What about Larry Bird?
-
Yawn. Thought this was going to be a story about them dudes helping some unfortunate kid. Not a sel serving 'look at me' bullshit

What about Larry Bird?
There have been some great two guards. But I just know in my time from the 80s ‘til now Michael is the best player I’ve seen. He’s the best I’ve played against. I think he’s the best our league has seen. Not because of the championships but how good he was.

"When I played, Larry Bird was the only one I feared." Magic Johnson

2:15 "He's the greatest that's ever played."
Are you one of those people who will try to make a serious argument that Michael Jordan is not far and away the best basketball player of all-time?
If so I will have to withdraw from this discussion to avoid lending validity to such a position.

There's no such thing as one single best/greatest basketball player ever. MJ is there but so is Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Wilt.
For his era that man was a freak. 7'1, 270 pounds. Ran and jumped like a deer.
Probably the most dominant ever.
-

Wayne Gretzky is the most dominant team sport player of all time.
Period, end of story.

Bill Russell laughs.

No doubt Gretzky had an incredible career but his points/goals record will be broken before Ruth's combination of 714 homers AND 90 wins as a pitcher, THE most unbreakable record in sports.
-
Bill Russell laughs.
Can't disagree. Bill was the better team player and his style of play was more condusive to wins.
Always an interesting debate that Bill versus Wilt subject.
From what I have read Wilt was pretty much a "me" player the vast majority of his career.
-

No.
Only way anyone is getting close to Gretzky's points record is with a major rule change.
-
No.

And Ruth's record?
Your great great grandchildren won't see that broken.
As incredible as Gretzkys record is, future players will come a HELLUVA lot closer to that than 700 homers and 90 wins.

Depending on your opinions of "Cricket" as a "Sport" this title has to go to Don Bradman:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Bradman
His batting average was something like three standard deviations above the mean for all other Hall of Fame batsmen :o

I don't see a record category for combined home runs and pitching wins? Nice accomplishment, but not a "record".
If you have to categorize accomplishments down to make them a "record", then they aren't, they're achievments.
Unless you happen to know who holds the record for "most triples at Wrigley field during day games played after a night game against righthanders on a Thursday"?

Well, if only one guy qualifies for the category, it's hardly a record.

I like stuff like that. Adding context to numbers rather than looking at just their absolute values, I believe, it's one of the best ways to compare players of different eras in baseball.
-

Walter, I've been watching you for some time now. You don't post much but generally when you do its of the highest quality.
I just think on this subject its best if we just go our separate ways.
And it must be said that I truly look forward to engaging with you in other conversations in the future.

Well good Sir, I'm not trying to be argumentative, I just don't know a great deal about old time baseball. I know the story of Babe Ruth, but I think that is my point. He is unique that he switched from being a pitcher to a power hitter, but is he maybe the only guy that ever really did this?
With the DH now, it makes his accomplishment untouchable, but not necessarily a "record"?
Either way, Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Hey, Guys.
Not sure I'm following?
What did Lou Gehrig do that makes him the greatest team sport player ever?

All these records that were made in an era where Hebrews couldn't play are null and void. We all know what happens when we play a sport and like it. We end up dominating it. That's not being racist, that's being truthfull. See boxing, MMA,track, basketball, baseball and football for reference.

Cant really argue that. Especially in the case of Ruth.

Which "Hebrew" challenged Wayne Gretzky for hockey supremacy?
Or was that one of the sports the welfare collectors didn't like?

