I've never been, but I see their commercials advertising $10 monthly membership and from what I hear they buy pizzas once a week. How do they make it? I can't imagine they have personal training. I assume it's all on vending machine junk food sales?

I think their business model is quite genius. Get a bunch of fatsos to pay 10 or 20 a month for a gym that most will never use.

Yep, most people don't care about spending $10 a month. Plus they can say they belong to a gym.

Bingo. 10,000 fatasses@$10/month is a lot of pizza.

This is accurate.
Give them a little dongle to carry around on their keychain.

Snack bar , bottled water, personal training
I'd guess like most franchises they make their actual money from rent?

It says no contract, which means that said fatty can cancel at any time. I guess that they're banking on the fact most fat people are lazy, and have probably exhausted themselves by just signing up, and won't take the initiative to stop the membership. Still, $10 a month isn't shit.

The one by me has 6000 members. I bet the majority don't use it. For $20 that rate entitles you to use the gym , unlimited tanning and bring a guest everyday for free as long as he or she comes with you. Not a bad deal. The $10 a month is just to lift.

There is a new 17k sq ft one near me with all the latest hammer, life fitness and cybex preload equipment. I always pick up a 99 dollar membership because even if I use it a couple times a month its worth it. It is weird using new machines because most gyms never seem to upgrade equipment any more.
-
I'm sure like most commercial box gyms they run in the red.

High volume of memberships along with low operating costs.

What do you mean low operating costs? Do the math just for least alone.

Most Planet Fitness clubs I know just pay people Walmart style wages.....the equipment is expensive but when you have about 5000 memberships at 10-20 bucks, a gym pays itself off in less than a year.

I think Planet Fitness is secretly owned & run by Domino's Pizza and/or Dunkin Donuts. They can run a loss because so many of their members smell pizza & donuts daily, and associate their use with a healthy, prideful lifestyle. They go home, buy a dozen fatty donuts or 2 large pizzas, and thus perpetuate a situation where they need to get in the gym.
It's brilliant. They're giving the American fitness psyche the worse spanking we've seen since Mitt Romney faced off against a Kenyan douchebag polling at 40%.

And no or little benefits at least from what I hear.
-
Because the people that sign up never go. Little cost to fix the machines, little cost to clean up and maintain the place, and since their is little maintenance, they probably do not have to hire a lot of staff members.

5000? Are you kidding?

Many members pay $20 a month for the "black card" (unlimited tanning & bring a guest each day)
-
unlimited tanning it awesome, i tan 3 times a day
-
I really doubt most pay 10
Probly get talked into paying more for extra pizza rights or something like that
