can lead to a host of health problems, including obesity.
In the bio on her Kickstarter page, she wrote that though she has always struggled with her weight, she has “learned to love and accept my body.” But it appears not everyone else has accepted her yet.
So she is raising money to publish three versions of her book series "The Watchers," to share what it's like to feel judged for her appearance daily.
Back in 2010, Morris-Cafiero set up a camera in the heart of Times Square to take a self-portrait. After developing the film, she saw that a man posing for a picture behind her had been sneering at her.
“I never thought that I would capture a glance that can last a microsecond,” she wrote.
Since that moment, she has been actively trying to capture the disapproving looks of strangers as she goes about her daily business, in the "Wait Watchers" series.
Later, she flips through the images to see if anyone has been casting judgmental glances her way.
“I present the images to the world to start a conversation,” she said. “While I do not know what the passerby is thinking, I attempt to reverse the gaze back onto the stranger.”
Shortly after, in February 2013, her photo series was picked up by the Lenscratch fine art blog – and quickly went viral.
Morris-Cafiero’s inbox was inundated with emails, many of which insisted that her life – or even the entire world – would be better off if she lost weight and got a makeover.
These often harshly worded emails inspired the next phase of her photo series: to capture similarly critical looks while she exercised and got a makeover.
Needless to say, she succeeded yet again.

Another "Feel sorry for me! People are mean!" story. And to blame it on hypothyroidism is a joke, that's treatable with cheap generic meds and even if it's untreated you can still not get morbidly obese through other means, it doesn't doom you to be automatically horribly fat.
As for the "undiagnosed" eating disorders.........what the fuck does that even mean? Did she make a personal diagnosis and just not gone to the Dr/Pysch?
More excuses. Your health is in your hands. Your body composition is, in most cases, a direct reflection of you.

I'm not the kind to rag on people and I certainly would not try to belittle this person if I saw her on the street, but FFS what does she expect. She is grossly overweight and should shut up, do some research, bust her ass and change her life. Instead she's gonna spend her efforts putting together a montage of people making fun of her. ???

Correct. And most people don't make fun of a really fat person, if they're working their ass off in the gym. Yes, they're fat, but by golly, they're TRYING to do something about it. I'll give props to a fat person in the gym over a skinny stoned person at the bar any day.
I dislike the "seek approval from others with the same faults as me". Imagine a bunch of pedophiles patting each other on the back telling each other how hard it is in the world, with everyone picking on them. Being hugely fat is not a good thing, ever.

Honestly, what does she expect to prove by doing this. You can't tell what those people are looking at with one image. In one picture she had a map open in the middle of a crowded walk way, and the chick staring at her was fat.

The fact that she is overweight is most likely not the issue. The fact that she is frappy looking, unkempt, looks like she has not showered in days, messy/oily looking hair, and is wearing weird, unmatching clothes, is most likely why she is getting stared at.
If she was decently dressed, like these chunky/chubby women, she would probably not be getting looked at

I am the kind of person to rag on people. She is a fat ugly shit and deserves to be ridiculed and realise that the constant ridicule is a sign that her lifestyle is unacceptable. You can't change being gay or tall or small but you can change being a fat disgusting piece of shit who exposes their disgusting whale flesh in public. Hopefully the Japanese cull her in the winter.