No. Lemiux had one 199pts season. Nobody other that Gretzky has had more than 200points a season.
Gretzky averaged over 200pts over five seasons. He has 1000 more career points than the next one.
That does not include playoffs. He has several of those records as well.
Ok. I do not know anything about baseball. Very little about basketball. Didn't live in a barrel so Bird, Johnson and '90s Bulls of course.
You just can't compare different sports. Team sports even less than individual.
-

No need to put Hebrew in quotes. It's who we are, no need to be subtly butt hurt over it.
No one has. Clearly from conversations with any of us in America your average Hebrew doesn't know about or care about Hockey. It's never been a sport we've taken interest in as a people so no one has challenged the great Wayne Gretzky. Gretzky is the greatest end of story. I have no problem with that. Just as I have no problem with Roger Federer in my opinion being the greatest Tennis player of all time He's by far my favorite and Tennis is one of my 3 favorite sports.

One can make a case that Josh Gibson is the best hitter of all-time. He played his whole career against nothing but Hebrews and allegedly hit over 800 home runs :o

The irony is that Mario Lemieux may have been the third/fourth best player of all-time and his incredible career gets overshadowed because he played in and followed the Gretzky era.

Well Wiggs, I am in America, and in my opinion the "average Hebrew" as you call them has an IQ of about 60 and quite frankly doesn't know or care about anything but their next government handout.
Wiggs, I'm not subtly butthurt, just as you're not Hebrew.

No.
#1 Wayne Gretzky
#2 Robert Gordon Orr
Gordie was great, but the real Gordie never lived up to the legendary tall tales about him that get told by the oldtimers.

Abdul-Jabbar dominated at every level. High school, college, pro. His basketball resume is unrivaled in the history of basketball. His high school team won 71 consecutive games. In college UCLA was 88-2 with him winning 3 Straight NCAA championships and he was the NCAA tournament MVP all three years. In the NBA he won 6 MVP awards, and 6 Championships. He shot 56% from the field for his career and is still the NBA's all time leading scorer. His Skyhook has been called the most unstoppable shot in NBA history.
Jordan is the best perimeter ever player but in my opinion he is not the best overall player. A dominant big man is just more valuable that a great perimeter player. They impact the game in a much larger way on both ends of the court.

You answered your own question. Jabbar was a "big man". He was an all-time great, but he had a height advantage along with guys like Wilt and Russell.
Jordan was 6'6. Considered average height for an NBA player.
It was a different ballgame 30+ years ago when you were at or near 7'0. You were literally a man amongst boys (height wise)

Where do you fit in with all of the above? ???

Who holds all of the major NHL Playoff scoring records?
That like saying Cy Young only won one World Series, so he wasn't much of a pitcher.

Usually means they crumbled when it counted most, final games etc
-
Basketball is the only major American sport where I really place a premium on winning team championships when ranking individual players because there's such little parity in the NBA. At the start of the year you can pretty write it in ink which three or four teams have any realistic chance of reaching and winning the Finals.
It's also a game where one elite player can have a tremendous effect on a team's success because there's relatively few players on the court at one time and a really good player will play practically the entire game. It's rare that the best team in the regular season doesn't at least reach the Finals, and the team with the best individual player is usually the team that wins in a seven-game series. Not always, e.g. when the Mavs beat LeBron's Heat, but usually.
For example if LeBron, Jordan, Shaq, maybe Kobe too, in their respective primes go to any team in the league, that team is immediately a Finals contender (well maybe not Philly this year but any other team :D) and their old team probably struggles to even make the playoffs.
Contrast this with the NHL, where even the best forwards only play like a third of the game and you can ship Wayne Gretzky at the height of his ability to the Kings and they never win a Cup. Or the NFL or MLB, where the team that wins the Super Bowl / World Series very often is not the best team in the regular season, does not have the league MVP, and one player no matter how good can't carry an otherwise average team to a championship.
-

Jabbar didn't have a height advantage. Centers and guards don't defend each other. He was going against other 7 footers at his position. Occasionally guys that were even taller than he was like Manute Bol and Mark Eaton. Jabbar wasn't playing in the 50's against a bunch of 6'5" white boys. He played against some legit bad asses. Wilt, Moses Malone, Nate Thurmond, Hakeem Olajuwon, Patrick Ewing, Robert Parish, etc.
